Creating a Strong Foundation for Neurodiverse Epistemology
Autistic people have had unprecedented success building effective
epistemic communities online. A detailed analysis of the conditions and
practices which produced and sustain these communities would be
illuminating for both the epistemology of social media and the emerging
area of neurodiverse epistemology. However, epistemology has only
recently begun to theorise about marginalised groups, and many of its
foundational principles are ill-suited to this work. In this talk I'll
outline a planned project to develop a novel approach to neurodiverse
epistemology, which challenges some of the fundamental assumptions of
the early, exploratory literature, and lays the groundwork for a
participatory methodology which can do real justice to neurodiverse
communities.
Speaker Bio:
Natalie Alana Ashton works on the political and social aspects of
epistemology, and is interested in how oppression and power effect
political deliberation in the online sphere. In the past she has focused
on theoretical issues (exploring how to integrate feminist standpoint
theory and hinge epistemology, whether these views should be understood
as relativist, and what that means). Her current work is on the
practical applications of such views: what they tell us about social
media legislation, platform design, and online communities.

Alma Wittlin (1899, Lemberg/UA – 1991, Palo Alto/CA), promovierte Kunsthistorikerin (1925, Univ. Wien) war erfolgreiche Schriftstellerin, freischaffende avant-garde Museologin und Erziehungswissenschafterin. Sie floh 1937 vor der NS-Verfolgung und fand im englischsprachigen Ausland mit ihrem bahnbrechenden museologischbiopsychologisch-pädagogischen Wirken langfristig Anerkennung.
In Museum. Learning. Democracy. The Work and Life of Alma S. Wittlin (1899-1991) (Bd. 19, Reihe „Emigration – Exil – Kontinuität“, Herausg. Friedrich Stadler; LIT Verlag) zeichnet die Museologin, Kuratorin und Kunstvermittlerin Hadwig Kraeutler Wittlins Lebensweg sorgfältig nach. Welche persönlichen und historischen Kontexte wurden in dieser „ExilBiografie“ wirksam? Gibt es Zusammenhänge zwischen Alma Wittlins „österreichischeuropäischen“ Erfahrungen und ihrem späteren, interdisziplinären Wirken?
Mit zwei Leseproben aus Wittlins Buch Isabella. Begründerin der Weltmacht Spanien (1936) und im Gespräch mit Robert Streibel werden Wittlins schriftstellerische Arbeit und ihr Pioniereinsatz beim Internationalen PEN vorgestellt.

Abstract
A priori knowledge in the Kantian sense is characterized as being
independent from experience, insofar as it is necessary for the possibility
of experience in general. This notably includes the fundamental principles
of geometry and physics. With scientific changes such as non-Euclidean
geometry and relativistic physics, there arose the question whether the
Kantian a priori ought to be revised in the light of the best current
theories or replaced by pragmatic considerations or conventions. This talk
will offer a review of the progressive relativization of the Kantian a
priori from the Marburg School of neo-Kantianism to Hans Reichenbachs early
work. It will then use Paps taxonomy to differentiate among these early
relativizing strategies and to contrast them with attempts to relativize the
Kantian a priori in contemporary philosophy of science.
Short Bio
Francesca Biagioli is Associate Professor of History of Philosophy at the
University of Turin. Previously, she has been a postdoc at the University of
Vienna and at the Zukuftskolleg-University of Konstanz, and a visiting
fellow in the Pittsburgh Center for Philosophy of Science. Her research
focuses on different traditions within the neo-Kantian movement including
Marburg neo-Kantianism, critical realism, the Neo-Friesian School, and on
the epistemological views of philosopher-scientists such as Hermann von
Helmholtz, Henri Poincaré, Hermann Weyl, Federigo Enriques. She has
published the monograph Space, Number, and Geometry from Helmholtz to
Cassirer and articles in journals including HOPOS, Studies in History and
Philosophy of Science, British Journal for the History of Philosophy,
Philosophia Mathematica.

Abstract:
Strategic science skeptics criticize scientific claims solely to promote
non-epistemic (for instance, political and economic) goals. Strategic
science skeptics present arguments to support their criticisms of
scientific claims. In this paper, I will analyze and debunk a neglected
argument exploited by strategic science skeptics: the argument from
scientific revolutions (aka the "Galileo gambit"). According to this
skeptical argument, strategic science skeptics liken themselves to key
figures in scientific revolutions throughout the history of science - in
particular, to Galileo Galilei - in order to enhance the credibility of
their own claims. In this talk, I will argue that the argument from
scientific revolutions is not sound, because at least one of its
premises (stating that skeptics are, like Galileo Galilei, revolutionary
scientists) is false.

ihrer Geschichte vergessen: Dr. Josef Sabath, Dr. Ernst Schidlof und
Prof. Oskar Kreisky, Kurt Goldhagen, Emil Maurer und Walter Bondy, Irma
Königsberg, Gertrud Raubitschek und Dr. Hedwig Mautner und viele andere:
Tausende jüdische SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen wurden 1938 unter der
NS-Gewaltherrschaft von ihren Schulen vertrieben. Diese Arbeit
dokumentiert die Vertreibungshandlungen an Wiener Gymnasien 1938 und
erfasst die Vertriebenen und die Ermordeten namentlich. Die
unterschiedlichen Phasen des Erinnerns und Vergessens der
Vertreibungsgeschichte in der eigenen Schulöffentlichkeit nach 1945
werden dargestellt. Mit der Analyse der Jahresberichte wird die
Auseinandersetzung mit Schulgeschichte, konkret der Umgang mit
Erinnerung an die Vertreibungsschicksale am eigenen Schulstandort,
thematisiert und reflektiert.
*Renate Mercsanits* unterrichtete am Wasagymnasium und an der
Radetzkyschule Religion, Englisch und Geschichte und führte dort
Gedenkprojekte durch. Erinnerungslernen ist ein wesentlicher Schwerpunkt
ihrer pädagogischen Arbeit in der Schule und der Erwachsenenbildung.

I am delighted to invite you all to the fourth installment of the
Trans*formations talk series at the Department of Philosophy, University
of Vienna. The talk series provides insights into recent developments in
trans* philosophizing.
The next talk, "On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective"
will be given by Emelia Stanley, University of Vienna, on March 11,
2025, at 16:30 in HS 2H (NIG, 2nd Floor).
Abstract:
The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to
recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for
children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the
existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it
was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale
closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of
puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to
outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of
scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the
scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective,
evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of
evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and
the current paradigm for trans* healthcare.
Bio:
Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of
Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and
mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK
and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective.
