----------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS (Salzburg, deadline: May 1, 2025)
Salzburg Conference for Young Analytic Philosophy: SOPhiA 2025
September 03 – 05, 2025
Department of Philosophy (Humanities), University of Salzburg, Austria
Mode: in-person conference
Aim:
SOPhiA 2025 provides an opportunity for students and doctoral
candidates in philosophy to take a first peek into the philosophical
business and to get in touch with prospective and well established
philosophers. Contributions in every discipline of philosophy
(epistemology, ethics, logic, metaphysics, philosophy of mind,
philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, etc.) are welcome. As
common in analytic philosophy, contributors should make use of
understandable language as well as rational argumentation. In addition
to the conference presentations there will also be affiliated workshops
on selected topics in analytic philosophy.
Keynote Speakers:
* Ophelia Deroy (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich)
* Stavros Ioannidis [in person] & Stathis Psillos [online] (National
and Kapodistrian University of Athens)
* David Lanius (University of Salzburg)
Call for papers:
Students and doctoral candidates (pre-doc) in philosophy are encouraged
to submit an abstract prepared for double-blind review. We are committed
to fostering diversity and equality in our programs. Submissions from
underrepresented groups are particularly welcome. Abstracts should not
exceed 2.000 _characters_.
All submissions should be suitable for a presentation of approximately
20 minutes in length (plus 10 minutes discussion). The conference
language is English. Please submit your abstract at
<http://www.sophia-conference.org [1]> until May 1, 2025. Note that
authors may appear as co-authors on multiple submissions, but not more
often than once as first author/presenter. Attendees who do not wish to
present are asked to register in advance by emailing to
<organization(a)sophia-conference.org>.
SOPhiA best paper award:
Contributors are also invited to submit a full paper (of up to 8.000
words) not including any author or affiliation information. A jury will
evaluate all submissions and will determine the winning paper. A
selection of full papers will, in addition, undergo double-blind
peer-review and be considered for publication in KRITERION – Journal
of Philosophy free of article processing charges. Please prepare your
full paper according to the guidelines available at
<http://degruyter.com/krt> and submit it via the link provided there.
When submitting your manuscript via the journal’s submission system,
please select „Special Issue: SOPhiA Best paper Award“ as the issue
type. Note that only full papers in English submitted before the general
deadline (May 1, 2025) can be considered for the SOPhiA best paper award
and that contributors are not allowed to be first or co-author of more
than one paper submitted for the SOPhiA best paper award. Please be
aware that only contributions that have also been submitted as a regular
SOPhiA talk will be considered for the SOPhiA best paper award.
Submission deadline: May 1, 2025
Notification deadline: June 1, 2025

Dear VDP Members,
This is to inform you that information about funding for events, grants
and scholarships for the year 2025 is not available on Moodle.
The Rectorate has increased our budget for this year. The budget for
doctoral schools is calculated on the basis of the performance of the
school, i.e. the number of graduates, the timely passing of the FÖP, the
submission of the dissertation agreement, and the annual reports.
One of the factors for this increase is the overall good performance for
which you are responsible. On behalf of our Directors and Steering
Committee, I would like to thank you for this.
My special thanks go to each of the doctoral candidates who put a lot of
effort into organizing these events and to our new SSC student
assistant, Isabel Seelmann, who has worked very diligently and
contributed with fresh ideas and work to make the FÖP a more comfortable
space.
I would also take this opportunity to remind you to be on time with the
compulsory milestones of your doctorate, if they are not on time, see:
https://vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/phd-program/compulsory-activities/
Importantly, the budget increase will be reflected in the number of
activities and calls the school government is planning for this year and
in the calls you will receive in the next days/weeks, such as the
Writing Retreat, which is listed in the document.
I wish you a good end of the semester, and thank you very much for
participating so actively in the FÖP, which has had record attendance
this semester, and in the pragmatic academic events and writing evenings.
Stay tuned,
Raphael Aybar

(1) CALL FOR PAPERS (Tübingen, Deadline: 10.02.2025)
Suffering and Attention. A student conference and a workshop
Tübingen, 15-17 April 2025
Organised by Silvia Caprioglio Panizza and Eva-Maria Düringer
Funded by the DFG Research Grant Natural Badness: Suffering and Its
Place in Contemporary Virtue Ethics
We welcome abstract submissions for the student conference on 'Suffering
and Attention' which will take place at the University of Tübingen on 15
April 2025. Students at all stages, from BA and MA to PhD, are very
welcome to apply. Come and share your ideas in an inclusive,
constructive, and non-adversarial environment!
The conference will be followed by a workshop with invited speakers on
16 and 17 April 2025 (see below).
Description:
Suffering has always been topical. Where there is life, there is the
capacity to suffer. The contemporary world is plagued by increasing
wars, migration crises, and political extremism. Billions of animals
suffer and die every day due to human consumption and climate change.
Global mental health has been worsening for decades. But what precisely
is suffering? It is more than pain, and it is more than things going
badly. But what? And what, if anything, should we do about it?
The nature of suffering has recently become a topic of lively debate in
analytic philosophy. In Suffering and Virtue (2018), Michael Brady
thinks of suffering as 'displeasures that we mind', while the volume The
Philosophy of Suffering (2020), co-edited by Brady, David Bain and
Jennifer Corns, collects a wide array of different views: suffering is
conceived e.g. as negatively construing one's situation, as a severe
mental disruption, or as an emotion directed at pain. Different as these
views are, they all agree that suffering is essentially experiential.
But not even this seems to be a given. Corns (2022) has recently argued
that suffering is significantly disrupted agency, hence not essentially
marked by any experience at all - a view shared by some virtue ethical
stances on suffering who take suffering to consist in prevention of
flourishing, experienced or not.
The account of suffering we accept has a bearing on the way we will
answer the ethical questions that suffering gives rise to: How do we
engage with suffering, in ourselves and others? Do we have a duty always
to alleviate or minimise it? Should we ever welcome it? Is it acceptable
to look away, or do we have a responsibility to pay attention to it? And
how do we attend to it without being crushed?
The aim of this conference is to raise questions about the nature and
ethics of suffering by putting in conversation contemporary analytic
approaches with historical, continental, and non-Western traditions, and
by broadening the scope to include reflections on the suffering of both
human and non-human animals, environmental perspectives, and questions
of suffering in the philosophy of medicine and mental health.
*
Students with an interest in the topic should feel encouraged to apply,
even if their work does not fit neatly into any of the approaches
outlined. Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to:
- What is the nature of suffering?
- Is suffering ever to be welcomed?
- Simone Weil, attention and affliction
- Suffering and attention in Buddhist philosophy
- What does it mean to attend to suffering? Is it possible,
and ought we to do it?
- What kinds of moral responsibility, if any, does suffering
give rise to?
- How does suffering in oneself compare to our perception and
response to suffering in others?
- What is the proper way to respond to suffering?
- How do different philosophical traditions understand
suffering, and what are their main contributions and weaknesses?
Students are invited to submit a 200 word abstract (approximately),
suitable for a 15-20 minute talk followed by a short Q&A, to
silvia.caprioglio-panizza(a)uni-tuebingen.de by 10 February 2025.
Decisions will be sent within two weeks of that date. If you have any
queries, please do not hesitate to contact us at the email address
above.
*
Participants at the conference are welcome, but not required to, attend
the workshop after the conference. The workshop speakers are: Elisa
Aaltola (University of Turku), Michael Brady (University of Glasgow),
Silvia Caprioglio Panizza (University of Tübingen), Dorothea Debus
(University of Konstanz), Eva-Maria Düringer (University of Tübingen),
Ian James Kidd (University of Nottingham), Kamila Pacovská (University
of Pardubice), Christopher Thomas (Manchester Metropolitan University),
Mariëtte Willemsen (Amsterdam University College)
Please note that the conference/workshop and refreshments are free for
everyone, but unfortunately we are unable to offer travel bursaries for
accepted participants.

