(2) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Berlin, Deadline: 06.01.2025)
Communications & Publications Manager at IGVI
The Institute of Global Value Inquiry (IGVI) is a non-profit foundation
based in Berlin that promotes interdisciplinary research into the
formation and contestation of values and norms, from a global
perspective.
Your challenge:
You will be responsible, in close coordination with IGVI's board of
directors, for facilitating communication inside the organization and
for communicating the fulfillment of the organization's mission to the
public. In particular, this will include the following three tasks. Your
first and main task will be the management of the Institute's main
publication outlet, the _Journal of Global Value Inquiry_, which will
appear bi-annually from 2026 onwards. Managing the journal will include
acquisition and submission processing, editorial and reviewer
management, and copyediting for online publication. Second, you will
assist with the organization of IGVI discussion and conference formats
(both virtual and in-person), Third, you will be responsible for content
management for IGVI's homepage, for the administration of newsletters,
and for editorial assistance with other, more irregular publication
formats.
Your profile:
You have excellent native English language skills and are a
self-motivated, reliable personality with a communicative character and
a team-orientated and meticulous working style. Your pragmatic and
independent attitude is paired with strong editorial and copyediting
skills and correlated experience, and an interest in and willingness to
gain familiarity with interdisciplinary research into the global
formation and contestation of values and norms. You have completed at
least an undergraduate degree in philosophy or a neighboring subject in
the humanities or social or political sciences. Technical knowledge in
the administration of a homepage will need to be acquired, but is not
necessary when starting the job. Command of the German language is not
essential when starting the job.
Your opportunity:
You will have the opportunity to develop and expand the communications
and publications department of a recently founded, internationally
active research institute with excellent prospects in an important
position. The position with a regular weekly working time of 20 hours
and a flexible working schedule, taking into account the tasks involved,
is initially limited to two years, but will be made permanent if
successful. Office space in the center of Berlin can be provided, if
needed. However, the position can largely be carried out remotely from
any location in Germany. Remuneration will be based on performance and
experience. IGVI strives to achieve equal representation of women in the
organization, which is why they will be given preferential consideration
if equally qualified.
Please send your exclusively digital application (including a CV with
references, proof of editorial and copyediting experience and details of
your salary expectations) by the 6th of January 2025 to the acting
director of IGVI, Dr. Valentin Beck: valentin.beck(a)igvi.org.

(5) CALL FOR PAPERS (Fribourg, Deadline: 15.01.2025)
Aristotle's Methods of Philosophical Inquiry
_Conference Title:_ Aristotle's Methods of Philosophical Inquiry
_Organizers:_ Nevim Borçin and Béatrice Lienemann
_Conference Dates: _23-24 May 2025
_Location: _University of Fribourg, Fribourg, Switzerland
_Call for Abstracts_
In recent decades, there has been renewed interest in Aristotle's
philosophical methodology, particularly in ethics. Scholars are
increasingly examining Aristotle's logical works--especially the
_Posterior Analytics_--to reassess his methodological tools and
strategies. This trend has led to a reevaluation of foundational
concepts related to Aristotle's so-called method of _endoxa_, his
dialectical approach, and his handling of facts, opinions, and
appearances across both his practical and theoretical texts.
Researchers are revisiting Aristotle's works in ethics, politics,
psychology, metaphysics, physics, and biology to explore his
methodological approaches from new perspectives. This conference aims to
bring together scholars interested in Aristotle's methods of inquiry,
dialectic, logic, rhetoric, and their intersections within his
philosophical methodologies.
_Possible research themes include, but are not limited to:_
_* Endoxa_ and the role _endoxa_ play in Aristotle's arguments
* Aristotle's conception and use of dialectic in his practical and
theoretical texts
* The role of dialectic in his defense of the principle of
non-contradiction
* Definitions within Aristotle's philosophical methodology
* Plato's method of division and Aristotle's adaptation and
reinterpretation of this method
* The role of rhetoric in Aristotle's philosophical arguments
* Aristotle's treatment of the method of hypothesis
* Aristotle's so-called epistemic optimism
We invite contributions exploring these and related themes.
_Confirmed Speakers (In alphabetical order)_
* Lucas _Angioni_ (University of Campinas)
* Joseph _Bjelde_ (Humboldt University)
* Giulia _Bonasio_ (Durham University)
* Paolo _Crivelli_ (University of Notre Dame)
* Dorothea _Frede_ (University of Hamburg)
* Ronja _Hildebrandt_ (University of Dortmund)
* Christof _Rapp_ (Ludwig Maximilians-University Munich)
_Submission Guidelines_
We have a few slots available for additional speakers. We invite
extended abstracts of _500 words_ that clearly outline the research
question, methodology, and relevance to the conference theme.
Early- and mid-career scholars are especially encouraged to send
proposals.
Please submit your abstract, along with a short CV (maximum 3 pages), by
_15 January 2025 to nevim.borcin(a)unifr.ch._
_Important Dates_

