Dear VDP Members,
Our Director Benjamin Schnieder, our Student Representative Lisa
Tragbar, and I have been working over the past few months to address one
of the most critical issues facing our doctoral school, namely the
provision of office space for students without contracts at the
University of Vienna.
The purpose of this message is to inform you of the results of our work
and negotiations with the department's stakeholders. We will start A
pilot project this summer semester (see attachment), opening two hot
desks. We expect to expand the number of hot desks to seven, depending
on the results of the pilot.
Since this is a pilot project, we need to ask you to sign up for it. In
the enclosed documents you will find an explanation of how to do it.
I must also ask you to strictly follow the rules. This is extremely
important because the results of the pilot will ultimately depend on how
you, as a community of students, are able to work together. I am
confident that the results will be optimal.
I would also like to thank Chiara Dankl, Flora Löffelmann, and Jackson
Sawatzky, who have generously agreed to share their office for this
inititative.
I wish you a nice weekend,
Raphael
Dear PhD and master students,
As part of the Erasmus BIP program the University of Vienna still has
capacities to send PhD or master students to the

by March 6th.
Warm wishes,
Leonie
Dear all,
our next speaker in the Philosophy of Science Colloquium organized by the Institute Vienna Circle is Sebastian G. Speitel (IVC Fellow), who will give a talk on March 6, 4.45-6.15 pm.
All are welcome!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Sebastian G. Speitel (IVC Fellow)
Mathematical Determinacy
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 06/03/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A
Abstract:
The existence of non-standard models of important mathematical theories, such as first-order Peano-Arithmetic, threatens to undermine the claim of the moderate mathematical realist that non-mysterious access to mathematical structures is possible on the basis of our best mathematical theories. The move to frameworks stronger than FOL to articulate ‘better’ versions of these theories is denied to the moderate realist on the grounds that it merely shifts the indeterminacy ‘one level up’ into the meta-theory by — illegitimately, — assuming determinacy of the notions needed to formulate such logics.
In this talk I want to outline the beginnings of a response to the determinacy challenge facing the moderate mathematical realist. I argue that the unique determinability of notions that enable categorical characterizations of important mathematical structures provides grounds for claiming naturalistically acceptable access to these structures, sufficient to resolve the determinacy challenge. I will illustrate the idea by showing how the mathematical realist may achieve arithmetical determinacy, and discuss ways to extend this approach to richer mathematical theories.
Dear all,
I am delighted to invite you all to the fourth installment of the
Trans*formations talk series at the Department of Philosophy, University
of Vienna. The talk series provides insights into recent developments in
trans* philosophizing.
The next talk, "On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective"
will be given by Emelia Stanley, University of Vienna, on March 11,
2025, at 16:30 in HS 2 (NIG).
Abstract:
The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to
recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for
children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the
existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it
was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale
closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of
puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to
outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of
scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the
scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective,
evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of
evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and
the current paradigm for trans* healthcare.
Bio:
Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of
Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and
mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK
and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective.
There will be drinks and snacks kindly provided by the Vienna Doctoral
School of Philosophy (VDP)!

Paris, France
http://www.har-conf.eu [3]
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to invite you to the 4th _International Conference on
Human and Artificial Rationality_ (HAR 2025), which will take place in
Paris, France. This year's conference will be held at the_ Facultés
Libres de Philosophie et de Psychologie (IPC)_ in the heart of Paris and
is now open for the submission of extended abstracts for individual
talks.
The conference on Human and Artificial Rationality's main focus is on
computational approaches to human reasoning (in the broad sense,
including judgments, decision-making, problem-solving, pragmatics, …),
its criticism, and how human-like artificial reasoning can be. Regarding
human rationality, this includes not only formal models of rationality
but also the investigation of the different factors that influence or
direct human reasoning (including automatic processes and deliberate
thinking). Regarding artificial rationality, this does not simply
include artificial computational models, but how they relate to human
reasoning. Another area of interest is the rationality processes
involved in interacting with artificial and human agents.
Following peer review, accepted papers will be published as a volume _of
Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) [4]_LNCS volumes are submitted
for indexing in the Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI), part
of Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science; Scopus; EI Engineering Index;

