GAP Sondermail: Projekt zur Sichtbarkeit von Frauen

Liebe PhilosophINNEN*, ich arbeite an einem Projekt zur Sichtbarkeit von Frauen* in der Philosophie und produziere dafür die #erklärt-Videos für den GAP-YouTube-Kanal. Die Idee der Reihe ist: * Eine Philosophin* erklärt in etwa fünf Minuten einen Begriff, ein Gedankenexperiment, ein Problem, gibt einen ersten Einstieg in eine Debatte, etc. Es soll aber kein eigenes, kontroverses Material präsentiert werden, sondern eben wirklich etwas erklärt werden, das weitgehend akzeptiert, der Standard-View, etc. ist. Die Videos werden auch auf PhilPublica [1] geteilt. * Mit dem Projekt sprechen wir zunächst bewusst PhilosophINNEN* an. Es geht auch darum, Frauen* in der Philosophie sichtbarer zu machen, da bei vielen Laien noch das Bild des "alten, weißen, männlichen Philosophen" vorherrscht. Insbesondere Journalist:innen sollen so Anreize bekommen PhilosophINNEN* einzuladen und SchülerINNEN* dadurch ermutigt werden, dass Philosophie auch "etwas für sie sein kann". * Idealerweise richten sich die Themen hin und wieder nach den Philosophie-Lehrplänen aus, um Material zu generieren, das im Schulunterricht eingesetzt werden kann. Es gibt bereits ein Video mit Inga Bones zum Sorites-Paradox [2], das das Format illustriert. Ein Video mit mir selbst zu Fake News ist in Arbeit, Videos mit Sanja Dembić (Krankheit und psychische Störung) und Eva Weber-Guskar (KI und Emotionserkennung) folgen. Gern würde ich weitere PhilosophINNEN* für die Videoproduktion gewinnen. Wenn Sie sich vorstellen können, ein Video beizusteuern, freue ich mich über Nachricht. Was heißt das für Sie? Wenn Sie mitmachen, würde ich gerne jeweils einen Termin für die Skript-Einreichung (ca. 5min./ ca. 700 Wörter) und für den Videodreh (max. 60min. Drehzeit) vereinbaren. * Das Skript soll Ihnen möglichst wenig Arbeit bereiten. Sie dürfen gern das Thema wählen, das Ihnen am leichtesten fällt. Wenn Sie nur wenig Zeit haben, beschränken Sie sich gerne auf eine Stunde, in der Sie das gewünschte Thema in Stichpunkten strukturieren und anfangen auszuformulieren. Die Redaktion ist bei der Ausformulierung des Textes gern behilflich. Stellen Sie sich als Zuhörer:in eine interessierte Philosophie-Anfänger:in vor. * Sie müssen das Skript nicht auswendig lernen, wir werden den Text prompten, so dass Sie ihn ablesen können. * Die Redaktion übernimmt die vollständige Post-Production. Zur Aufnahme gibt es 3 Optionen: 1. Wir nehmen in unserem Studio in Berlin auf, wenn Sie einmal in Berlin sind. 2. Wir nehmen im Laufe der GAP.12 (8.9.-11.9.25; HHU Düsseldorf) auf, wo wir ein temporäres Studio aufbauen werden. 3. Wir geben Ihnen vorher ein Briefing für die Eigenproduktion und Sie nehmen bei sich auf. (Das hat bspw. Inga Bones gemacht, die dazu gern ihr Wissen teilt.) Call for Applications: VDP Writing Retreat at Stift Zwettl (July 7–12, 2025) The VDP Writing Retreat will take place for the first time from Monday 7 July to Saturday 12 July 2025 in the serene Stift Zwettl (Lower Austria). The retreat will provide a setting for doctoral candidates in philosophy to dedicate themselves to their dissertation in a peaceful, distraction-free environment. It offers an opportunity to make progress on their work in a structured and supportive peer environment. During the retreat, participants will follow a program carefully designed to support the writing process. The program includes 4-5 writing sessions per day (1 to 1.5 hours each), providing structured blocks of uninterrupted time for focused work, as well as writing exercises to stimulate creativity and overcome potential writing blocks. Additionally, there will be writing circles where participants can share their progress, give and receive feedback and engage in peer support. We cordially invite applications for a Postdoc within the research project Indeterminacy in Science funded by the FCT and hosted by the LanCog group at the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon. The project systematically investigates alleged instances of metaphysical indeterminacy, mind- and language-independent indeterminacy in the world, in science. It will both critically engage with arguments for the existence of indeterminacy in science, extend the scope of the investigation to, so far, under- or completely unexplored areas of the natural sciences, including relativistic physics, and elaborate and assess recent controversial suggestions to the effect that causal processes, or the laws of nature are indeterminate. An epistemic, an ontological, and a pragmatic problem can be associated with this premise. The epistemic problem concerns the relevance and validity of the knowledge that actors have gained or can gain about the social world. The ontological problem is based on assumptions about the nature of the social reality in which we act. Does this reality allow for a connection between the past and future based on human action? The pragmatic problem has to do with how our projects change because we act as part of the world, observe how we and others act, and make predictions about future states based on that observation. The common denominator of all problems is that something that is of our making cannot be independent of