(University of Turin)
ACADEMIC SUCCESS IN AMERICA: ANALYTIC PHILOSOPHY AND THE DECLINE OF
WITTGENSTEIN
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 03/04/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
3A
Abstract:
There is a rather widespread consensus, among historians of philosophy,
concerning the decline of Wittgenstein amid recent analytic philosophy.
However, the exact import of such a decline, its chronological
development, as well as its causes and several other features, are
difficult to ascertain with the traditional methods of the history of
philosophy. In this talk we apply a distant reading approach, and a
variety of other quantitative methods, to provide a more reliable and
accurate account of Wittgenstein's decline. We focus on a corpus
consisting of the metadata of US PhD dissertations in philosophy from
1981 to 2010 (although other kinds of data are also taken into
consideration), and we try to relate the topic of the dissertation to
the success of the candidate in his/her subsequent academic career. The
results of this analysis, corroborated by other evidence, allow us to
put forth the more reliable and accurate account just hinted at, and at
the same time to suggest - as a contribution to external history of
philosophy - a plausible mechanism at the basis of the decline itself,
notably a process driven by those who controlled the recruitment
policies in the philosophy departments.

Dear all,
You are hereby invited to the next "Physics meets Philosophy" talk by
Samuel C. Fletcher (University of Oxford)
Title: Spare the Rod: Relativity as Pure Chronometry (see abstract
below)
Date: March 28th (Friday)
Time: 11:00-12:30
Location: IQOQI Seminar room (Boltzmanngasse 3, 2nd floor)
Zoom link (for those that cannot join in person):
https://univienna.zoom.us/j/62116122970?pwd=lStKbUlbkGbPghncW9Dj3RW8tUmuAG.1
Abstract:
At the dawn of general relativity's golden age in the 1950s, Irish
mathematician and physicist John Synge proposed to reduce spatial
concepts to temporal concepts. Synge argued that the structure of the
spacetime metric allows one to define length in terms of time, a
reduction of chronogeometry to what he calls pure chronometry. Synge's
arresting proposal nevertheless has two problems. First, he retains an
inadequate operationalist definition of durations in terms of "standard
clocks." Second, his technical argument only defines infinitesimal
length in terms of infinitesimal durations. In light of these
criticisms, I defend a more moderate version of Synge's thesis and
sketch a mathematical argument to establish it.

Dear all,
This is a kind reminder for tomorrow's talk of the PACE/KiC
Metaphilosophical Talk Series by
Amie Thomasson, Dartmouth College
Title: Starting a step back: Functional Pluralism and the Work of
Metaphysics
Date: March 27th, 2025 (Thursday)
Time: 16:45-18:15
Location: Hörsaal 50, Hauptgebäude (2.Stock, Stiege 8) -
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien
Abstract:
Metaphysics traditionally answers questions such as “Are there
properties, universals, numbers, composite artifacts, fictional
characters…?’ ‘(If so), what are they like? How are they related to
minds, physical objects, etc.? Does ‘positing’ these things add
explanatory power to our theories?’… In this paper I will argue that we
should begin our questioning back a step, and begin by asking: “How does
talk of properties, numbers, ... enter language, and what functions does
it serve?” For doing so (I will argue) enables us to reevaluate many
classic metaphysical debates, to reassess prominent criteria used in
metaphysics, and to redirect metaphysics to more fruitful pursuits.
We look forward to seeing you!
Best wishes,

