of Lisbon
Call for applications for one 12 month Postdoctoral Scholarship, Project
"Indeterminacy in Science" at LanCog, Centre of Philosophy, University
of Lisbon, starting 1 August 2025.
We cordially invite applications for a Postdoc within the research
project Indeterminacy in Science funded by the FCT and hosted by the
LanCog group at the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon.
The project systematically investigates alleged instances of
metaphysical indeterminacy, mind- and language-independent indeterminacy
in the world, in science.
It will both critically engage with arguments for the existence of
indeterminacy in science, extend the scope of the investigation to, so
far, under- or completely unexplored areas of the natural sciences,
including relativistic physics, and elaborate and assess recent
controversial suggestions to the effect that causal processes, or the
laws of nature are indeterminate.

Applicant should have a strong background in metaphysics, metaphysics of
science, philosophy of science, or philosophy of physics, or in other
areas of philosophy which enable them to do high-quality research
related to the topic of the project.
They have to hold a PhD in philosophy or a related area qualifying them
to do work on the project which they have acquired no longer than three
years before the submission of the application.
The Postdoc will work on at least one part of the project and will
author (potentially in collaboration with the PI or other team members)
research papers to be presented at workshops and conferences and
published in recognised international journals and will also support the
communication and dissemination activities of the project.
The project is integrated into the LanCog group
(https://cful.letras.ulisboa.pt/lancog/) and the Postdoc will be a full
member of the group.
The starting date of the position is 1 August 2025 and the Postdoc will
be hired for 12 months. Please note that the official job ad (linked

it would require an extension of the duration of the whole project.
Stipend amount: 1801 Euro per month

The Philosophy of Privacy
The Salzburg Ethics Group (https://salzburgethics.com/) are happy to
announce their second conference for the three-year project 'The Source
View on the Right to Privacy'. The workshop will be supported by the
Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the Department of Philosophy (GW) of the
University of Salzburg, and by the Society for Analytic Philosophy
(GAP).
The topic of the conference will be 'The Philosophy of Privacy'.
The conference will provide a platform for scholars to present their
work in plenary sessions, to share their ideas with colleagues, and to
explore the ways that privacy intersects with other areas of philosophy.
As the first workshop took place online, this one will take place
in-person at The University of Salzburg, from the 22nd to 23rd of
September. There will be talks by Annabelle Lever, Asja Ahatović,
Leonhard Menges and Elizabeth Ventham.
We would like to invite submissions of abstracts of up to 500 words for
the conference.
Possible topics include:
* How does the value of privacy contrast with values like sharing and
being known?
* Is privacy a pro tanto good?
* Or is privacy only ever instrumentally good?
* How does privacy relate to values like equality and social justice?
* What can theorising about privacy tell us about digital ethics?
* What domains can we have privacy over?
* Can groups have privacy?
* Can privacy get in the way of empathy?
* Is privacy about access, control, or both?
If you would like to present at the conference, please prepare an
abstract of up to 500 words for blind review and send it in an email to
Elizabeth.ventham(a)plus.ac.at by April 28th.