(6) CALL FOR PAPERS (Passau, Deadline: 01.04.2025)
Panel: Metaphern, Beispiele, Narrationen
Call for Papers für das Panel: _Metaphern, Beispiele, Narrationen_ im
Rahmen der XII. Tagung für Praktische Philosophie 25./26. September 2025
neu entdeckt (vgl. Hämäläinen 2016: 17-24). Positionen, die Literatur
als eigenständiges Medium ethischer Überlegungen verteidigen - u.a.
Philosophie? Wie funktionieren sie? Wofür sollte man Metaphern verwenden
und was ist dabei zu beachten?
* Welche Rolle spielen literarische Beispiele in Argumentationen der
praktischen Philosophie? Was leisten sie im Unterschied zu anderen
Beispielen?
* Welche Rolle spielen narrative Elemente in der praktischen
Philosophie? Um welche Erzählungen handelt es sich? Welchen Einfluss
philosophische Kontexte? Was geht verloren, wo liegen Potenziale dieses
Vorgehens?

entwickeln. Wir freuen uns insbesondere über Einreichungen von
Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen.
Beiträge können sich beispielsweise mit folgenden Themenfeldern
beschäftigen (aber auch andere Themen sind möglich):
Kants Moralphilosophie:
- Freiheit und Handlungstheorie
- Pflichten, ihre Begründung und Systematik
- Kants Tugendlehre
- Kants Moralphilosophie und heutige Probleme der Angewandten Ethik
Kants Rechtsphilosophie:

(8) CALL FOR PAPERS (Special Issue, Deadline: 15.12.2025)
Philosophical Studies: Semantics and Memory
We invite submissions for a special issue of _Philosophical Studies_ on
topics lying at the widely construed intersection of semantics and
philosophy of memory.
_Description_
Recent work on reference in memories from dreams, on self-referential
memory contents, and mnemic accuracy, among others, has shown the high
relevance of semantic concepts (broadly construed) to issues in
philosophy of memory. However, philosophical exploration of the topics
at the intersection of semantics and memory is still in its early
stages. The purpose of this Special Issue is to unite researchers
working on more traditional problems within the philosophy of memory,
along with theorists focusing on issues in semantics, such as
philosophers of language, linguists, etc.
_Submission deadline:_ 15 December 2025
Confirmed invited contributors:
* Kyle Blumberg (University of Melbourne)
* Robert Hopkins (New York University)
* Susanna Schellenberg (Rutgers University)
* Jeff Speaks (University of Notre Dame)

_Topics _of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:
* What (kinds of entities) are the referents of a memory/what a memory
"is about"?
* What determines a memory's reference? How is the reference relation
established?
* What kind of entity are the contents of mnemic representations? What
are their properties? (e.g. truth-evaluability, context-dependence,
indexicality, ...)
* What is the right concept of mnemic accuracy? What determines memory
accuracy?
* How (if at all) do episodic memory contents differ from the contents
of other experiential attitudes (e.g. imagining, hallucinating,
dreaming)?
* Does the current state of scientific understanding of memory have any
bearing on the traditional philosophical conception of acquaintance?
* What are the objects of episodic remembering and other experiential
mental states?
* Can episodic(-like) remembering have generic or counterfactual
objects?
* Is episodic remembering factive?
* Does remembering entail knowing?
* Is the semantics of the verb "remember" continuous with the semantics
of other experiential attitude verbs (e.g. "imagine", "dream",
"hallucinate", "see")?
* Is semantic ascent a defensible approach to episodic remembering? Can
linguistic considerations yield insight into the nature of remembering?

Dear all,
on Saturday, March 15th, the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy is
organizing its Internal Workshop. The Internal Workshop provides you
with a space to present your work; no matter whether it is a finished
theory that you just feel like presenting, or an early draft you need
some feedback on. The topic of your work could be anything, so long as
it is broadly philosophy adjacent. This is your opportunity to practice,
develop and share your ideas. Additionally, there will be ample time
throughout the day to socialize, continue discussing, and enjoy a
coffee/snack break.
If you are interested in presenting something, please email
veronika.lassl(a)univie.ac.at until March 8th at the latest. If possible,
include a title for your talk (and ideally a 100-200 word abstract). The
format is very relaxed and informal, so no worries if anything about the
content of your proposal changes. We usually allot 45-minute slots per
person, with about 25-30 minutes for your talk and 20-15 minutes for the
Q&A. If you want a shorter session (e.g. if you only want to give a
15-minute talk), please tell us in your email. Also, if you have any
preferences about when during the day your talk will take place (in the
morning/afternoon...), please include that as well.
If you need additional inspiration, you can check out the WFAP's website
(https://wfap.philo.at/internal-workshop/ [1]) and see what people
presented in the previous years.
The workshop will take place in room 3D, NIG.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Best,
Veronika Lassl

Liebe Studierende der Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy,
