(2) CALL FOR PAPERS (München, Deadline: 15.12.2024)
Workshop: Responsible AI: Promises, Pitfalls, and Practices
Dear colleagues,
We are very pleased to invite you to submit papers to our international
symposium: _Responsible AI: Promises, Pitfalls, and Practices _
April 8-10, 2025, Munich
_Organization: Center for Responsible AI Technologies (CReAITech),
Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities_
In recent years, AI technologies have rapidly gained prominence across
sectors like healthcare, finance, and labor market, offering the
potential to transform industries, enhance decision-making, and improve
services. However, alongside these promises come significant ethical,
social, and technical challenges. While AI has been praised for its
capacity to address complex issues and foster innovation, concerns about
bias, transparency, accountability, and fairness are increasingly
urgent. Critics warn that without careful oversight, AI could perpetuate
existing inequalities and create new forms of discrimination. Despite
these ongoing debates, much of the discourse remains speculative,
highlighting the need for deeper empirical and theoretical inquiry into
AI's impacts and the social, ethical and political responsibilities that
should guide its development.
Our symposium provides an opportunity to explore, from social sciences
and humanities perspectives and through interdisciplinary conversations,
what constitutes responsible AI development, application, and
governance. It aims to offer a platform for international researchers to
exchange insights, discuss new approaches, and foster interdisciplinary
collaborations that will enhance and deepen our understanding of what it
means to engage with AI responsibly.
We welcome presentations from a wide range of methodological and
theoretical perspectives, across the social sciences and humanities. We
are particularly interested in work that builds or reflects on research
conducted and interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in the
computer sciences. Submissions may include, but are not limited to:
* Analyses of social, ethical and political dimensions of AI development
and use practices across various fields of application (e.g., medicine,
industry, labor market, finance, etc.)
* Analyses of the social, political and economic ecosystems in which AI
is currently developed, including big data infrastructures
* Methodological challenges in studying AI in development and practice
(e.g. in integrative, trans-/interdisciplinary, and participatory
settings)
* Complex relations of academic and industry-based research in AI
* Theoretical and conceptual consideration for expanding conceptions of
responsible AI
* Sociotechnical innovations for embedding responsibility into AI
systems
* Analyses specifically focused on questions of social justice,
inclusion and equity in AI development and practice
This interdisciplinary event will take place from 8th to 10th April 2025
at the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation in Munich, Germany.
Please submit your title, abstract (max. 300 words) and a short bio
(max. 150 words) to kathrin.hertle(a)hfph.de until 15th December 2024.
Alongside traditional academic articles, we also consider alternative
ways of communicating research, such as videos, short stories, photo
essays, posters, verse, among others.

(3) CALL FOR PAPERS (Sonderband, Deadline: 30.10.2025)
The Monist: Rediscovering Carl Stumpf
_The Monist_ invites submissions for an upcoming thematic issue of the
journal on the philosophy of Carl Stumpf.
Advisory editors: Hamid Taieb (Humboldt University of Berlin) & Mark
Textor (King's College London)
Publication date: April 2027
Carl Stumpf (1848-1936) was a central figure of German-speaking
philosophy and psychology at the turn of the twentieth century. He is a
pioneer of Gestalt psychology and the philosophy and psychology of
music. Stumpf was a pupil of Franz Brentano and Hermann Lotze, and he
himself influenced his student Edmund Husserl, as well as psychologists
such as Wolfgang Köhler and Max Wertheimer, who were Stumpf's students
as well.
Stumpf's work is original and contains groundbreaking contributions to a
range of topics. He defended nativism about space by arguing that
perception has multiple contents. This thought plays also an important
role in his analysis of the perception of sound (especially the
perception of chords) and it set Gestaltpsychology on its course. His
theory of feelings contrasts fruitfully with that of James and Brentano.
He worked out a defense of critical realism, a trope ontology, a
non-psychologistic epistemology, a detailed analysis of sensory
contents, an account of the objectivity of concepts and propositions
without abstract objects, and he explored many other specific topics,
such as the origins of music. In addition, he devoted much time to
reflecting on the subject-matter of the different sciences and on how
they should be classified. In parallel to his theoretical
investigations, he also made experimentations in psychology and
musicology. He corresponded with Gottlob Frege, William James, and
Hermann Lotze, among others.
Given the originality of Stumpf's work, it is surprising that it is
neglected in the literature. There is very little engagement with Stumpf
systematically and/or historically. This special issue of _The Monist_
aims to change this situation. Its goal is to unlock the potential of
Stumpf's thought and to introduce his work to a broader philosophical
audience. It welcomes submissions from experts on Stumpf's philosophy
and from experts on philosophers that influenced or were influenced by
Stumpf as well as from philosophers that engage with important themes in
Stumpf from a contemporary perspective.
_Submission Information_
All submissions should be prepared for anonymous review and sent to the
advisory editors: hamid.taieb(a)hu-berlin.de and mark.textor(a)kcl.ac.uk
Manuscripts received from the call will first go through a pre-selection
by the advisory editors. The manuscripts passing it will be sent for
full double-blind review process.
Word limit: 7'000 words, including notes and references. Please follow
the journal's Author Guidelines [4].

In diesem
interdisziplinären Online-Workshop des BMBF-geförderten Projekts „Meme,
Ideen, Strategien rechtsextremistischer Internetkommunikation" (MISRIK)
philosophischen Autor*innen, Themen, Probleme, Konzepte, Disziplinen
Szene untersuchen.