(2) CALL FOR PAPERS (Berlin, Deadline: 03.03.2025)
weiterleiten würden bzw. in Ihren Seminaren darauf aufmerksam machen.
Kontaktmöglichkeiten finden Sie in unserem Linktree:

Saarland University, Germany
_Keynote speakers_
Chris Heathwood (University of Colorado, Boulder)
Hilary Greaves (Oxford University)
_Information on the workshop_
Considerations about the nature of welfare, the value of welfare, its
distribution, or welfare-based claims and complaints are central to
moral philosophy. They are of particular concern for all philosophers
who take welfare to be (at least) one source for normative reasons.
Evaluative and deontic considerations about welfare provide an array of
fascinating philosophical questions.
It is (quite) uncontroversial that welfare has moral value and provides
moral reasons; but it is highly contested how in particular. We ought
not to harm people, but do we also ought to benefit them? Does this
include future people - even if their existence depends on our actions?
And can we aggregate people's welfare, or should we limit the trade-offs
between their harms and benefits?
Our account of welfare has implications for ethics; but do ethical
considerations also provide reasons to adopt one or another theory of
welfare? What is the interaction between theories of welfare and the
ethics of welfare?
Some lives are better and some are worse; but what constitutes their
prudential value? Are well-being and ill-being analogous or do they
differ in structure and relevance - and what do particular theories
imply? What are the relevant underlying concepts of desire, pleasure,
friendship, or other objective goods on which welfare may depend?
This workshop provides a forum for the discussion of those and related
questions. It aims at rallying scholars of philosophy to expand our
understanding in these issues, and we hope to promote the philosophical
engagement with ethics, welfare, and how they interact.
_Call for Papers_
We are inviting submissions for talks, which should be between 20 and 30
minutes in length. We are particularly interested in current or future
research projects, and especially welcome submissions from philosophers

(4) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Innsbruck, 29.01.2025)
Aquinas Lecture 2025 und Masterclass mit Anna Marmodoro (Saint
Louis/Oxford)
_Aquinas Lecture 2025: 29. Januar.2025, 17.00 Uhr, Hörsaal I
(Karl-Rahner-Platz 3):_
_The Ontology of Individual Particulars_
_Abstract_
Peter Strawson claimed that each object of our everyday experience is
one qua individual particular. However, why would something be one (=
single), if it is individual and also particular? I argue that
individuality and particularity introduce two different ways of being
one; individuality is descriptive, while particularity is indexical. And
yet, each object is one! How can this be? I argue that Aristotle, too,
had thought that an object is an individual particular (_tode ti -
hekaston/ti_), but he argued that, additionally, the oneness of an
individual particular requires metaphysical justification. Aristotle's
solution is that an 'individual particular' is one because what's
particular qualifies what's individual in the object (particularising
it). I further suggest the alternative possibility of developing the
converse of Aristotle's solution for oneness, namely, that an
'individual particular' is one because what's individual qualifies
what's particular in the object (individualising it). I do so by leaning
on the (anti-Aristotelian, anti-descriptivist) 'indexical metaphysics'
of Michael Ayers.
_Masterclass With Anna Marmodoro: 29. Januar.2025, 10.00 Uhr,
Dekanatssitzungssaal (Karl-Rahner-Platz 3):_
_Augustine's De Ordine_
Augustine approaches the problem of evil in _De Ordine_, trying to show
that God is not causally responsible for _all_ human actions
-specifically, he is not responsible for evil ones. In her unpublished
paper, Marmodoro argues that Augustine's intuition, as developed through
his dialectical engagement with Licentius, is that _all _human actions
are governed by determinism, but _not all_are governed by teleology.
More abstractly, Augustine's idea is that efficient causation may be
decoupled from teleological causation; this is the case when evil
happens. In this masterclass, we explore Marmodoro's main ideas on _De
Ordine_ and discuss her interpretation of the metaphysical commitments
underlying Augustine's thought.

Deadline: 07.02.2025)
Workshop on Scientific Pluralism, Epistemic Diversity, and Progress in
Science
_Registration Deadline: 07.02.2025_
_Workshop Date: _27. - 28.03.2025
_Location: _University of Wuppertal
Glanzstoffhaus, 6th Floor
Kasinostraße 19-21
42103 Wuppertal
We invite researchers, students, and professionals from all scientific
disciplines to participate. Please register by sending an e-mail to
pluralism.workshop(a)uni-wuppertal.de by _07.02.2025_.
_About the Workshop_
The idea that science should converge on a single, ultimate truth has
become contested as the dominant view in the academic world; scientific
pluralism has gained wide acceptance. However, these discussions have
become so rich and entangled that now we can speak of a confusing
"plurality of [scientific] pluralisms" (Wylie 2015). The overall goal of
this workshop is to examine and clarify different ideas of scientific
pluralism.
While proponents of scientific pluralism argue that pluralism offers a
range of epistemic benefits which are conducive to scientific progress
(Chang, 2012, 2022), pluralism not only comes with benefits but also
with costs (e.g., Lari and Mäki 2024). This raises the question of the
conditions under which pluralism contributes to scientific progress and
those under which it may impede it. In addition to its role in promoting
progress, the relationship between pluralism and the social and
institutional organisation of science is also a subject of growing
debate. Given that science is significantly shaped by social values
(Longino 1990), scientific pluralism is increasingly discussed in the
context of social and epistemic diversity as a crucial element for
objective and inclusive knowledge production. One of the primary
subjects to be addressed is that of how diverse research groups can
fruitfully collaborate in order to foster scientific progress, and what
part institutions play in this process.
The workshop investigates the complex relationship between scientific
pluralism, epistemic diversity and scientific progress, both
theoretically and through the examination of case studies. The overall
goal is to discuss whether pluralism hinders or contributes to progress,
and to explore the roles of institutional and social structures in this
dynamic. A particular focus is put on the social sciences, with an
emphasis on the fields of psychology and economics, but case studies
from any other field of science are very welcome.
_Workshop Themes and Questions:_
_1. Pluralism and Scientific Progress:_
* Under what specific conditions does pluralism contribute to scientific
progress, and in what contexts might it impede progress?
* How do different forms of pluralism (such as methodological,
theoretical, and epistemic) affect the course of scientific progress
across various disciplines?
* What kind of progress are we talking about in relation to scientific
pluralism?
_2. Epistemic Diversity:_
* What is the link between epistemic and social diversity and (value)
pluralism?
* How does epistemic diversity within research teams and scientific
communities influence the generation of knowledge?
* What are the benefits and challenges of fostering epistemic diversity
in scientific research, particularly in the social sciences?
_3. __Social Organization and Institutional Structures:_
* What roles do social organization and institutional structures play in
fostering or hindering pluralism and epistemic diversity in scientific
research?
* What institutional measures can be implemented to overcome barriers
and promote a more inclusive and cooperative scientific environment?
_4. Case Studies:_
* Which scientific fields, e.g. in the social sciences, are particularly
interesting for investigating the relationship between pluralism,
epistemic diversity, and progress? What lessons can be learned from
historical and current examples of pluralistic approaches in the various
scientific fields?
* What lessons can be learned from historical and current examples where
plurality seems to be lacking?
_Organizing Committee:_
* Jeremias Düring, University of Wuppertal
* Anastasiia Lazutkina, University of Wuppertal
* Charlotte Constanze Poller, University of Wuppertal
_Keynote Speakers:_
* Paul Hoyningen-Huene
* Inkeri Koskinen

