Würzburger Studierenden-Werkstatt für Philosophie Das Institut für Philosophie der Universität Würzburg lädt interessierte Philosophie-Studierende in fortgeschrittenen Semestern ein, ihre philosophischen Untersuchungen und Forschungen im Rahmen einer Studierenden-Werkstatt vorzustellen. Der Workshop bietet Studierenden der Philosophie die Möglichkeit, eigene Ideen vorzustellen, sich an einem philosophischen Fachvortrag zu versuchen und sich mit etablierten Forschenden im kollegialen Rahmen des Würzburger Instituts für Philosophie auszutauschen und zu vernetzen. Dies ermöglicht den Teilnehmenden, ausgiebige Rückmeldungen zu ihren Arbeiten von Würzburger Professor*innen und Mitarbeiter*innen zu erhalten und mit diesen in Dialog zu treten. Im Fokus steht die Einübung einer Praxis des gemeinsamen philosophischen Denkens. Many philosophers of this era characterize the preceding paradigm as mechanisticor materialist, in reference to the philosophical outlook, derived by science and presupposed by science, that suggests a specific view of the methods, aims, and standards of intelligibility in science and epistemology. Here, I will describe how this paradigm operates in the work of three representatives of philosophy in the twentieth century: Ernst Cassirer, Alfred North Whitehead, and Philipp Frank. These figures position themselves as overcoming mechanistic philosophy through an understanding of science as symbolic. I focus on how their broadly functionalist, semiotic views develop out of reflections on the methods of the physical sciences in the second half of the nineteenth century (particularly electromagnetic theory), and how this is taken up in their later work in considerations of the role of symbols in politics and culture more generally. All three, I argue, have a critical project in common, aimed at freedom from historically conditioned symbols. The primary tool they use in this project is narratives of the history of philosophy of science. In the case of Whitehead, my focus is primarily on two lecture series’, published respectively as Science and the Modern World in 1925, and Symbolism: its Meaning and Effect in 1927. My focus in Cassirer will be his application of symbolic forms to nationalism, and in the case of Frank, I will offer a reading of his symbolic view of science in service of a humanistic project “synthesizing” the sciences with other parts of human culture, without just latching onto evocative general terminology in the sciences (like matter, energy, etc.) to do so. This project moves to recognize the centrality of the concept of the symbol in twentieth century philosophy; its genesis, and its common place in the work of seemingly diverse philosophers, towards a different thematic emphasis in the history of analytic philosophy and the history of philosophy of science. 3pm: Christian Damböck (IVC): Fascism as Illogical Reasoning. Rudolf Carnap's Forgotten Approach In his now completely forgotten contribution to the Harvard Tercentenary Celebration in 1936, Rudolf Carnap outlines a theory of illogical reasoning that can be interpreted as a theory of fascist politics. While theories of fascism often see the loss of humanistic values as the primary problem, Carnap sees the values of humanism as natural components of the scientific world conception, so that anti-humanism and fascism can only arise as a consequence of the loss of the latter. According to Carnap, illogical thinking occurs in three forms: (a) political attitudes are disguised as facts or destiny, (b) inconsistent or logically misconstrued value systems are accepted, (c) insufficiently confirmed or empirically false premises are taken as a basis. Fascism arises from propaganda that spreads illogical thinking in society. I contextualize Carnap's 1936 approach to explain why it was not pursued further and why value-based theories of fascism continue to prevail today. On this basis, I also outline some consequences of a Carnapian understanding of fascism for contemporary politics.

