Graduate Workshop "Explaining Explaining" 2025 University of Vienna, Austria September 1-3, 2025 We are pleased to announce the Graduate Workshop on "Explaining Explaining" to be held in Vienna from September 1-3, 2025. The workshop is organized under the auspices of, and funded by, the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP). THEME Explanations recur as a constant and central theme in philosophy: philosophers contend that in mathematics, proofs are favoured for their explanatory values; in the sciences, theories are selected according to explanatory virtues they exhibit; in metaphysics, explanatory relations direct our accounts of concepts and ontological priority; in philosophy more broadly, we offer and compare explanations for facets of reality in order to resolve conceptual problems. CONFIRMED SPEAKERS Prof. Dr. Francesca Poggiolesi (CNRS, Paris) Prof. Dr. Chiara Lisciandra (Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf) Prof. Dr. Benjamin Schnieder (University of Vienna, Vienna) Fourth speaker to be confirmed SUBMISSIONS We invite graduate students (Master and PhD) to present their original work on topics related to the philosophy of explanation at the workshop. That includes approaches from different areas, including but not limited to logic, metaphysics, philosophy of science and so on. The time allocated for each presentation is 30 minutes, including discussion. Students from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply to promote diversity and equity in academia. Abstracts (up to 500 words, references not included) should be sent in PDF file format to workshop.explaining(a)gmail.com. Date: 10/04/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: Much philosophical attention has recently been paid to Conceptual Engineering - or, the intentional modification of concepts by philosophers in order to achieve epistemic, ethical, or political ends. The most controversial aspect of conceptual engineering are its aims, but there is also much debate over the mechanism by which the process could even be carried out. In this project, I will propose a mechanism derived from the work of Friedrich Waismann by which intentional conceptual amelioration can - and does - occur. I will then argue that this account of conceptual engineering solves a number of standing problems in the literature, but in doing so, places some key checks on the ambition of conceptual engineering as a project.

The event aims to bring together researchers from philosophy and psychology to discuss the development of the concept of similarity following Carnap's "Aufbau", the subsequent famous criticism by Nelson Goodman and its influence on psychological theories. Even opponents of the doctrine often concende that, in retrospect, utilitarians were often right to oppose discriminatory laws and customs. The idea of progress has also been used by utilitarians as an argumentative resource against competing normative theories. Not only in comparatively young democracies but also in time-honored ones such as the US, the foundations of liberal, constitutional democracy are crumbling. As early as the 19th century, Tocqueville presented a groundbreaking theory of democracy, examining both its bright and dark sides as a form of society and government in America and Europe. While current political theory - especially radical democratic theory - focuses on criticism of liberal democracy and its swan song, we aim to revive Tocqueville's theory of democracy and use it in four systematic panels to ask whether liberal democracy can be saved rather than abandoned. The talk will be given by Remco Heesen (LSE). When: Thursday, 10.04.2025, 15:00 - 17:00 Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien) The Division of Cognitive Labour under Poisson Productivity When a community of academics faces a research problem and multiple methodological approaches to solving it, how much effort should they devote to each approach to maximise their chances of solving the problem and minimise the time to a solution? This problem is known as the division of cognitive labour (DCL). More specifically, Philip Kitcher, Michael Strevens, and Kevin Zollman have asked whether and to what extent academics’ expectations of credit for solving the problem can act as an invisible hand to produce an efficient DCL without a need for top-down planning. Here I revisit this question using a modelling framework (key ingredient: academic productivity follows a Poisson distribution) that has more empirical support than Kitcher’s, Strevens’, and Zollman’s, and is also more flexible in that it can be used to address broader questions about credit incentives. The somewhat surprising finding is that in this framework the DCL problem becomes essentially trivial. I’d like to discuss implications for how we think about the model and/or the DCL problem. Dear VDP Researchers, the Director of Studies Philosophy (Studienprogrammleitung Philosophy) publishes a call for applications for "external" teaching in the department of Philosophy every year. The current SPL Michael Staudigl has informed about the respective procedures and opportunities for predocs / PhD students in one of our Pragmatic Academic events in January, this year. In the context of the current call for applications for the year 2025/26 Paulina Sliwa and Max Kölbel asked us to invite you to an information meeting about external teaching that is organised by the Cluster of