Dear all,
our next speaker in the Philosophy of Science Colloquium organized by
the Institute Vienna Circle is Georg Brun (IVC Fellow), who will give a
talk on January 23, 4.45-6.15 pm.
All are welcome!

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Georg Brun (IVC Fellow)
EXPLICATION BASED PLURALISM
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 23/01/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
2G
Abstract:
Carnap emphasized that for a given explicandum, there is no such thing
as the correct explicatum, but only one or more adequate explicata. This
talk addresses two questions: In what ways can an explication problem
have more than one solution? In what sense do multiple solutions to
explication problems give rise to pluralism? Based on an analysis of the
general structure of explications, I will first develop a systematic
overview of the surprisingly many factors that can be responsible for
multiple outcomes of an explication project. I will then suggest some
conditions under which it is plausible to interpret multiple outcomes as
giving rise to explication-based pluralism.

Dear all,
You are cordially invited to our last pragmatic academic event of the
WS24 on
Teaching in Philosophy & External Teaching Applications
Date: 17.01.25 - 11:30-13:00 - Room 3A
Speakers: Michael Staudigl and Donata Romizi
Moderator: Mira Magdalena Sickinger
If you're planning to apply for external teaching positions, or if you'd
like to brush up on your teaching skills in philosophy, this workshop is
for you! Led by Donata Romizi and Michael Staudigl, it will first focus
on the structure of applications for external teaching positions, the
expectations of decision-making committees, and clues for writing a good
application. The second part will focus on teaching preparation.
Speakers will share their views on how to teach philosophy in a way that
promotes reading, writing and critical thinking skills to undergraduate

In 2023, the Philosophy of Science Association launched a new initiative
called PSA Around the World. The aim of the initiative is to reach out
to the global community of philosophers of science and spotlight the
rich diversity of practices and traditions in the field of philosophy of
science via fully online conferences with a dedicated regional focus,
running in the years when the Biennial Meeting of the PSA does not take
place.
The second PSA Around the World conference spotlights Eastern and
Central Europe and is organized by the East European Network for
Philosophy of Science (https://eenps.weebly.com/).
The conference is open to all PSA members worldwide. Contributed papers
may be on any topic in philosophy of science. Scholars working in
Eastern and Central Europe are particularly encouraged to submit papers,
and papers exploring the philosophy of science in Eastern and Central
European contexts are most welcome.
The PSA Around the World 2025 Committee is committed to assembling a
program with high-quality papers on a variety of topics and diverse
presenters that reflect the full range of current work in the philosophy
of science. Given the time zones constraints, and with an eye to
increasing diversity of topics, there is no call for symposia for this
conference.
The conference will run fully online for three days and different time
slots to accommodate a global audience in various time zones: Thursday,
November 6; Friday, November 14; Saturday, November 22 (precise timing
for each day TBA). The conference fee is $50 and is able to be waived.
Submissions should consist of a 1000-word abstract and be prepared for
anonymous review with no information identifying the author in the body
of the abstract. For co-authored papers, the presenting author should
submit the abstract. Abstracts should be submitted using the
SciencesConf link: http://psaatw25.sciencesconf.org. Users will need to
register for a SciencesConf account before submitting an abstract. The
deadline for submissions is March 31, 2025, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard
Time. All presenters should be members of the Philosophy of Science
Association, but if this represents an unreasonable burden, please reach
out to director(a)philsci.org.
The Program Committee expects to announce its decision on papers
accepted for presentation by June 2025. Authors of accepted abstracts
are encouraged to post full-length papers as PSA Around the World 2025
Conference Papers at philsci-archive.pitt.edu (a publicly accessible
digital archive) prior to the meeting. Paper presentation at the
conference should take no more than 15 minutes to allow 15 minutes for
questions (in a 30-minute time slot per paper). In accordance with the
current PSA policy no one is permitted to present more than once at each
PSA meeting. A scholar may appear as co-author on more than one paper
but may present only once at PSA Around the World 2025.
General questions about contributed papers should be directed to the
Co-Chair of the PSA AtW 2025 Program Committee, Tomáš Marvan, at
marvan(a)flu.cas.cz. To maintain anonymity in the review process,
questions about specific submissions should be sent to
office(a)philsci.org, as this address will be monitored by someone not
involved in the review process.

Project description
The identity crisis of philosophy is a large-scale phenomenon beginning in
the 19th century and extending throughout the entire 20th century, following
us even today: many of the questions that were raised in the 19th century
are still relevant today: is there a place for philosophy in the development
of science? What is the relationship between philosophy and science? To
assess such a large-scale phenomenon and its effects on contemporary
thought, we need to investigate first its main turning points. This project
aims to provide a unified account of the identity crisis of philosophy in
the 1930s by examining it through the lens of four philosophical traditions:
Neo-Kantianism (Cassirer), logical empiricism (Carnap), phenomenology
(Husserl) and hermeneutics (Heidegger).

