The FWF Project "Arts in Philosophy : Philosophy in the Arts" warmly invites you to the upcoming lecture:

Dominik Zechner
"Crimes of the Heart"

June 18th, 2026, 18:30 – 20:00
Neues Institutsgebäude, Universitätsstraße 7
Hörsaal 3D, University of Vienna

Although separated by more than a century and shaped by radically different historical conditions, Edgar Allan Poe and Essex Hemphill correspond in unexpected ways. This lecture places Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" alongside Hemphill's poem "Voices" in order to explore the heart as an acoustic chamber where secrecy, guilt, desire, and violence become audible.

Dominik Zechner is Associate Professor of German and Comparative Literature at Rutgers University, USA. His work focuses on modernist literature, literary theory, and the philosophy of language. He is the author of Kafka und das Problem der Endlichkeit (Sonderzahl, 2024) and The Violence of Reading: Literature and Philosophy at the Threshold of Pain (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024).
