Dear all, I am delighted to invite you all to the fourth installment of the Trans*formations talk series at the Department of Philosophy, University of Vienna. The talk series provides insights into recent developments in trans* philosophizing. The next talk, "On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective" will be given by Emelia Stanley, University of Vienna, on March 11, 2025, at 16:30 in HS 2 (NIG). Abstract: The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective, evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and the current paradigm for trans* healthcare. Bio: Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective. We are searching for a _Researcher (24 months, fulltime employment)_ within the project "Climate, Plastics and Sustainability: Ontology and Operationalisation" (ClimOO), funded by the Autonomous Province Bolzano/South Tyrol. The project is a joint research effort of the PTH Brixen (lead partner), Eco Research Bolzano, the Laimburg Research Centre, and Fraunhofer Italia, and will involve an interdisciplinary group of researchers from these institutions. In the subproject hosted at the PTH Brixen, we will help to analyse how climate and environmental impacts are defined in existing standards and good practices, and how climate change and (micro)plastic pollution in agriculture are operationalised. We will use these results to develop a reference ontology to integrate the data collected by the various methods identified. Necessary requirements for the position at the PTH are: a) Master degree or equivalent in Philosophy or another relevant subject; a PhD or other research experience will be an asset. b) Expertise in at least one of the following areas: philosophy of science, applied ontology, knowledge representation, environment and sustainability. c) Ideally working knowledge of first-order logic, the Web Ontology Language (OWL), the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) and the Protégé editor. d) Proficiency in written and spoken English. The conference on Human and Artificial Rationality's main focus is on computational approaches to human reasoning (in the broad sense, including judgments, decision-making, problem-solving, pragmatics, …), its criticism, and how human-like artificial reasoning can be. September 2025 Universität Passau. _Metaphern, Beispiele, Narrationen - Literarische Texte und Stilmittel in Argumentationen der Praktischen Philosophie_ Organisation: Marie Hirsch und Johanna Sinn (Universität Passau) Welchen Stellenwert haben literarische Texte für die Philosophie und insbesondere für die Ethik? Literarische Mittel wie die Metapher wurden von Aristoteles „bis ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein fast ausschließlich als rhetorische Figur betrachtet" und galten im philosophischen Text lange als verpönt, ja sogar als „fehlerhaft" (Weinreich 2017). Dagegen hält Blumenberg Metaphern für „genuine Denkmodelle, die Erkenntnis beförder[n]" (ebd.). Im „literary turn" der analytischen Moralphilosophie wird das Verhältnis von Ethik und Literatur ebenfalls neu entdeckt (vgl. Hämäläinen 2016: 17-24). Positionen, die Literatur als eigenständiges Medium ethischer Überlegungen verteidigen - u.a. Peter Winch, Cora Diamond, Iris Murdoch und Martha Nussbaum - vertreten dabei häufig ein weites Verständnis von Moralphilosophie. Diese soll nicht nur klare Prinzipien guten Handelns bestimmen, sondern sich umfassender mit Moral auseinandersetzen, etwa in Fragen zum guten Leben, zu Emotionen, Wahrnehmung oder Tugenden. Literatur gilt dabei als Ort dieser Auseinandersetzung - und zwar möglichst die Lektüre ganzer Werke, nicht die Verwendung einzelner literarischer Elemente (Vgl. Brudney 1990: 418; Hämäläinen 2016: 18f). Denn die ästhetische Integrität literarischer Texte sei entscheidend für die moralphilosophische Relevanz von Literatur. Literatur wandert aber oft auch in kleineren Ausschnitten und Formen in philosophische Argumentationen - in Form von Beispielen oder anderen narrativen Formen und in weitreichenden, aber unauffälligen Metaphern. Das Panel möchte Verwendungsweisen literarischer Texte in der praktischen Philosophie nachgehen, mit Beiträgen z.B. zu folgenden Fragen: * Wie verhält sich Literatur zu praktischer Philosophie? However, philosophical exploration of the topics at the intersection of semantics and memory is still in its early stages. Invitation to present at WFAP internal workshop