us. Within this tradition, many philosophers held that, among animals, only humans possess intellect and will--the higher cognitive and conative powers--which align them with even nobler beings, such as angels and God. This seemingly straightforward characterization of intellectual faculties raises profound questions that have been repeatedly explored and debated throughout Western philosophy. Key questions include: (1) Are these two intellectual faculties genuine entities or merely constructs? (2) What is the nature of these faculties, and what are their capabilities and limitations? (3) How do these faculties interact? Does the intellect govern the will, or does the will govern the intellect? (4) In what ways do these faculties relate to discussions of human freedom and morality, and how do they feature in anthropology and science? (5) How do these faculties relate to God, and how does this relationship influence the created world? Title: *From Pandoras Box to Pandoras Hope: Opening the Lid on Transdisciplinary Work in Public Health* Date: Thursday, January 30th 2025 Reading Circle: 1pm - 3pm Talk: 3pm - 5 pm Location: Room 3A, NIG Abstract of the talk (3-5 PM): Climate change, armed conflicts, rising inequities, pandemics, and the displacement of large population groups constitute some of the most pressing current concerns for the discipline of Public Health. These complex issues require intersectional analyses and solutions—and a turn to transdisciplinary research. This need is commonly voiced in Public Health literature and increasingly enacted through funding calls and commissions. In this talk, I want to show how the over-reliance on biomedical knowledge and its accompanying reductionism has left Public Health not only “de-socialized,” but current attempts to “add in” social science knowledge—as one pathway for transdisciplinarity—often fall short of the promise to transcend disciplinary boundaries and create more suitable types of knowledge. Starting with the work of John Ryle, Julius Tandler, and Andrija Stampar, I will provide a short overview of the historical development of Public Health and its separation from the field of Social Medicine. Using the examples of Michael Marmot and Camara Phyllis Jones on the "Social Determinants of Health," I will then present the changes in the field in its move towards structural explanations of health inequalities. Finally, I end on the work of Emily Yates-Doerr and her critique of the pervasive “determinants model,” showcasing the potential, affordances, and demands of true transdisciplinarity in Public Health today. Budget 2025

Dear VDP Members, This is to inform you that information about funding for events, grants and scholarships for the year 2025 is not available on Moodle. The Rectorate has increased our budget for this year. The budget for doctoral schools is calculated on the basis of the performance of the school, i.e. the number of graduates, the timely passing of the FÖP, the submission of the dissertation agreement, and the annual reports. One of the factors for this increase is the overall good performance for which you are responsible. On behalf of our Directors and Steering Committee, I would like to thank you for this. My special thanks go to each of the doctoral candidates who put a lot of effort into organizing these events and to our new SSC student assistant, Isabel Seelmann, who has worked very diligently and contributed with fresh ideas and work to make the FÖP a more comfortable space. A student conference and a workshop Tübingen, 15-17 April 2025 Organised by Silvia Caprioglio Panizza and Eva-Maria Düringer Funded by the DFG Research Grant Natural Badness: Suffering and Its Place in Contemporary Virtue Ethics We welcome abstract submissions for the student conference on 'Suffering and Attention' which will take place at the University of Tübingen on 15 April 2025. Students at all stages, from BA and MA to PhD, are very welcome to apply. Come and share your ideas in an inclusive, constructive, and non-adversarial environment! The conference will be followed by a workshop with invited speakers on 16 and 17 April 2025 (see below). Description: Suffering has always been topical. Where there is life, there is the capacity to suffer. The contemporary world is plagued by increasing wars, migration crises, and political extremism. Billions of animals suffer and die every day due to human consumption and climate change. Global mental health has been worsening for decades. But what precisely is suffering? It is more than pain, and it is more than things going badly. But what? And what, if anything, should we do about it? The nature of suffering has recently become a topic of lively debate in analytic philosophy. In Suffering and Virtue (2018), Michael Brady thinks of suffering as 'displeasures that we mind', while the volume The Philosophy of Suffering (2020), co-edited by Brady, David Bain and Jennifer Corns, collects a wide array of different views: suffering is conceived e.g. as negatively construing one's situation, as a severe mental disruption, or as an emotion directed at pain. Different as these views are, they all agree that suffering is essentially experiential. But not even