In der Soziologie wird erreichbarer Frieden als ein messbarer Zustand der Konfliktbewältigung verstanden. Politisch könnten wir ihn als Ausgestaltung von Machtverhältnissen oder die verhandlungsgeleitete, praktische Umsetzbarkeit eines Nicht-Kriegszustands verstehen. Der Workshop zielt darauf ab, diese Perspektiven miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen. Im Zeitalter der Wiederaufrüstung Europas stellen sich moralische, politische und institutionelle Fragen nach der Erreichbarkeit von Frieden: Was macht einen erreichbaren Frieden aus? Normative generics are generic sentences like their descriptive counterparts, but rather than merely describing a kind of generalization, their meanings are said to have a distinctively more normative flavor. How the meanings of normative and descriptive generics differ, and the source of the normative flavor, is a matter of intense debate, and further complicates the already challenging landscape of existing accounts of generics. The difference between descriptive and normative generics has been observed in important work going back to the 1970s (cf. especially Lawler or Burton-Roberts), with other significant work following some decades later (Carlson, Greenberg, Cohen, a.o.). Work by Leslie brought the topic to particular prominence in the last decade, especially in philosophy. This workshop addresses open questions in the analysis of normative generics--pertaining to their semantics, their pragmatics, their discourse functions, and the kinds of cognition that might underpin their use. Therefore, if we have free will, it is plausible to assume that our free will is also a product of evolution. But do we actually have free will? Is it - at least sometimes - up to us what we decide to do? Strikingly, philosophers have long ignored biology when it comes to answering these questions. Instead, they have quibbled about whether and how free will might fit into a supposedly deterministic universe as studied by (classical) physics. Only recently has the debate about free will begun to open up to biological considerations - so far, however, mostly with sceptical results. We are told that it is not we but our brains that decide what we want and how we act, or that our genes determine our decisions, or other biological factors beyond our control. In this _Young Academy Distinguished Lecture_, Alfred R. Mele, Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University, and Anne Sophie Meincke, member of the Young Academy and philosopher at the University of Vienna, will take an overdue fresh look at the relationship between free will and biology: Can biology help us understand and perhaps even defend free will? If so, how? If not, why not? To make progress here, it is necessary to critically analyse the arguments put forward against free will in the name of biology. Do these sceptical arguments really show what they claim to show? If not, then there is room to explore what constructive role biology could play in an attempt to defend free will against scepticism. Perhaps the common conception of a biological organism as some kind of deterministic machine is not accurate after all? How should we understand organisms instead? What biological function could free will serve? Taking evolution seriously also suggests considering the possibility that free will may not be a privilege of human organisms. _First Lecture:_ Alfred R. However, free will in this strong, 'libertarian' sense - involving a choice between alternatives - is increasingly being questioned by philosophers and scientists. While traditional concerns were predicated on the deterministic laws of classical physics, today sceptics also cite biology and neuroscience. We are told that our genes or our brains, not we, decide what we want and how we act. This conference gathers leading experts in philosophy, biology and neuroscience who argue the opposite. Cutting-edge research into the biological and neural basis of human and animal agency challenges deterministic assumptions, adding to doubts from quantum physics and pointing to non-reductionist views of agency and action causation. EurAsia Young Scholars Award for Research in East and Southeast Asia (Alpha+) The Cluster of Excellence EurAsian Transformations offers funding for extended study and research stays in East and Southeast Asia. The focus is on using digital tools to explore cultural heritage and related economic/social topics. Who can apply? One of the reasons why it still lacks a precise, agreed definition is that the problem may take very different forms depending on the interpretation of QM embraced. I propose to identify the common root of the puzzle in an interpretation-independent way (i.e. as a property of the probabilities only) and derive its philosophical consequences. The key point is that the violation of the total probability formula in QM does not allow to construct an objective ontology, independent from epistemology. This enables to: (i) better compare the different interpretations of QM; (ii) propose a reason why QM and GR are so fundamentally incompatible, not relying on purely mathematical or technical arguments.