Reading Group invitation
DATUM:

VON:
Rob Wilson <rwilson.robert(a)gmail.com>
AN:
Dear Phil colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to join a final reading group associated
with the ARC-Discovery Project Keeping Kinship in
Mind<https://keepingkinshipinmind.weebly.com/>, based at the University
of Western Australia (UWA). The group will focus on the penultimate
manuscript of Relational Beings: Kin Matters in the Fragile Sciences, a
forthcoming monograph by project lead Professor Rob Wilson that Oxford
University Press will publish late in 2025. Our discussions will inform
final, post-review changes to the manuscript.
The reading group will run weekly in a hybrid format, commencing on
Thursday, December 12th with a break of three weeks for Christmas. All
readings, room details for in-person meetings at UWA, and Teams links
for virtual attendance will be sent to your email (after registration).
Meetings will be 1:30 hours long, starting at 2 pm Perth time. To
convert to your time zone, you can use this
link<https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html>.
Relational Beings: Kin Matters in the Fragile Sciences addresses general
issues about reductionism, ethnocentrism, the relationships between the
cognitive, biological, and social sciences?within the philosophy of
anthropology, especially in the study of kinship. The book integrates
insights from various disciplines often siloed in discussions of kinship
and sociality. The central thread running through the three parts of
the book--on relations, on incest and its avoidance, and on kinship--is
that we best understand ourselves as relational beings by recognising
biological and cognitive dimensions to kinship and our sociality. This
runs counter to much recent work within cultural anthropology on kin and
kinship.
Meeting Schedule:
* December 12th:
* Chapter 1 Relatively Speaking
* Chapter 2 Mindful Relations
* December 19th:
* Chapter 3 Thinking About Relations Through Locke
* Chapter 4 Relations and Anthropological Knowledge
* January 9th:
* Chapter 5 Incest and its Avoidance in the Fragile Sciences
* Chapter 6 Escaping Disciplinary Grooves
* January 16th:
* Chapter 7 Kinship Past, Kinship Present, & Schneider?s Critique
* Chapter 8 Promulgating Progenerativism
* January 23rd:
* Chapter 9 The Ethnographic Argument
* Chapter 10 Why Kinship is Progeneratively Constrained
If you plan to attend, please let us know by sending an email to
lucia.neco(a)uwa.edu.au<mailto:lucia.neco@uwa.edu.au>. Feel free to join
all or selected meetings based on your availability and interest. We
will send the December chapters by the end of November; contact Rob
Wilson (rwilson.robert(a)gmail.com<mailto:rwilson.robert@gmail.com>) if
you want a copy of the whole manuscript in advance.
Best,
Dr. Lucia C. Neco (she/her)