QUASI-ANALYSIS VS. EXPLICATION. THE EARLY CARNAP ON CONCEPTUAL
ENGINEERING
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows. Date:16/01/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
2G
Abstract:
This paper calls into question the thesis that early Carnap's rational
reconstruction arises as a proto-version of his later and more mature
idea of explication. The aim of the paper is to show that (1) according
to the criteria of similarity, exactness, and fruitfulness, rational
reconstruction qualifies as an explication, and that (2) according to
their explanatory preconditions, rational reconstruction and explication
emerge as processes of conceptual generalization and specification,
respectively. To support (1), I consider rational reconstruction, in
terms of early Carnap's quasi-analysis, as a representational theory of
mathematical structures; to support (2), I rely on formal concept
analysis as a common framework for comparing conceptual constructions.

(1) CALL FOR PAPERS (Salzburg, Deadline: 28.02.2025)
Dignity in the Digital Age
June 17 to 18, 2024 (lunch to lunch)
University of Salzburg
Organizers: Gottfried Schweiger (Salzburg) and Michael Zichy (Bonn)
Invited speakers: Marcel Becker and Adrienne de Ruiter
In an era where digitalization permeates every aspect of our lives, the
concept of dignity is being redefined and challenged in unprecedented
ways. This conference and book volume seek to explore the multifaceted
relationship between digitalization and dignity, addressing the
challenges that technological advancements pose, for example, to our
fundamental rights, privacy, and sense of self-worth. We invite scholars
from various philosophical backgrounds and disciplines to contribute to
this critical discourse.Issues of control, safety, respect, and justice
in online spaces demand urgent attention, calling for a reevaluation of
existing ethical frameworks and political philosophies. The opacity of
complex algorithms, often referred to as the "black box" problem, poses
significant challenges to explainability and transparency, making it
difficult for users to understand how decisions affecting them are made.
This also calls to address the need for robust regulation and policies
to mitigate the adverse effects of digitalization on society.
Discussions on digital literacy are also encouraged, as empowering
individuals with the knowledge to navigate digital spaces is essential
for protecting their dignity and rights. Contributions that offer
insights into the ethical considerations and propose solutions for
enhancing fairness and reducing discrimination - for example with
respect to vulnerable and marginalized groups - in digital systems are
highly valued.
This call for papers seeks to foster a philosophical dialogue that not
only critiques the current state of digital technologies but also
envisions a future where dignity is upheld in the face of rapid
technological advancement. Papers will be featured in a book volume
dedicated to this theme.
We invite abstracts of 500 words (in Word format) and a brief CV. Travel
and accommodation expenses up to 500EUR can be covered. Please send your
abstract before February 28 to the organizers @ this email address:
gottfried.schweiger(a)plus.ac.at

(2) CALL FOR PAPERS (Duisburg/Essen, Deadline: 28.02.2025)
Online Conference "The Language of Psychotherapy: An Interdisciplinary
Perspective"
The research project "The Therapeutic Game" (PI Stefan Rinner) funded by
the Fritz Thyssen Foundation and based at the Department of Philosophy
at the University of Duisburg-Essen is organising an interdisciplinary
two-day online conference on questions regarding language and its use in
psychotherapeutic settings, to be held via Zoom on May 15 and 16. Our
goal is to bring together researchers interested in this topic from
different fields, including philosophy, linguistics, psychology,
psychiatry, communication studies, and sociology. We invite submissions
of abstracts for presentations by researchers from all career stages,
including graduate students. Topics may include, but are not limited to,
the following:
- features and functions of therapeutic speech and conversations
- linguistic models and explanations of the various functions and
effects of therapeutic speech
- application of tools or models developed in other areas of research to
therapeutic speech
- similarities between therapeutic speech and other socially relevant
kinds of speech (e.g., hate speech and political speech)
The submitted abstracts should be 500 words and indicate the intended
kind of presentation:
(i) Regular: 20 min presentation, 10 min discussion
(ii) Exploratory: 5 min presentation, 10 min discussion
Please send your abstract as a .pdf file to stefan.rinner(a)uni-due.de.
The deadline for submission is February 28 2025. The conference language
will be English.
All abstracts will be reviewed by the members of the research project
and selections made on the basis of judgments of quality and fit with
the workshop topic and aims. Decisions will be communicated by the end
of March 2025.

(4) CALL FOR PAPERS (Special Issue, Deadline: 01.11.2025)
Inquiry: Insights through Metaphors
Journal: _Inquiry: An interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy_
Guest Editors:
Jochen Briesen (Heidelberg University)
Jacob Hesse (Ruhr-University Bochum)
Description:
This special issue is based on a conference that was held in June 2024
at the University of Konstanz. Traditionally, discussions of metaphor
tend to emphasize either its aesthetic aspect, often at the expense of
its epistemic value, or vice versa. Our hypothesis, however, is that the
aesthetic dimension of metaphors can actively contribute to and enhance
their epistemic significance. We think that this investigation naturally
leads to questions about the relationship between metaphors and images.
For instance, to what extent do metaphors possess pictorial qualities?
Some scholars have even suggested the existence of genuine visual
metaphors. In this context, it is worth exploring the distinct
properties metaphors acquire when realized visually. Further questions
are: Can the epistemic value of metaphors be clarified by drawing upon
the epistemic value of images? How do the aesthetic and epistemic
aspects of images and metaphors relate to each other? What epistemic
value can art and aesthetic objects in general hold? Is there a unique
epistemic value inherent in metaphors themselves? Which value can
metaphors and analogies have for science and (scientific) understanding
in general?
We invite contributions that explore these and other related questions
from the perspectives of philosophy of language, linguistics,
epistemology, philosophy of science, aesthetics, art history, or
cultural studies.
The deadline for submissions is November 1st, 2025.
Submissions should be made through the journal's online system. When
submitting, please be sure to select our special issue from the dropdown
menu provided. If this step is missed, the manuscript will be processed
as a regular submission.

Leitung: Laura Martena / Dominik Balg
In

Date: 17.01.25 - 11:30-13:00 – 3A, NiG.
Speakers will share their views on how to teach philosophy in a way that
promotes reading, writing and critical thinking skills to undergraduate
students, managing their expectations, presenting philosophical ideas,
motivating class discussions, assigning homework, and giving feedback.
Thank you for reading this message and we hope to see you at some of
these events,
Raphael Aybar

Dear All,
The "Wittgen=steine" group organises a talk tomorrow:
October 18th, 2024, 3:00pm to 4:30pm, HS 3B:
Anne-Marie Søndergaard Christensen, "Wittgenstein and the difficulty of
avoiding failures of decency"
Abstract:
Taking my lead from Wittgenstein, I will investigate the difficulties
involved in acknowledging one's lack of decency and moral failures.
After a short reflection on my use of the word 'decency', I will work to
show that a vital reason why we have a tendency to avoid acknowledging
our moral failures is that they bring into question our personal moral
standing or moral position, and this will lead to an exploration of the
idea of the personal dimension of ethics, touched upon by Wittgenstein
in several remarks published in _Culture and Value_. The difficulties
involved in acknowledging failure will also be illuminated through
Hannah Arendt's interpretation of the Socratic slogan that it is worse
to do what is unjust than to suffer it. Finally, I will look at
different ways in which we may work to avoid acknowledgement of failure,
through revision of our moral position or by using ordinary
psychological measures of repression or forms of evasion such as
aggressiveness, confabulation or deferral. I finally discuss how
deferral is often a component in attempts to deflect our current failure
to act appropriately in the light of climate change.
Everybody welcome!
Best wishes from the organizers,
Esther Heinrich