Das Buch „Franz Roh 1890-1965“ setzt sich zum Ziel, den Vordenker und Vorkämpfer der Kulturmoderne auf wissenschaftlicher Grundlage nach intensivem Quellenstudium und Archivrecherchen vorzustellen. Keine Ausstellung, die sich mit der mitteleuropäischen Moderne der 1920 Jahre befasst, kommt heutzutage an Franz Roh als ihrem Begleiter und Vordenker vorbei. Bisher existiert aber keine zusammenhängende wissenschaftliche Erforschung seines Lebens und Werkes. Diese Lücke will dieser Band schließen. This workshop aims to create an interdisciplinary scientific discussion in which the various facets of diagnosis form the leading motif. We invite social scientists, especially anthropologists and sociologists focusing on field research and critical discourse analysis, and philosophers, examining the foundations of psychiatric diagnosis with ethical and epistemological normative frameworks. A particularly relevant philosophical framework presents itself in the theory of hermeneutical injustice. This approach analyzes harm stemming from deficient interpretive resources, a category arguably applicable to psychiatric diagnosis. This closely relates to the fact that diagnosis can also be a process in which new empirical and identity qualities are conceptualized. The process is embedded in institutional, economic, and social conditions, the influence of which has a direct impact on an individual's experiences. Diagnosis is also a practice that actively shapes expert and non-expert discourses, and also creates a field for their mutual interaction. It provides an opportunity for new interpretations of oneself in expert discourse through the non-expert practice of self-diagnosis. Liebe Kolleg*innen! ich freue mich sehr, euch mitteilen zu können, dass dank der Unterstützung verschiedener Forschungsinstitute der Universität Wien ein interdisziplinäres Symposium zum Thema "Psychoanalyse-Recht-Religion. Seine Forschungsarbeit zeichnet sich insbesondere durch einen trans- und interdisziplinären Ansatz aus, der unterschiedliche Wissensgebiete miteinander in Verbindung bringt. Dazu zählen die Psychoanalyse, die Rechtsgeschichte und die Theologie bzw. Religionsgeschichte. Die Berücksichtigung dieser Spannungsfelder, in denen Legendre zufolge das Wissen über die Reproduktion der sprechenden Gattung Mensch aufbewahrt wird, führte ihn zu einer erneuerten Fokussierung der politisch- und sozialphilosophisch bedeutsamen Frage nach dem Verhältnis von menschlicher Existenz und Institution: Ist das Institutionelle für die menschliche Existenz etwas Äußerliches oder ist es ihr ein wesentlich zugehöriges Phänomen, ohne das sie selbst nicht sein könnte? Welcher Bedeutung kommt in dieser Hinsicht Legendres Begriff der „dogmatische Anthropologie“ zu? Diese Frage gewinnt in der heutigen Zeit zunehmend an Bedeutung, in der, wie Roberto Esposito treffend formuliert, konservative Institutionen und anti-institutionelle Praktiken jede politische Dialektik der Erneuerung zu verhindern scheinen. Obwohl die Relevanz seines Denkens für unsere Gegenwart mittlerweile als unbestritten gilt, befindet sich die Rezeption von Legends Werk im deutschsprachigen Raum noch im Anfangsstadium. Um die Erforschung des Werkes von Legendre weiter voranzutreiben und auch Kolleginnen und Kollegen auf sein Denken aufmerksam zu machen, orientiert sich das Symposium an folgenden leitenden Fragen: Was sind die theoretischen und ideengeschichtlichen Hintergründe seines Denkens? Wie und was ist unter dem Begriff der „dogmatischen Anthropologie“ zu verstehen und inwiefern kommt ihm eine herausragende Bedeutung zu, über das Verhältnis von Indivduum und Institution Auskunft zu geben? Die Bewerber*innen müssen einen Master-Abschluss (oder einen gleichwertigen Abschluss) nachweisen und bis spätestens 1. Oktober 2025 an einer Universität als Doktorand*innen immatrikuliert sein. Es gibt keine Altersgrenze. Das Fellowship beginnt am 1. Oktober 2025 und endet am 30. Juni 2026. Scholars are increasingly examining Aristotle's logical works--especially the _Posterior Analytics_--to reassess his methodological tools and strategies. This trend has led to a reevaluation of foundational concepts related to Aristotle's so-called method of _endoxa_, his dialectical approach, and his handling of facts, opinions, and appearances across both his practical and theoretical texts. The group will focus on the penultimate manuscript of Relational Beings: Kin Matters in the Fragile Sciences, a forthcoming monograph by project lead Professor Rob Wilson that Oxford University Press will publish late in 2025. Our discussions will inform final, post-review changes to the manuscript. The reading group will run weekly in a hybrid format, commencing on Thursday, December 12th with a break of three weeks for Christmas. Relational Beings: Kin Matters in the Fragile Sciences addresses general issues about reductionism, ethnocentrism, the relationships between the cognitive, biological, and social sciences?within the philosophy of anthropology, especially in the study of kinship. The book integrates insights from various disciplines often siloed in discussions of kinship and sociality. The central thread running through the three parts of the book--on relations, on incest and its avoidance, and on kinship--is that we best understand ourselves as relational beings by recognising biological and cognitive dimensions to kinship and our sociality. This runs counter to much recent work within cultural anthropology on kin and kinship. New Reading Circle on Philosophy of Sex and Sexuality