this seems to be a given. Corns (2022) has recently argued that suffering is significantly disrupted agency, hence not essentially marked by any experience at all - a view shared by some virtue ethical stances on suffering who take suffering to consist in prevention of flourishing, experienced or not. The account of suffering we accept has a bearing on the way we will answer the ethical questions that suffering gives rise to: How do we engage with suffering, in ourselves and others? Do we have a duty always to alleviate or minimise it? Should we ever welcome it? Is it acceptable to look away, or do we have a responsibility to pay attention to it? And how do we attend to it without being crushed? The aim of this conference is to raise questions about the nature and ethics of suffering by putting in conversation contemporary analytic approaches with historical, continental, and non-Western traditions, and by broadening the scope to include reflections on the suffering of both human and non-human animals, environmental perspectives, and questions of suffering in the philosophy of medicine and mental health. * Students with an interest in the topic should feel encouraged to apply, even if their work does not fit neatly into any of the approaches outlined. Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to: - What is the nature of suffering? - Is suffering ever to be welcomed? - Simone Weil, attention and affliction - Suffering and attention in Buddhist philosophy - What does it mean to attend to suffering? They are of particular concern for all philosophers who take welfare to be (at least) one source for normative reasons. Evaluative and deontic considerations about welfare provide an array of fascinating philosophical questions. It is (quite) uncontroversial that welfare has moral value and provides moral reasons; but it is highly contested how in particular. We ought not to harm people, but do we also ought to benefit them? Does this include future people - even if their existence depends on our actions? And can we aggregate people's welfare, or should we limit the trade-offs between their harms and benefits? Our account of welfare has implications for ethics; but do ethical considerations also provide reasons to adopt one or another theory of welfare? What is the interaction between theories of welfare and the ethics of welfare? Some lives are better and some are worse; but what constitutes their prudential value? Are well-being and ill-being analogous or do they differ in structure and relevance - and what do particular theories imply? What are the relevant underlying concepts of desire, pleasure, friendship, or other objective goods on which welfare may depend? This workshop provides a forum for the discussion of those and related questions. It aims at rallying scholars of philosophy to expand our understanding in these issues, and we hope to promote the philosophical engagement with ethics, welfare, and how they interact. _Call for Papers_ We are inviting submissions for talks, which should be between 20 and 30 minutes in length. Januar.2025, 17.00 Uhr, Hörsaal I (Karl-Rahner-Platz 3):_ _The Ontology of Individual Particulars_ _Abstract_ Peter Strawson claimed that each object of our everyday experience is one qua individual particular. However, why would something be one (= single), if it is individual and also particular? I argue that individuality and particularity introduce two different ways of being one; individuality is descriptive, while particularity is indexical. And yet, each object is one! How can this be? I argue that Aristotle, too, had thought that an object is an individual particular (_tode ti - hekaston/ti_), but he argued that, additionally, the oneness of an individual particular requires metaphysical justification. Aristotle's solution is that an 'individual particular' is one because what's particular qualifies what's individual in the object (particularising it). I further suggest the alternative possibility of developing the converse of Aristotle's solution for oneness, namely, that an 'individual particular' is one because what's individual qualifies what's particular in the object (individualising it). I do so by leaning on the (anti-Aristotelian, anti-descriptivist) 'indexical metaphysics' of Michael Ayers. _Masterclass With Anna Marmodoro: 29. Januar.2025, 10.00 Uhr, Dekanatssitzungssaal (Karl-Rahner-Platz 3):_ _Augustine's De Ordine_ Augustine approaches the problem of evil in _De Ordine_, trying to show that God is not causally responsible for _all_ human actions -specifically, he is not responsible for evil ones. In her unpublished paper, Marmodoro argues that Augustine's intuition, as developed through his dialectical engagement with Licentius, is that _all _human actions are governed by determinism, but _not all_are governed by teleology. More abstractly, Augustine's idea is that efficient causation may be decoupled from teleological causation; this is the case when evil happens. In this masterclass, we explore Marmodoro's main ideas on _De Ordine_ and discuss her interpretation of the metaphysical commitments underlying Augustine's thought. However, these discussions have become so rich and entangled that