Dear all, on Saturday, March 15th, the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy is organizing its Internal Workshop. The Internal Workshop provides you with a space to present your work; no matter whether it is a finished theory that you just feel like presenting, or an early draft you need some feedback on. The topic of your work could be anything, so long as it is broadly philosophy adjacent. This is your opportunity to practice, develop and share your ideas. Additionally, there will be ample time throughout the day to socialize, continue discussing, and enjoy a coffee/snack break. If you are interested in presenting something, please email veronika.lassl(a)univie.ac.at until March 8th at the latest. If possible, include a title for your talk (and ideally a 100-200 word abstract). The format is very relaxed and informal, so no worries if anything about the content of your proposal changes. We usually allot 45-minute slots per person, with about 25-30 minutes for your talk and 20-15 minutes for the Q&A. If you want a shorter session (e.g. if you only want to give a 15-minute talk), please tell us in your email. Also, if you have any preferences about when during the day your talk will take place (in the morning/afternoon...), please include that as well. [Reminder] CFA - VDP Writing Retreat at Stift Zwettl (July 7–12, 2025)

Call for Applications: VDP Writing Retreat at Stift Zwettl (July 7–12, 2025) The VDP Writing Retreat will take place for the first time from Monday 7 July to Saturday 12 July 2025 in the serene Stift Zwettl (Lower Austria). The retreat will provide a setting for doctoral candidates in philosophy to dedicate themselves to their dissertation in a peaceful, distraction-free environment. It offers an opportunity to make progress on their work in a structured and supportive peer environment. During the retreat, participants will follow a program carefully designed to support the writing process. The program includes 4-5 writing sessions per day (1 to 1.5 hours each), providing structured blocks of uninterrupted time for focused work, as well as writing exercises to stimulate creativity and overcome potential writing blocks. Additionally, there will be writing circles where participants can share their progress, give and receive feedback and engage in peer support. Overview: * Dates: Monday, July 7 – Saturday, July 12, 2025 * Location: Stift Zwettl, Lower Austria * Expenses covered by the VDP: * Accommodation (mostly shared rooms for two people) * Full board (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner) - drinks are not provided * Travel costs Eligibility Criteria: * You are a member of the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy. * You have passed the FÖP, signed your Dissertation Agreement and have submitted your Annual Reports (on time or until the Writing Retreat). PhDs für Fokusgruppen zum univie Website Launch - PhDs for focus groups for the univie website launch

Liebe Alle, wie ihr alle wisst, steht die Uni Wien 2025 vor einem großen Website-Relaunch. Um sich die Perspektive von Studierenden reinzuholen, werden Fokusgruppen mit BA und MA Studierende und auch Fokusgruppen mit PhDs organisiert (DLE Kommunikation in Kooperation mit unserer und anderer DLEs). Ziel ist es mittels dem Input aus den Fokusgruppen spezifisch Websites rund um alle Fragestellungen vor, während und nach dem Zulassungsprozess bestmöglich neu zu gestalten. Wir sind dabei Personen für diese Fokusgruppen zu rekrutieren; leider hatten wir auf eine Massmailer Aussendung (an ca. 500 zugelassenen PhDs im ersten Semester) bis dato nur eine Anmeldung!!! Wir brauchen aber ca. insgesamt 30 Personen (idealerweise im ersten Semester mit einer Mischung aus Finanzierten und Internationals). Ich wäre euch sehr dankbar, wenn ihr uns unterstützen könntet, PhDs für die Fokusgruppen zu rekrutieren. Aus unserer Erfahrung sagen Leute zu, wenn sie persönlich angesprochen werden (und nicht mittels einer Aussendung). Der Fachinformationsdienst Philosophie (FID Philosophie), dessen Aufbau an der Universität Köln von der DFG gefördert wird, bietet nun allen ehemaligen WBG-Autor:innen und Herausgeber:innen an, Ihren Büchern auf www.philportal.de [1] kostenlos ein dauerhaft gesichertes neues Zuhause zu geben, das allen daran Interessierten den kostenfreien Zugang (open access) zu allen ehemals von der WBG veröffentlichten Werken in Form von pdf-Dateien ermöglichen wird, deren Urheber:innen dies wünschen. Da Sie dem FID Philosophie dafür nur ein darauf bezogenes nichtausschließliches Nutzungsrecht einräumen müssen, verbleiben alle anderen Rechte bei Ihnen. Summer School Call for Applications (Deadline: February 15, 2025) 23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC) The History and Epistemology of Econometrics Vienna, July 7-11, 2025 https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/ Course Description Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of its results in policy decisions and evaluation. The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues. The course is also structured around a particular point of view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in science. Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include: * History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be discussed in the course * The Vienna Circle and econometrics * Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research * Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how they relate to each other * Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic variables from a modeling point of view * Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness * The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables? * Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the proper interpretation of results obtained through search * Different approaches to the nature of causation and different strategies of causal inference * The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled, natural, and field experiments * The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it Main Lecturers: Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University) Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics, philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics, the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics, Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics, and applied econometrics. Jennifer Jhun (Duke University) Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. Her main research interests are in the philosophy of science, especially philosophy of economics, but also in issues in other areas, such as psychology and physics. She is currently engaged on a project that investigates antitrust from a historical and philosophy-of-science perspective: Whats the Point of ceteris Paribus? or, How to Understand Supply and Demand Curves. (Joint with Matthew Panhans, Federal Trade Commission) Guest Lecturer: Marcel Boumans (University of Utrecht) Marcel Boumans is historian and philosopher of science at Utrecht University. His main research focus is on understanding empirical research practices in science outside the lab from a philosophy of science-in-practice perspective. He is particularly interested in the practices of measurement and modelling and the role of mathematics in social science. The first step in these practices is to make sense of the available data. Visualisations play an important role in this. His current research project Vision and Visualisation is nearing completion with a book manuscript Shaping the Phenomena. The 1st day of the conference will focus on theory, covering empirical and philosophical research on cognition and its interpretations. The 2nd day will focus on various political, social and epistemic issues considered through the lens of empirical research. On the 3rd day, the conference will be centered around future directions of research in cognitive science, and its broader implications, based on the work presented during the first two days. The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two nights of the symposium. The participants of the conference will also be invited to attend the lecture and the proceeding reception. Throughout the conference, we will cover the following topics: • Conceptual change • Predictive Processing • Anticipation and Perception • Uncertainty and Reasoning • Activism in Science • Epistemic Trust • Addressing Climate Change • The Erosion of Democracy We welcome submissions from PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers at early stages of their career. Instructors: Justin Broackes (Brown), Cathy Mason (CEU), Silvia Panizza (UCD/UPSE), Rachael Wiseman (Liverpool) Dates: July 14th-18th, 2025 Deadline for application: March 30th, 2025 Location: Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG), Universitätstrasse 7, 1010 Wien Overview of the Topic Although Iris Murdoch is still best known for her novels, her philosophical work is finally beginning to receive the recognition that it deserves. An Oxford philosopher, educated during the Second World War and later employed there as a lecturer, Murdoch’s philosophy marks a significant departure from the dominant analytic tradition of her place and time: a return to a philosophy deeply attuned to the human condition and to metaphysical thinking. Murdoch’s ideas began to develop with a critique of the prevailing approaches to language and thought, later evolving into a novel conception of ethics. Engaged with both analytic and continental traditions, she proposed vision as the basic category of evaluation and freedom as the ability to see the world rightly, rather than as detachment from it. As opposed to the amoral view of metaphysics, she sought to reanimate the concept of a world that finds meaning through “the Good”. She writes in dialogue with a diverse range of philosophers, including Plato, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, French existentialists, and Derrida, among others, and she has had a strong influence on some of today’s best-known philosophers, including Cora Diamond, John McDowell, Martha Nussbaum, and Charles Taylor. The summer school aims to bring together promising young philosophers with some of the leading experts on Murdoch’s philosophical work. Participants will have the chance to engage with her major themes, uncover less-explored aspects of her work, and contribute to the ongoing discussion of her ideas with their own research.