Summer School
Call for Applications
(Deadline: February 15, 2025)
23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC)
The History and Epistemology of Econometrics
Vienna, July 7-11, 2025
https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/
Course Description
Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role
in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and
financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute
to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support
the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia
focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the
statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the
epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative
challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of
its results in policy decisions and evaluation.
The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers
of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy
institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues.
The course is also structured around a particular point of
view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the
main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in
science.
Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include:
* History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be
discussed in the course
* The Vienna Circle and econometrics
* Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research
* Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how
they relate to each other
* Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic
variables from a modeling point of view
* Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness
* The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to
map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables?
* Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the
proper interpretation of results obtained through search
* Different approaches to the nature of causation and different
strategies of causal inference
* The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled,
natural, and field experiments
* The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model
uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it
Main Lecturers:
Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University)
Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow
of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He
is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor
of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses
causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics,
philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and
the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher
Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics,
the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics,
Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary
and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics,
and applied econometrics.
Jennifer Jhun (Duke University)
Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke
University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of
Political Economy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of
Pittsburgh. Her main research interests are in the philosophy of science,
especially philosophy of economics, but also in issues in other areas, such
as psychology and physics. She is currently engaged on a project that
investigates antitrust from a historical and philosophy-of-science
perspective: Whats the Point of ceteris Paribus? or, How to Understand
Supply and Demand Curves. Philosophy of Science 85, no. 2 (2018): 271-292;
Economics, Equilibrium Methods, and Multi-scale Modeling. Erkenntnis 86,
no. 2 (2021): 457-472; Multi-Model Reasoning in Economics: The Case of
COMPASS. Philosophy of Science 90, no. 4 (2023): 836-854; Implied Market
Shares and Antitrust Markets as Fuzzy Sets. Forthcoming at The Antitrust
Bulletin. (Joint with Matthew Panhans, Federal Trade Commission)
Guest Lecturer:
Marcel Boumans (University of Utrecht)
Marcel Boumans is historian and philosopher of science at Utrecht
University. His main research focus is on understanding empirical research
practices in science outside the lab from a philosophy of
science-in-practice perspective. He is particularly interested in the
practices of measurement and modelling and the role of mathematics in social
science. The first step in these practices is to make sense of the available
data. Visualisations play an important role in this. His current research
project Vision and Visualisation is nearing completion with a book
manuscript Shaping the Phenomena.
The program is primarily directed at graduate students and junior
researchers in philosophy of science and economics as well as empirical
economists at policy institutions (eg, central banks) but the organizers
also encourage applications from people in all stages of their career and
from fields other than economics that apply advanced econometrics.

PhD-scholarships in Neurophilosophy (LMU-GSN)
******************************************
(1) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (München, Deadline: 17.02.2025)
PhD-scholarships in Neurophilosophy (LMU-GSN)
The Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN) at LMU Munich
invites applications for several PhD scholarships in Neurophilosophy.
The GSN is the teaching entity for the Munich Center of Neurosciences -
Brain & Mind (MCN). Through creating an interdisciplinary network of
research the GSN provides a stimulating environment for students and
faculty to produce novel formulations of current concepts and theories.
Successful applicants will be affiliated with the Research Center for
Neurophilosophy and Ethics of Neurosciences
(https://www.philosophie.lmu.de/en/faculty/research-center-for-neurophilosop…)
at the GSN.
Projects in the research center fall in the following areas:
* philosophy of cognitive neuroscience (explanation, reduction)
* philosophy and cognitive science of agency (mental causation, free
will, moral psychology, abilities)
* philosophy and cognitive science of reasoning (e.g. deductive and
non-deductive reasoning, logic and neural networks, decision making)
* ethics of neuroscience (research ethics, enhancement)
* philosophy of perception
* philosophy and social cognition
In the new application round we encourage applications in smaller focus
areas in order to build research groups. In the 2024/25 round the focus
areas are:
* human agency (esp. mental causation, complex action, multi-tasking,
attention, reductive and non-reductive explanation of agency)
* metacognition (esp. Metacognition in perception, self-evaluation and
sense of self)
* group cognition (group epistemology, collective decisions and group
responsibility)
However, single exceptional and independent projects in one of the other
areas are also encouraged.
Applicants should have advanced training in philosophy (typically a
Master's degree in philosophy) and a genuine interest in the
neurosciences. This includes the willingness to acquire substantial
knowledge of empirical work relevant to their philosophical project.
Cooperative projects with empirical scientists in the network of the MCN
are strongly encouraged.
The application period opened on December 1st 2024 and will close on
February 17th 2025, (12:00 noon CET).
Please check our website
(https://www.philosophie.lmu.de/en/faculty/research-center-for-neurophilosop…)
and the GSN website
(https://www.gsn.uni-muenchen.de/apply/how_to_apply_active/index.html)
for details concerning the application procedure. The application
includes an outline of your proposed research project, a CV, an official
transcript of your academic work (list of attended courses; grades),
diplomas and two separate academic reference letters. Please also name
two potential supervisors (possibly including one non-philosopher) from
the core or affiliated neurophilosophy faculty of the GSN.