now we can speak of a confusing "plurality of [scientific] pluralisms" (Wylie 2015). The overall goal of this workshop is to examine and clarify different ideas of scientific pluralism. While proponents of scientific pluralism argue that pluralism offers a range of epistemic benefits which are conducive to scientific progress (Chang, 2012, 2022), pluralism not only comes with benefits but also with costs (e.g., Lari and Mäki 2024). This raises the question of the conditions under which pluralism contributes to scientific progress and those under which it may impede it. In addition to its role in promoting progress, the relationship between pluralism and the social and institutional organisation of science is also a subject of growing debate. Given that science is significantly shaped by social values (Longino 1990), scientific pluralism is increasingly discussed in the context of social and epistemic diversity as a crucial element for objective and inclusive knowledge production. One of the primary subjects to be addressed is that of how diverse research groups can fruitfully collaborate in order to foster scientific progress, and what part institutions play in this process. The workshop investigates the complex relationship between scientific pluralism, epistemic diversity and scientific progress, both theoretically and through the examination of case studies. The overall goal is to discuss whether pluralism hinders or contributes to progress, and to explore the roles of institutional and social structures in this dynamic. A particular focus is put on the social sciences, with an emphasis on the fields of psychology and economics, but case studies from any other field of science are very welcome. _Workshop Themes and Questions:_ _1. This talk addresses two questions: In what ways can an explication problem have more than one solution? In what sense do multiple solutions to explication problems give rise to pluralism? Based on an analysis of the general structure of explications, I will first develop a systematic overview of the surprisingly many factors that can be responsible for multiple outcomes of an explication project. I will then suggest some conditions under which it is plausible to interpret multiple outcomes as giving rise to explication-based pluralism.

Call For Abstracts - PSA Around the world 2025

https://www.philsci.org/psa_around_the_world_2025.php In 2023, the Philosophy of Science Association launched a new initiative called PSA Around the World. The aim of the initiative is to reach out to the global community of philosophers of science and spotlight the rich diversity of practices and traditions in the field of philosophy of science via fully online conferences with a dedicated regional focus, running in the years when the Biennial Meeting of the PSA does not take place. The second PSA Around the World conference spotlights Eastern and Central Europe and is organized by the East European Network for Philosophy of Science (https://eenps.weebly.com/). The conference is open to all PSA members worldwide. Contributed papers may be on any topic in philosophy of science. Scholars working in Eastern and Central Europe are particularly encouraged to submit papers, and papers exploring the philosophy of science in Eastern and Central European contexts are most welcome. The PSA Around the World 2025 Committee is committed to assembling a program with high-quality papers on a variety of topics and diverse presenters that reflect the full range of current work in the philosophy of science. Given the time zones constraints, and with an eye to increasing diversity of topics, there is no call for symposia for this conference. The conference will run fully online for three days and different time slots to accommodate a global audience in various time zones: Thursday, November 6; Friday, November 14; Saturday, November 22 (precise timing for each day TBA). The conference fee is $50 and is able to be waived. Submissions should consist of a 1000-word abstract and be prepared for anonymous review with no information identifying the author in the body of the abstract. For co-authored papers, the presenting author should submit the abstract. Abstracts should be submitted using the SciencesConf link: http://psaatw25.sciencesconf.org. Users will need to register for a SciencesConf account before submitting an abstract. The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2025, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time. All presenters should be members of the Philosophy of Science Association, but if this represents an unreasonable burden, please reach out to director(a)philsci.org. The Program Committee expects to announce its decision on papers accepted for presentation by June 2025. Authors of accepted abstracts are encouraged to post full-length papers as PSA Around the World 2025 Conference Papers at philsci-archive.pitt.edu (a publicly accessible digital archive) prior to the meeting. Paper presentation at the conference should take no more than 15 minutes to allow 15 minutes for questions (in a 30-minute time slot per paper). In accordance with the current PSA policy no one is permitted to present more than once at each PSA meeting. A scholar may appear as co-author on more than one paper but may present only once at PSA Around the World 2025. General questions about contributed papers should be directed to the Co-Chair of the PSA AtW 2025 Program Committee, Tomáš Marvan, at marvan(a)flu.cas.cz. Call for Applications: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Brazil