Excellence Knowledge in Crisis. The meeting is open to all PhD students in the department and will take place on Tuesday 8 April from 14:00-15:00 in Room 3A, NiG. Nach einer wiedereinmal spannenden Studi-Konferenz im letzten Jahr möchten wir euch erneut die Möglichkeit bieten, eure eigenen Thesen auszuarbeiten und vorzustellen. Conference Track: Responsible and Trusted AI: An Interdisciplinary Persp., Nov. 1-5, 2025, Rhodes As AI systems increasingly permeate diverse sectors and influence many aspects of our lives, ensuring their responsible, trustworthy, and safe development and deployment is more critical than ever. Addressing these challenges requires moving beyond purely technical considerations to grapple with complex societal, ethical, and governance questions. Building on the success of similar tracks at AISoLA 2023 and 2024, this track seeks to foster interdisciplinary dialogue by bringing together researchers from a broad range of fields. We invite contributions from philosophy, law, psychology, economics, sociology, political science, informatics, and other relevant disciplines. This track offers a platform to share recent research and collaboratively explore the societal implications of designing, implementing, and regulating AI systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Clarifying key concepts ("trustworthy AI," "trusted AI," "responsible AI" etc.) * Balancing benefits and risks * Ethical design * Addressing public concerns * Legal implications (including questions of compliance and accountability) * Regulatory frameworks (e.g. challenges of complying with the upcoming EU AI Act) * Labor market impact * AI for social good (leveraging AI for societal benefit) * Responsibility and accountability * Human oversight * Legal liability (civil liability and other legal responsibilities in cases of malfunctioning AI systems) * Ownership and authorship * Copyright and revenue sharing. * AI in education * Bias and fairness (identifying, addressing, and mitigating bias, discrimination, and algorithmic unfairness in AI systems) * Transparency and explainability * Holistic model assessment (evaluating AI models within broader decision-making contexts, focusing on acceptability, trustworthiness, and user trust) * Normative choices in AI design This track is part of the AISoLA conference, which serves as an open forum for discussing recent advancements in machine learning and their far-reaching implications. The reception of his philosophical thinking, which has so far concentrated on his philosophy of mathematics, has, however, been mostly negative or sceptical. He is, for example, widely regarded as holding onto "pre-critical" mathematical realism, which is untenable by modern standards of philosophical rigor. However, the recent edition of Kurt Gödel's Philosophical Notebooks has opened new perspectives on his philosophy of mathematics along with new aspects of his general philosophical thinking, including the metaphysics of concepts and ideas, the ethical conduct of life, agency, and free will. The proposed topical collection is intended to counter both the narrow focus on Gödel's philosophy of mathematics as well as the currently prevailing interpretation of the latter. Moreover, it has the aim of shedding new light on his views on topics that have so far not commonly been associated with Gödel, such as his thoughts on agency and free will or individual applied ethics. The proposed topical collection intends to appeal to philosophers in theoretical and practical philosophy alike, as well as to philosophically inclined logicians and mathematicians. Mai 2025 Viele philosophische Ideen und Argumente würden mehr Leute interessieren als nur das Fachpublikum - doch wie schreibt man einen guten, auch für Laien verständlichen philosophischen Text? Im Workshop "Philosophie in der Öffentlichkeit: Wie schreibe ich für philosophische Blogs?" der Akademie für Politische Bildung und PhilPublica mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Philosophie und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Analytische Philosophie vom 23. bis 25. Juli soll genau das erarbeitet werden. Wie kann man komplexe philosophische Gedanken für ein breites Publikum aufbereiten? Eine Möglichkeit, niedrigschwelligen Zugang herzustellen, bieten Philosophie-Blogs. Dabei können einerseits Inhalte aus der akademischen Forschung für ein nicht-philosophisches Publikum aufbereitet werden. Umgekehrt können Blogbeiträge aktuelle gesellschaftliche und politische Debatten aufgreifen und durch philosophische Perspektiven bereichern. Vom 23. bis 25 Juli können Teilnehmende beim Workshop der Akademie für Politische Bildung und PhilPublica mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Philosophie (DGPhil) und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Analytische Philosophie (GAP) lernen, wie sich philosophische Gedanken in die Öffentlichkeit tragen lassen, und wie man dabei authentisch bleiben, sich also auf die Bedürfnisse des Publikums einlassen kann, ohne den eigenen Anspruch zu unterlaufen. _Workshop_ Lars Weisbrod, Philosoph und Redakteur im Feuilleton von DIE ZEIT sowie Dr. Gottfried Schweiger und Dr. Sarah Rebecca Strömel vom Philosophieblog praefaktisch.de führen in das das philosophische Schreiben für eine breitere Öffentlichkeit und speziell Blogs ein. Im Anschluss begleiten sie die Teilnehmenden beim Verfassen eigener Blogbeiträge und geben schließlich Feedback zu den Entwürfen.