Dear All,
*We are organizing a reading circle based on the topic “Philosophy of
Sex and Sexuality”!*
To start a conversation about /sex/, we need to be clear what is the
scope of the phenomenon we are talking about. For that we need to start
with /sexual desire/, which is closely linked to /sexual motivation,
arousal, and activity/.
That is already closely connected to issues within /politics of sex,
sexual orientation, and sexual identity/. When we engage in sexual acts,
we are living out our /sexual orientation/. Beyond our orientation,
understanding our /sexual identity/ is equally important as part of our
personal identity. On top of that, the cultural theory of queer sexual
identity plays a crucial role in shaping how we understand and express
ourselves in various contexts.
An interesting aspect to discuss is /normativity and permissibility of
sexual acts/ under the consideration of sexual orientation and
non-heteronomous identities. When discussing /good or bad sex/, we
usually assume that consent was given to start the encounter. Without
consent, the focus shifts to the permissibility of the act itself, with
the prevailing view being that consent is morally transformative from
impermissible to permissible. Is having the right mental state enough,
or can it be implied through certaincommunications? Additionally, to
which acts are we consenting?
Within the scope of the named phenomenon /objectification/ is a concept,
which can be viewed from different angles. The concept of /mutual
objectification/ refers to the notion when both partners may objectify
each other, which may be seen as problematic because it reduces a
person’s humanity to their body. On the other hand, objectification can
also be viewed from a /social perspective/, as feminist philosophers
argue. For instance, they claim that pornography negatively portrays
women’s sexuality, reinforcing harmful stereotypes. In contrast to that,
Thomas Nagel offers a different view on objectification as a complex,
multi-leveled awareness between two people, where both are mutually
aware of each other's desire.
*If that sounds interesting to you, don’t hesitate to send me an email –
I’d love to hear from you! We plan to start the reading circle next week.*
Best,
Kristina
Dear all,
I am co-organizing (with Sebastian Watzl and Katharine Browne) a
workshop entitled “Salience in Society: The Nature and Ethics of
Collective Attention” on 3–4 December here at the University of Vienna:
https://sites.google.com/view/salienceinsociety/
Of the 25 seats at NIG room 3A, 18 are already filled by the speakers
and the additional participants from Oslo. If you’re interested in
participating, please send me an email by 28th November with a brief
explanation of your interest in the topic. If there are more interested
people than places, we must leave some out, sadly.
This event is supported by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), project no.
ESP 410, “Engineering Salience”; European Union’s Horizon 2020 research
and innovation program, grant agreement no. 101003208, “GOODATTENTION:
Attention norms and their role in practical reason, epistemology, and
ethics”; and Norwegian Research Council (NFR), project no. 315373,

ABSTRACT:
Feyerabend became familiar with the Vienna Circle tradition and Logical
Empiricism in his formative years in post-war Vienna. However, since his
early intellectual trajectory, he made LE one of his favorite critical
targets, articulating his criticism in personal dialogue with some of
its most distinguished representatives. This paper focuses on the second
stage of Feyerabend's sustained assault against LE, examining both
Feyerabend's reception of LE and Hempel's response to Feyerabend's
challenge.
In a series of papers published between 1962 and 1966, Feyerabend
relentlessly questioned the descriptive adequacy and the normative
desirability of the 'orthodox', logical empiricist, accounts of
reduction and explanation advanced by Hempel and Nagel. Feyerabend's
persistent criticism shook North American philosophy of science and
prompted Hempel's reaction, which appeared in print in the second half
of the 1960s. Initially, Hempel retorted that Feyerabend's
methodological analysis was 'completely mistaken' and Feyerabend could
offer 'no support' for his allegations. This raises interesting
historiographical questions about the later reception of LE as it seems
that Feyerabend, driven by his anti-authoritarian stance, substantially
misinterpreted the logical empiricist research programme, his vantage
point notwithstanding. On the other hand, Hempel also recognised that
the descriptive issues on which Feyerabend insisted, despite having been
long acknowledged by LE, could have more far-reaching consequences than
previously envisaged. In fact, by the end of the 1960s, Hempel came to
make quite radical concessions, admitting that the standard logical
empiricist model for explicating the structure of scientific theories
was essentially 'misleading', that the logical empiricist account of
reduction was 'an untenable oversimplification', and that the logical
empiricist approach as to the meaning of scientific terms was actually
'misconceived'. In this respect, there are good reasons to consider the
decline of the logical empiricist research programme in the 1970s at
least partly as the result of Feyerabend's stimulating, however
misrepresenting, insights.