Call for Applications (Please note: This opportunity is part of a research group in Brazil that Lucas Baccarat (research assistant at Institute Vienna Circles project Carnap in Context II: "Practical" Philosophy in the US) is affiliated with.) Postdoctoral fellowship at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) The post-doc researcher will be part of the Brazilian research team of the bilateral research project The crisis of philosophy in the 1930s, funded by SNSF (Switzerland) and FAPESP (São Paulo, Brazil) and led by Guillaume Fréchette (Geneva) and Mario Porta (São Paulo). The selected candidate will be integrated into the Research Group on the Origins of Contemporary Philosophy. The fellowship provides a monthly amount of R$ 12,000.00 (twelve thousand reais), with a planned duration of 42 months. It requires full-time dedication to the project with a workload of 40 hours per week. The starting date is April 2025 Activities to be performed by the Fellow: (i) writing and submission of individual and joint papers related to the general theme of the project; (ii) active participation in the activities of the Research Group on the Origins of Contemporary Philosophy, including weekly meetings; (iii) organization of conferences, workshops, and lectures in Brazil and abroad. Application: The candidate is required to submit, by February 13, 2025, a single PDF document via email to mariopor(a)pucsp.br. The document must include: (i) A project proposal of up to 4 pages (Times New Roman/Arial 11, 1.5 spacing) addressing the Identity Crisis of Philosophy in the 1930s in the following philosophical Traditions: Neokantianism, Logical Empiricism, Phenomenology and Hermeneutics (ii) a cover letter describing the candidates background and profile, as well as the alignment between the candidates interests and skills and the research project (maximum 800 words). (iii) an updated CV (Lattes Curriculum or Orcid for Brazilian candidates). (iv) two academic reference letters. (v) proof of completion of a Master's and Doctorate in Philosophy. Requirements: a) proven prior experience in group research projects; b) strong ability to work effectively in teams, contributing not only to individual activities but also to the management of administrative and bureaucratic matters; c) great command of the English language (proficiency in Portuguese is desirable), and d) reside in São Paulo during the fellowship. Evaluation: a) evaluation of prior academic work and the submitted research proposal; b) thematic alignment of the candidate's research with the central theme of the project, as well as with the historical-philosophical approach adopted by the Research Group on the Origins of Contemporary Philosophy; c) review of external references regarding group activity. The Research Group on the Origins of Contemporary Philosophy seeks to promote good academic practices regarding gender and socio-economic diversity. Female researchers are encouraged to apply for the position. After an initial review of the applications, a select group of candidates will be shortlisted for the interview round. Project description The identity crisis of philosophy is a large-scale phenomenon beginning in the 19th century and extending throughout the entire 20th century, following us even today: many of the questions that were raised in the 19th century are still relevant today: is there a place for philosophy in the development of science? What is the relationship between philosophy and science? To assess such a large-scale phenomenon and its effects on contemporary thought, we need to investigate first its main turning points. This project aims to provide a unified account of the identity crisis of philosophy in the 1930s by examining it through the lens of four philosophical traditions: Neo-Kantianism (Cassirer), logical empiricism (Carnap), phenomenology (Husserl) and hermeneutics (Heidegger).

EXPLICATION. THE EARLY CARNAP ON CONCEPTUAL ENGINEERING Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date:16/01/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G Abstract: This paper calls into question the thesis that early Carnap's rational reconstruction arises as a proto-version of his later and more mature idea of explication. The aim of the paper is to show that (1) according to the criteria of similarity, exactness, and fruitfulness, rational reconstruction qualifies as an explication, and that (2) according to their explanatory preconditions, rational reconstruction and explication emerge as processes of conceptual generalization and specification, respectively. To support (1), I consider rational reconstruction, in terms of early Carnap's quasi-analysis, as a representational theory of mathematical structures; to support (2), I rely on formal concept analysis as a common framework for comparing conceptual constructions.