Dear All, *We are organizing a reading circle based on the topic “Philosophy of Sex and Sexuality”!* To start a conversation about /sex/, we need to be clear what is the scope of the phenomenon we are talking about. For that we need to start with /sexual desire/, which is closely linked to /sexual motivation, arousal, and activity/. That is already closely connected to issues within /politics of sex, sexual orientation, and sexual identity/. When we engage in sexual acts, we are living out our /sexual orientation/. Beyond our orientation, understanding our /sexual identity/ is equally important as part of our personal identity. On top of that, the cultural theory of queer sexual identity plays a crucial role in shaping how we understand and express ourselves in various contexts. An interesting aspect to discuss is /normativity and permissibility of sexual acts/ under the consideration of sexual orientation and non-heteronomous identities. When discussing /good or bad sex/, we usually assume that consent was given to start the encounter. Without consent, the focus shifts to the permissibility of the act itself, with the prevailing view being that consent is morally transformative from impermissible to permissible. Is having the right mental state enough, or can it be implied through certaincommunications? Additionally, to which acts are we consenting? Within the scope of the named phenomenon /objectification/ is a concept, which can be viewed from different angles. The concept of /mutual objectification/ refers to the notion when both partners may objectify each other, which may be seen as problematic because it reduces a person’s humanity to their body. On the other hand, objectification can also be viewed from a /social perspective/, as feminist philosophers argue. For instance, they claim that pornography negatively portrays women’s sexuality, reinforcing harmful stereotypes. In contrast to that, Thomas Nagel offers a different view on objectification as a complex, multi-leveled awareness between two people, where both are mutually aware of each other's desire. *If that sounds interesting to you, don’t hesitate to send me an email – I’d love to hear from you! All are welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Matteo Collodel (IVC Fellow) CRITICISM, MISREPRESENTATION, AND DECLINE: FEYERABEND AND LOGICAL EMPIRICISM Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 21/11/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G ABSTRACT: Feyerabend became familiar with the Vienna Circle tradition and Logical Empiricism in his formative years in post-war Vienna. However, since his early intellectual trajectory, he made LE one of his favorite critical targets, articulating his criticism in personal dialogue with some of its most distinguished representatives. This paper focuses on the second stage of Feyerabend's sustained assault against LE, examining both Feyerabend's reception of LE and Hempel's response to Feyerabend's challenge. In a series of papers published between 1962 and 1966, Feyerabend relentlessly questioned the descriptive adequacy and the normative desirability of the 'orthodox', logical empiricist, accounts of reduction and explanation advanced by Hempel and Nagel. Feyerabend's persistent criticism shook North American philosophy of science and prompted Hempel's reaction, which appeared in print in the second half of the 1960s. Initially, Hempel retorted that Feyerabend's methodological analysis was 'completely mistaken' and Feyerabend could offer 'no support' for his allegations. This raises interesting historiographical questions about the later reception of LE as it seems that Feyerabend, driven by his anti-authoritarian stance, substantially misinterpreted the logical empiricist research programme, his vantage point notwithstanding. On the other hand, Hempel also recognised that the descriptive issues on which Feyerabend insisted, despite having been long acknowledged by LE, could have more far-reaching consequences than previously envisaged. In fact, by the end of the 1960s, Hempel came to make quite radical concessions, admitting that the standard logical empiricist model for explicating the structure of scientific theories was essentially 'misleading', that the logical empiricist account of reduction was 'an untenable oversimplification', and that the logical empiricist approach as to the meaning of scientific terms was actually 'misconceived'. In this respect, there are good reasons to consider the decline of the logical empiricist research programme in the 1970s at least partly as the result of Feyerabend's stimulating, however misrepresenting, insights.