Call for Abstracts
Graduate Conference
Identity and Right-Wing Ideology
Freie Universität Berlin
Institute for Philosophy
14 February 2025
Confirmed keynote speakers: Nikita Dhawan (TU Dresden) and Torsten Menge
(Northwestern University in Qatar)
Right-wing movements have increased exponentially over the last decade.
They pose a threat to democratic political systems by promoting
nationalism, xenophobia, racism, and politically motivated violence.
They tend to be structured around exclusive identities involving
political myths about the existence of supra-personal entities or
groups. These identities are portrayed as something under threat that is
nonetheless worth preserving. An example is the Great Replacement
Theory, which claims that white, Christian Europeans are being
demographically and culturally replaced, usually by Muslim populations.
This theory is, of course, not supported by quantitative evidence.
However, proponents of this theory include prominent mainstream
politicians (e.g., Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, or Viktor
Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary) and people in extraordinary positions
of power (e.g., businessman Elon Musk). Equally, a great proportion of
the incidents involving considerable political violence (i.e., terror
attacks such as the Christchurch Mosque shootings, or Anders Breivik’s
attacks) occurring in recent years have been motivated by fears fuelled
by this theory.
This form of identity – conceived as a set of characteristics of a
social group – involves a different, relational understanding implied
by the desire for the former to 'remain the same'. In metaphysics,
identity is conceived in two ways: qualitative (as a relation between
two entities that have the same properties) and numerical (as a relation
that an entity can only have with itself, usually conceived and examined
as it is extended temporally). These issues come up in the context of
the metaphysics of the self, as the question of personal identity over
time. This asks what a necessary and sufficient condition is for a
person at one point in time to be (numerically) identical with a person
at another point in time – or what constitutes this identity.
We invite abstracts from graduate students in philosophy and the social
sciences that explore the ways in which right-wing ideology involves
matters of identity. While interdisciplinary approaches are welcome, the
aim will be to focus on the metaphysical commitments about identity
these tend to involve. Conversely, can insights from metaphysics,
especially but not limited to the question of personal identity (e.g.,
reductionism), be used to critique right-wing concerns, such as those
involved by the great replacement theory? And on what grounds can we
distinguish legitimate concerns that involve comparable identity
relations (e.g., those informing anti-colonial struggles)? Participants
will be offered up to 20 minutes to present their papers, followed by 10
minutes for discussion. Presentations will be in English.
Bursaries will be awarded to help with travel costs (paid as an
honorarium). Priority will be given to those who cannot rely on
institutional support to cover these costs.
Submission guidelines: Please submit an abstract of up to 400 words by
12 January 2025. The abstract should be sent to
mihnea.chiujdea(a)fu-berlin.de, attached to an e-mail with the subject
“Abstract”, along with your name, affiliation, a brief biographical
note and information regarding travel fund needs. Successful applicants
will be notified by 17 January.

(1) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Bern, Deadline: 20.01.2025)
Two PhD positions in the project "Worldly Indeterminacy"
The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Bern offers two PhD
positions within the project "Worldly Indeterminacy", which is funded by
an SNSF Consolidator Grant. The working hypothesis of the project is
that there are facts about the world that remain indeterminate no matter
how much we know. The goal is to develop a metaphysical theory of this
indeterminacy and to investigate its consequences for normative
questions, especially the attribution of responsibility.
The project group will consist of four members: Prof. Dr. Vera
Hoffmann-Kolss (PI, University of Bern), Dr. Jonas Werner (University of
Bern), and two PhD students.
The deadline for applications is January 20, 2025.

Einladung zur Buchpräsentation
Demokratisierung des Wissens: Von der Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik zu
Isotype
Buchpräsentation und Diskussion mit Günther Sandner
International System Of TYpographic Picture Education.

Policy bias in economic research and the epistemological problems of
econometrics: Lessons for designing economic policy processes
SUERF BAFFI Bocconi webinar
Tuesday, January 14, 2025
Online, Webex, 3-4.30 pm
A recent paper finds considerable policy bias in economic research. Jelveh,
Kogut and Naidu (2024) show that partisanship is detectable across fields
and within fields, even across those estimating the same theoretical
parameter. This poses serious challenges to economic policy development.
Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role
in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and
financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute
to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support
the proliferation of models and econometrics. Yet, research resources in
academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on
the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to
the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative
challenges of the everyday work with models and econometrics as well as the
inevitable role of expert judgement. Yet, understanding these challenges
would be crucial to design policy processes that effectively address
potential policy biases on economic policy development and ensure the
integrity of that process. This SUERF panel discussion discusses how serious
the policy bias in economic research is and how it affects policy
development. Furthermore, panellists will explain how that policy bias is
possible even when rigorous mathematical /statistical methods are employed.
Finally, the panel suggests design features of economic policy development
processes that improve its integrity in the face of the policy bias in
economic research.

2 Research Positions (Postdocs), ERC project "The Structure of
Normativity"
The positions are based in the ERC research group 'REASONS F1RST - The
Structure of Normativity' (PI: Benjamin Kiesewetter).
Project description:
Some of the core fields of philosophy - including moral philosophy,
value theory, and epistemology - are, at their heart, concerned with
normative questions: questions about what is good or bad, right or
wrong, justified or unjustified. These questions concern the content of
judgements that human beings are constantly making and that structure
our way of thinking, feeling, and acting. But while there is wide
agreement in contemporary philosophy that normative judgements form a
unified and important category of human thought, philosophers still
struggle to understand what normativity actually is. One highly
attractive hypothesis is that normativity can be analysed in terms of
reasons - i.e. in terms of the factors that count in favour of or
against actions or attitudes. The aim of REASONS F1RST is to
systematically explore this Reasons-First Approach on a large scale and
across various philosophical subdisciplines. Fostering multidisciplinary
conversations between moral philosophy, epistemology, value theory,
aesthetics, the philosophy of emotions, and related areas, the project
will develop novel analyses of normative phenomena. It also seeks to
address recent challenges to the Reasons-First Approach and to compare
it to competing approaches. REASONS F1RST thus pursues a twofold
objective: (i) to assess the merits and demerits of the Reasons-First
Approach compared to alternative proposals, and (ii) to work out in
detail how different normative phenomena - including values, obligations
and rights, the justification of beliefs, as well as appropriateness
norms for emotions - can be explained in terms of reasons.
The work programme of REASONS F1RST will be carried out in four
sub-projects: (1) Reasons and Value; (2) Reasons and Ought; (3) Reasons
and Knowledge; and (4) Reasons and Fittingness. According to our present
plans, one of the advertised positions is associated with sub-project
(3), while the other is associated with sub-project (4). However, we
will also seriously consider applications from candidates whose research
interests concern other aspects of the project. Further information on
the project is available at the project website:
https://thestructureofnormativity.net/project.