(3) CALL FOR PAPERS (Hannover, Deadline: 15.05.2025)
Student Conference: Science and Philosophy - Shared History, Diverging
Paths?
We are pleased to announce the student conference _Science and
Philosophy - Shared History, Diverging Paths?,_ which will take place on
_25-26 July 2025_ at _Leibniz University Hannover. _
We invite _Bachelor's and Master's students_ to submit their abstracts.
Participation in the conference is free for everyone and _some financial
support is available for international participants._ Please find the
full call for abstracts and more information in _our website [2]_. Feel
free to contact us at _team(a)sciphihan.de_ with any questions.
Description:
The question of the relationship between philosophy and science is as
old as the respective practices themselves. In recent debates, however,
it may seem as if both have grown out of sync, talking past each other,
often with little or no respect for each other's realm and method, their
arguments and positions. Our conference focuses on three main themes to
address this gap:
_I. HISTORICAL AND COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS_
We will examine _the relationship between philosophy and (the)
science(s)_, their emergence, differing methods, and potential decline,
_across different historical periods_, including, but not limited, to
the _Western canon_ from ancient to contemporary philosophy.
Participants who are interested in _non-Western traditions_ (such as
Islamicate or Buddhist philosophy) may submit a paper that does not
correspond to the periodisation mentioned above.
_II. PHILOSOPHY OF THE SCIENCES_
In this section we address key thematic areas in _contemporary
philosophy of scientific fields_, e.g. philosophy of biology, philosophy
of physics, philosophy of the social sciences. These contributions
should focus on the relationship between philosophy and one defined
scientific field, and/or on the different methodologies and
characteristics of the philosophy of the hard sciences vs the philosophy
of the soft sciences.
_III. META-REFLECTION OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE_
explore the respective _roles, boundaries, and evolving relationship
between philosophy and science_, as well as emerging intersections
between them.
Organisers: Johannes Baer, Anni Bukowski, Seung Hoon Hahm, Amir Latifi,
Kristina Malzahn, and Paulina Oppermann

Workshop of the DFG Emmy-Noether Project 'A Sensible World'
_Secondary Qualities and the Epistemology of Perception_
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 10-11 April 2025
The workshop aims to discuss the relationship between theories of
secondary qualities and the epistemology of perception, both
historically (with the help of figures from the phenomenological
tradition and early analytic philosophy) and theoretically. It is based
on the idea that different accounts of secondary qualities are proper to
create different epistemological problems concerning perception. In
particular, eliminativists about colors, sounds, etc., have to explain
to what extent our perception of physical reality is still veridical,
while naive realists have to explain how our naive beliefs can be
compatible with the conclusions of the natural sciences, especially
physics, whose worldview includes nothing like colors, sounds, etc. as
given to us in ordinary experience.

(6) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Hannover, 25-27.02.2026, Submission
Deadline: 01.06.2025)
Phil-Econ-Model Lab, University of Hanover, 25-27 Feb 2026
Dear fellow economists and philosophers of economics,
We are pleased to invite you to our Phil-Econ-Model Lab (PEM-Lab), a
workshop taking place from 25-27 February 2026 at the University of
Hanover, Germany. With this workshop exclusively for early career
scholars, we offer a venue for cutting-edge research at the interface of
(a) philosophy of economics and (b) values in science debates. Namely,
we want to investigate in-how-far non-epistemic value judgements enter
the modelling process in economic models currently important in policy
design.
We aim to create a unique collaborative environment aside from the
beaten paths of conference sessions: rather than merely presenting
worked-out proposals and finished papers, we want to think together
about novel ideas and shape joint future projects in real-time. Thus,
the PEM-Lab will consist of two distinct phases: First, a set of online
reading group sessions to discuss the relevant literature in connection
to our own research ideas taking place in January and February 2026.
Here, we get to know each other and each other's work. Second, an
in-person meeting in Hanover (Germany) at the end of February 2026 to
deep-dive into debates where we have left off. The aim here is to foster
international collaboration. Please find more information about the
PEM-Lab's subject matter, structure, dates and other details here [4].
We encourage submissions from all early PhD students who are working on
the nexus of values in science and models in economics regardless of the
disciplinary affiliation. We especially encourage applications from PhD
students from non-European and North American universities and ask for
circulation in relevant communities if you happen to know some. We will
assist attendees with visa applications, accommodation and are securing
funding to provide travel grants for scholars without sufficient
institutional means.
_Submission and Deadline_
Please prepare the following documents and submit your application
through the application form [5]:
1. A letter of motivation (max 800 words) including a brief summary
of your previous academic work and a concise statement of what you want
to learn and work on during the workshop. Note: this should not be a
fleshed-out research proposal, novel and conceptual ideas are welcome!
2. A CV
Submission Deadline: 1 June 2025
Decisions communicated by: 1 July 2025
Please visit the project's web page for more details regarding the
selection process.