_The Economists' Philosophy Day - A celebration of philosophical
reflection in economic science_ - 20 Nov. 2025
In deference to the work of all inquisitive minds, past and present, who
have embraced philosophical reflection to understand the consequential
events for people's wellbeing, the Journal of Philosophical Economics in
partnership with The Working Group on Economic Philosophy and Ethics in
the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Philosophie (DG Phil) announce this call
for the fourth edition of the Economists' Philosophy Day.
In October 2005, the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed the third
Thursday of November every year 'World Philosophy Day' recalling that
'philosophy is a discipline that encourages critical and independent
thought and is capable of working towards a better understanding of the
world and promoting tolerance and peace.'
It is in this spirit that the organizers propose to celebrate
Economists' Philosophy Day by organizing online plenary sessions on
scientific communication dedicated to the philosophical landmarks
through which our science has been challenged, for better or for worse.
For this edition, this call invites contributions in the theme of
_The Past of the Futures: Inquiries Through the Lens of Economic
Philosophy_
A fundamental assumption underlying many approaches in economics,
ethics, and philosophy is that human action involves taking
future-oriented decision-making thereby influencing the conditions for
the realization of future states. From this perspective, human action
connects the past and the future; and human beings, endowed with
scientific knowledge or simply obvious reasoning, can achieve some
control over future states of affairs. An epistemic, an ontological, and
a pragmatic problem can be associated with this premise. The epistemic
problem concerns the relevance and validity of the knowledge that actors
have gained or can gain about the social world. The ontological problem
is based on assumptions about the nature of the social reality in which
we act. Does this reality allow for a connection between the past and
future based on human action? The pragmatic problem has to do with how
our projects change because we act as part of the world, observe how we
and others act, and make predictions about future states based on that
observation. The common denominator of all problems is that something
that is of our making cannot be independent of us.
Through the lens of economic philosophy, the aim of this call for papers
is to explore how theories or approaches in disciplines such as
economics, philosophy, or ethics have dealt with the three problems
mentioned above. Submissions should provide innovative and
thought-provoking perspectives that align with the theme of the
symposium including but not limited to
* The relationship between uncertainty and human existence, and how
uncertainty can be the basis for a broader understanding of temporality
and meaning.
* The role of moral theories for the understanding of epistemic
problems.
* The difference that taking the lifeworld perspective can make in
understanding human action.
* How contemporary challenges (e.g., climate change, technological
development, economic inequities) reshape philosophical approaches to
uncertainty.
Proposals of approx. 500 words are expected by April 25, 2025. After
acceptance, authors are invited to submit the full version of their
study for peer-review. Proposals will be sent to editor(a)jpe.ro and
Michaela.Haase(a)fu-berlin.de. Paper presentations can also be proposed in
conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Working Group on Economic
Philosophy and Ethics, taking place from September 18-20, 2025, in St.
Gallen, Switzerland.

Cognitive and Conative Powers: A Conference in Honour of Dominik Perler

For centuries, a foundational doctrine in Western philosophy and
psychology has posited that living beings possess two types of mental
faculties: cognitive and conative powers. Within this tradition, many
philosophers held that, among animals, only humans possess intellect and
will--the higher cognitive and conative powers--which align them with
even nobler beings, such as angels and God.
This seemingly straightforward characterization of intellectual
faculties raises profound questions that have been repeatedly explored
and debated throughout Western philosophy. Key questions include: (1)
Are these two intellectual faculties genuine entities or merely
constructs? (2) What is the nature of these faculties, and what are
their capabilities and limitations? (3) How do these faculties interact?
Does the intellect govern the will, or does the will govern the
intellect? (4) In what ways do these faculties relate to discussions of
human freedom and morality, and how do they feature in anthropology and
science? (5) How do these faculties relate to God, and how does this
relationship influence the created world?
Throughout his distinguished academic career, Dominik Perler has engaged
deeply with all of these questions. At this conference, many of his
academic interlocutors will gather to explore these topics from various
perspectives and to synthesize them into a comprehensive history of the
relationship between cognitive and conative powers from antiquity to the
present day.

Tractatus - Essaypreis des Philosophicum Lech
Jedes Jahr wird beim Philosophicum Lech der mit 25.000EUR dotierte
Tractatus - Preis für philosophische Essayistik verliehen.
Prämiert werden herausragende Essays, die philosophische Fragen für
eine breitere Öffentlichkeit verständlich diskutieren und einen
Beitrag zu einer nicht nur fachspezifischen Debatte liefern. Die
Originalität des Denkansatzes, die Gelungenheit der sprachlichen
Gestaltung und die Relevanz des Themas werden dabei besonders
berücksichtigt.
Der auf Anregung von Schriftsteller_ Michael Köhlmeier _vom
Philosophicum Lech ins Leben gerufene Essay-Preis wird 2025 zum 17. Mal
vergeben und gehört mit 25.000EUR Preisgeld zu den höchstdotierten im
deutschsprachigen Raum.
Die Ermittlung des Preisträgers bzw. der Preisträgerin erfolgt durch
den Literaturkritiker und Autor _Ijoma Mangold_ (D), die Philosophin und
Kulturjournalistin _Catherine Newmark_ (CH) und die
Literaturwissenschaftlerin und Kritikerin _Daniela Strigl_ (A) unter dem
Vorsitz des Philosophen und Co-Intendanten des Philosophicum Lech
_Konrad Paul Liessmann _(A) (nicht stimmberechtigt).