(5) CALL FOR PAPERS (Enschede, Deadline: 14.02.2025)
AI and Animals: Ethical Impacts of Artificial Intelligence on Non-humans
Symposium
This symposium will be a 2-day track as part of the Joint Conference on
Philosophy of Computing and AI hosted by the International Association
for Computing and Philosophy (IACAP) and the Society for the Study of
Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour (AISB)).
* Conference dates: July 1-3, 2025
* Conference website: https://iacapconf.org/
* Conference location: University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands.
Symposium Organizers: Leonie N. Bossert, Bernice Bovenkerk, Mark Ryan
Symposium Description:
Artificial intelligence (AI) holds the potential to dramatically impact
the lives of domesticated, urban, and wild non-human animals (hereafter:
animals), for good or bad (Singer and Fai Tse, 2023). AI-powered drones
can take companion dogs for a walk, and animal robots can replace living
companion animals or zoo animals (Bossert and Coeckelbergh, 2024). AI
can provide alternatives to animal testing, for example, by predicting
the toxicity of chemical compounds (Singer and Fai Tse, 2023). On the
other hand, experiments with brain-computer interfaces can increase
animal use (Coghlan and Parker, 2023). AI is used in self-driving cars,
which may or may not be programmed to avoid animals on the road.
Monitoring animals via AI-enabled trackers and drones can aid wildlife
conservation but can also be abused by poachers (ibid.). AI-powered
cameras for the scientific study and protection of wild animals can lead
to animals changing their habits (ibid.). Finally, AI promises to make
interspecies understanding and communication possible, e.g., with
Alaskan humpback whales (McCowan et al., 2023).
However, AI also raises ethical challenges. For example, speciesist bias
in algorithms can either reinforce the popular image of animals as
commodities and edible products, or it can paint an overly rosy picture
of the way 'production animals' are housed (Hagendorff et al, 2023).
Datafication in animal farming may lead to the further objectification
of animals (Bos et al. 2018). It may lead us to conceive of animals as a
'batch of data'. Precision livestock farming (PLF) may also lead to
alienation between farmers and animals and erode farmers' experiential
knowledge. Farming systems that are run by AI harbour many health and
welfare risks in case of malfunction. The use of AI in the case of urban
or wild animals may have unintended consequences for animal behaviour
and welfare. Trying to communicate with whales or other animals with AI
can have detrimental effects on these animals' social structures and
culture (Ryan and Bossert, 2024). During this symposium, we will discuss
the ethical aspects of a wide range of AI applications in the context of
animals. We invite talks that focus on specific applications of AI to
animals and their ethical consequences and talks that deal with more
theoretical issues around using AI for animals. Besides ethicists and
philosophers, we invite scientists and engineers in AI design to join
the symposium. The symposium relates to several topics central to the
conference, but with animals as a central focus, as opposed to humans.
For example:
- AI in precision livestock farming
- AI in animal testing
- AI in veterinary medicine and companion animals
- AI to interpret or communicate with animals
- AI to understand animal cognition, emotions, or behaviours
- AI for animal protection and conservation
- AI, climate change, and biodiversity
Call for Abstracts:
We warmly invite presentations for this 2-day-symposium. If you want to
present your research, please take note of the following information:
- E-mail your abstract (no more than 300 words), with name and contact
information of all co-authors, to mark.ryan(a)wur.nl by February 14th,
2025.
- Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by February 28th.
- The Symposium agenda will be sent to accepted presenters by March
28th.
- The event takes place over two days during the conference (July 1st -
July 3rd)
- Following the event, we will invite presenters to develop their
presentation into a full-length paper for a special issue.
* Note: The presenters must register for the whole conference and all
conference costs and fees are at their own discretion.

== Topic:
After three years on the topic, we have realized that this context is
too narrow to understand formalization and thus we have we added a
yearly theme (although not all talks are necessarily aligned with it).
This year we focus on ethical perspectives. Are there ethical aspects of
the practices of formal sciences (including math), which role play
formal arguments in politcal contexts, what about aspects of ethical AI
...
This series of events began with the theme of foundations in the context
of automated theorem proving:
What are the chances and problems of the act of formalization in the
context of mathematics? It is often said, that all of mathematics can be
reduced to first-order logic and set theory. The derivation indicator
view says that all proofs stand in some relation to a derivation, i.e. a
mechanically checkable syntactical objects following fixed rules, that
would not have any gaps. For a long time this was a mere hope. There may
have been proofs of concepts from early logicists but derivation never
played a big role in mathematical practice. The modern computer might
change this. Interactive and automated theorem provers promise to make
the construction of a justification without any gaps feasible for
complex mathematics. Is this promise justified? Will the future of
mathematical practice shift to more formal mathematics? Should it? We
hope to illuminate such questions and focus especially on what these
developments mean for the future of the curriculum of university
students.

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Zofia Hałęza (University of Łódź)
How Women Contributed to the Emergence of Polish Analytic Philosophy.
Outstanding Female Philosophers from the Lvov-Warsaw School
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with
talks by our present fellows.
Date: 12/12/2024
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G
Abstract:
From today's perspective, one of the most significant 20th-century
discoveries in Polish philosophy's history was the Lvov-Warsaw School's
rediscovery. The turbulent history of Poland and the political events after
the Second World War led this group's members, who were still living, to the
conviction that science would forget them. However, thanks to the woman
philosopher Izydora Dąmbska and her influence on her pupils, the memory of
the Lvov-Warsaw School has survived. I would even say - that the Lvov-Warsaw
School has been rediscovered. Although the Lvov-Warsaw School was founded at
the end of the 19th century by Kazimierz Twardowski, to a large extent his
female students have contributed to the survival of the memory of his
legacy, not only in the immaterial sphere, but also in the form of
artefacts, archives and documents. In addition to their merits in the
struggle for the survival of memory, women at the Lvov-Warsaw School
practised philosophy equally with men. At the turn of the 20th century, this
was a phenomenon unprecedented in any school of philosophy.
A critical analysis of the history of philosophy is a vital phenomenon.
After all, people write histories, and several different factors influence
them. Thus, it is the history of Polish philosophy which I have been
studying for several years. In the case of the Lvov-Warsaw School, we are
dealing with a phenomenon that has yet to be sufficiently described-namely,
the number of active women in this formation.
In this seminar, I am eager to present the potential impact of my research,
conducted as part of my PhD at the University of Lodz in the Doctoral School
of Humanities. I will also share the inspiration that led me to this topic.
How has the issue of women in the Lvov-Warsaw School been addressed in the
past, and what promising avenues are there for further exploration?
My research is primarily a critical analysis of the history of philosophy
and a comparative analysis of the state of Polish philosophy at that time.
In telling the story of women associated with the Lvov-Warsaw School, I will
also present my research methodology and the unique historical and social
conditions that enabled women in Poland to climb the scientific Olympus. I
will emphasize the need for philosophical reflection in women's history, as
it is not just a reenactment and reminder of forgotten figures and their
achievements, but a crucial aspect that adds depth and significance to our
understanding of the past. In the current situation, in addition to
multiplying research on women's history, we should also ask ourselves - how
do we do it? To what end do we conduct such research, and what does it
result in?

(1) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Karlsruhe, Deadline: 15.01.2025)
PhD Position: Social and ethical aspects of sustainability analysis of
battery raw materials
The Graduate School KLIREC is offering a PhD position at the Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology, KIT, on the _social and ethical aspects of
sustainability analysis of battery raw materials_ at the earliest
possible time. The duration of the position is one year, and an
extension is scheduled for another two years based on a positive
evaluation after the first year.
This interdisciplinary PhD project is jointly supervised by Marcel Weil
(technology assessment) and Rafaela Hillerbrand (philosophy of
engineering and technology) and is part of the KLIREC graduate school
(https://www.hs-pforzheim.de/forschung/institute/inec/studium_promotion/klir…).
Batteries, as a versatile storage option for electricity, are seen as an
enabling technology of the energy transition towards renewables, both
for the mobility sector and for ensuring the electric grid's stability.
At present, lithium-ion batteries are widely used, especially in the
mobility and stationary application sectors. Lithium-ion batteries
contain critical raw materials like e.g., cobalt, nickel, copper, and
graphite, besides lithium. However, the extraction of these metals may
have adverse social and environmental impacts. While the latter are
addressed to some extent in sustainability assessments, there is not
much work yet on the ethical aspects of extraction and usage,
particularly regarding circular economy frameworks. This PhD project is
meant to fill this research gap and connect quantitative environmental
sustainability research with qualitative ethical research. A particular
focus shall be placed on international justice aspects within energy
ethics.
We offer a 1-year contract with the possibility of an extension of
another 2 years within KLIREC and affiliation with ITAS (Institute for
Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis), KIT. You will participate
in the graduate school training program and join a research group at
ITAS.
ITAS offers a lively inter- and transdisciplinary research environment
for technology assessment with a strong focus, amongst others, on
sustainability analysis of emerging energy technologies, life cycle
analysis, and philosophy of engineering and technology.
What we are looking for: You should have a strong background and hold a
master's degree in applied ethics, preferably ethics of engineering and
technology, or in technology assessment, preferably life cycle analysis
(LCA)/material flow analysis (MFA) and have a very strong interest in
the respective other field. You are fluent in English and highly
motivated to work in an interdisciplinary environment and be able to do
independent research. Experience in interdisciplinary collaborations is
helpful.
Please send your application _by 15.1.2025_ with the usual documents
(CV, including three contact persons for a letter of reference, and a
writing sample) in a single document to rafaela.hillerbrand(a)gmail.com in
an email with the header "KLIREC 2024".
For any questions about this position, please contact:

(6) CALL FOR PAPERS (Norwich, Deadline: 01.03.2025)
Workshop: Experimental argument analysis
Workshop: Experimental argument analysis: Interdisciplinary perspectives
on verbal reasoning
July 9-10, 2025
University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK.
Keynote: Edouard Machery (Pittsburgh)
This satellite workshop of the 5th European Experimental Philosophy
Conference brings together experimental philosophers, cognitive
psychologists, and experimental linguists, to open up the experimental
philosophy of verbal reasoning as a new interdisciplinary field of
study. Three slots are reserved for submitted papers. Accommodation
costs of presenters will be covered. Submission deadlines for 500-word
abstracts: _March 1st, 2025_. Programme and submission link:
https://x-phi.uea.ac.uk/EAA2025-workshop/
_Questions:_
_* Methods:_ How can empirical studies support the reconstruction or
evaluation of verbal reasoning? Which conceptual and empirical tools can
be adapted for this purpose and how? How can formal and experimental
methods be combined to facilitate normative evaluation?
_* Mechanisms:_ How do automatic comprehension and production inferences
shape verbal reasoning? What biases affect such inferences? Which
factors affect specifically the contextualization of default inferences?
How are irregular polysemes processed? What norms do people rely on for
specific arguments of interest? How much individual variation is there
in this respect?
_* Applications:_ How can insights into language processing, and
specifically polysemy processing, support the assessment of
philosophical arguments? How effective are verbal arguments at changing
people's minds? Which aspects of automatic language processing influence
the persuasiveness of verbal arguments? To what extent do such arguments
contribute to philosophical puzzles and paradoxes? How can insight into
automatic language processing support the improvement of our conceptual
tools?

Workshop: Wissenschaftliche Philosophie. Transformationen und
Kontinuitäten im langen 19. Jahrhundert

Elementbegriff.
Anmeldung erbeten bis 9. Dezember 2024 an kgpw(at)oeaw.ac.at [1]

*Symposium "Science and Politics", Vienna Circle Society (Campus, Hof 1,
Eingang 1.2), Friday, December 6, 2pm:*
2pm: Bianca Crewe (UBC Vancouver): The Symbolic View of Science and its
Application in Politics
It is now common knowledge that a sea-change occurred in the philosophy
of science towards the end of the nineteenth century. Many philosophers
of this era characterize the preceding paradigm as mechanisticor
materialist, in reference to the philosophical outlook, derived by
science and presupposed by science, that suggests a specific view of the
methods, aims, and standards of intelligibility in science and
epistemology. Here, I will describe how this paradigm operates in the
work of three representatives of philosophy in the twentieth century:
Ernst Cassirer, Alfred North Whitehead, and Philipp Frank. These figures
position themselves as overcoming mechanistic philosophy through an
understanding of science as symbolic. I focus on how their broadly
functionalist, semiotic views develop out of reflections on the methods
of the physical sciences in the second half of the nineteenth century
(particularly electromagnetic theory), and how this is taken up in their
later work in considerations of the role of symbols in politics and
culture more generally. All three, I argue, have a critical project in
common, aimed at freedom from historically conditioned symbols. The
primary tool they use in this project is narratives of the history of
philosophy of science.
In the case of Whitehead, my focus is primarily on two lecture series’,
published respectively as Science and the Modern World in 1925, and
Symbolism: its Meaning and Effect in 1927. My focus in Cassirer will be
his application of symbolic forms to nationalism, and in the case of
Frank, I will offer a reading of his symbolic view of science in service
of a humanistic project “synthesizing” the sciences with other parts of
human culture, without just latching onto evocative general terminology
in the sciences (like matter, energy, etc.) to do so. This project moves
to recognize the centrality of the concept of the symbol in twentieth
century philosophy; its genesis, and its common place in the work of
seemingly diverse philosophers, towards a different thematic emphasis in
the history of analytic philosophy and the history of philosophy of science.
3pm: Christian Damböck (IVC): Fascism as Illogical Reasoning. Rudolf
Carnap's Forgotten Approach
In his now completely forgotten contribution to the Harvard Tercentenary
Celebration in 1936, Rudolf Carnap outlines a theory of illogical
reasoning that can be interpreted as a theory of fascist politics. While
theories of fascism often see the loss of humanistic values as the
primary problem, Carnap sees the values of humanism as natural
components of the scientific world conception, so that anti-humanism and
fascism can only arise as a consequence of the loss of the latter.
According to Carnap, illogical thinking occurs in three forms: (a)
political attitudes are disguised as facts or destiny, (b) inconsistent
or logically misconstrued value systems are accepted, (c) insufficiently
confirmed or empirically false premises are taken as a basis. Fascism
arises from propaganda that spreads illogical thinking in society. I
contextualize Carnap's 1936 approach to explain why it was not pursued
further and why value-based theories of fascism continue to prevail
today. On this basis, I also outline some consequences of a Carnapian
understanding of fascism for contemporary politics.

Hans-Joachim Dahms (ed.), Franz Roh 1890-1965. Kunstkritiker, Vorkämpfer der Kulturmoderne. Eine Kollektivbiografie, Vienna: Virtual Archive of Logical Empiricism, 2024