Dear all,
We are happy to invite you to the first APSE (Applied Philosophy of
Science and Epistemology) lecture of the semester, with a talk by
Gurminder K. Bhambra (University of Sussex).
Title: Critical Theory and the Need for a Political Economy of
Colonialism
When/Where: Thursday, 14th of November, 3-5 pm, ONLINE!
You can join the event via the following Zoom link:
https://univienna.zoom.us/j/69090163424?pwd=Y2JCxwmd7L88U1OPOLw7OCrGuuxZIe.1
Abstract:
Frankfurt School critical theory is grounded in a theory of capitalist
modernity which, in common with wider sociological approaches, elides
histories of colonialism. This results in a misdiagnosis of current
problems of inequality and inadequate solutions for their address. Many
critical theorists, for example, focus primarily on issues of
redistribution associated with a capital-labour relation organised
nationally and now seen to be threatened by globalisation and migration.
Such an understanding fails to account for how the decommodification of
labour through the development of national welfare arrangements in the
West – an explicit issue for critical theory from Habermas's
"Legitimation Crisis" onward – has been bound to wider colonial
histories and, specifically, colonial patrimonies. A proper address of
these issues requires a more expansive approach to distributive justice
conducted in a reparative frame that recognizes the ways in which the
legacies of our shared, but asymmetrically experienced, colonial pasts
continue to configure the present and its possibilities. It involves
making colonial histories central to understandings of capitalist
modernity and to the normative address of inequalities that otherwise
risk being legitimated by the standard accounts of critical theory. In
this talk, I take issue with the central conceptualisation of modern
society as capitalist at its core, and the way in which capitalism is
understood separately from colonialism. I further question the implicit
nationalism of critical theory and argue that what is missing from it is
a political economy of colonialism.
Please feel free to share this invitation with anyone who might be
interested.
All details can also to be found here:

Best wishes,
Irene Salzmann (on behalf of the APSE unit)

(1) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Bamberg und Bayreuth, Deadline: 15.11.2024)
Short-Term Position (up to one year, 0.65 FTE, 13 TV-L) in Theoretical
Political Science and Philosophy
*Short-term position* (up to one year, 0.65 FTE, 13 TV-L) in Theoretical
Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Bamberg and the
University of Bayreuth.
The position will be affiliated with the Chair of Theoretical Political
Science (Prof. Dr. Johannes Marx) at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität
Bamberg or the Chair of Philosophy I (Prof. Dr. Olivier Roy) at the
University of Bayreuth as part of the research project "Simulating
Collective Agency "(SColA), funded by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft.
Description:
The SColA project studies mechanisms underlying the emergence and
stability of collective agency. It first investigates the role of shared
beliefs and intentions for the emergence and stability of collective
agents, and second, it studies how these shared attitudes contribute to
the stability, growth, or decline of autonomy in such groups. The
project will do so through a computational and game-theoretical study of
so-called' team reasoning' (Bacharach, 2006), an extension of classical
non-cooperative game theory in which the players can reason either
individually or as a team member.
Candidate profile:
* Initiative and aptitude for teamwork.
* Background in Philosophy or Political Science, interested in
theoretical questions and computational
approaches.
* Familiarity with decision, game theory, and practical philosophy in
the analytic tradition.
* Basic experience with programming.
The position is relatively flexible and can be adapted to the successful
candidate's timeline and experience, e.g. by turning it to a 1.0 FTE for
a shorter period. Its main purpose is to conduct scientific research
related to the SColA project. It could, however, also be used to prepare
a funding application for a follow-up position. The SColA project
finishes on November 30th, 2025, and the position cannot be extended
beyond that date. Remote work is possible.

(4) CALL FOR PAPERS (Bochum, Deadline: 24.11.2024)
RTG 'Situated Cognition' Spring School (SCSS) 2025: Situated Cognition
in Human Minds, Animal Minds and AI Systems
_Abstract_
This spring school of situated cognition brings together a diverse range
of researchers working on mind and cognition, and how they relate to the
body and environment. We strive to provide an extensive overview of
state-of-the-art theorizing, experimenting, observing, and surveying of
all kinds of situated phenomena in humans, non-human animals, and AI
systems. The relevance and impact of these advancements is then also
reflected upon for the scientific domain and beyond. We are therefore
delighted to have a lineup of excellent keynotes coming from diverse
backgrounds and with different interests ranging from, but are not
limited to, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, animal research,
sociology, and artificial systems. Doctoral students and early postdocs
from Europe or abroad are cordially invited to apply for a talk or
poster presentation. We aim to provide an open and collaborative
environment to foster intensive discussion, networking, and exchange
with leading experts as well as fellow students of this continuously
growing area of research.
_Call for Talks and Posters_
We invite applications from PhD students and early post-doctoral
researchers (PhD in 2020 or later) for presentation slots in our program
or poster presentations. All PhD participants will have the opportunity
for a discussion of their individual PhD projects with a group of
selected PIs.
Accepted presenters who do not have their own institutional funding will
receive support of up to 250 Euros for those based in Europe and 350
Euro for non-EU applicants (within a post-event reimbursement procedure
based on submitted expenses; we can only recover costs for travelling
and accommodation).
_Submission Extended Deadline_
Applicants are asked to submit an abstract of their work (maximum 500
words) until November 24th, 2024, on our SciencesCONF application

whether you would like to give a talk or only present a poster.
Applications which are not accepted as talks will also be evaluated for
possible poster presentations. Also note that the author information
will be requested via the application platform to contact you after the
anonymous review process. Therefore, the abstract and any file uploaded
should be anonymized with all identifying information removed to allow
for a blind review. You can also submit work that is the result of
collaborations. However, we will only accept one submission for one
person. The funding can also only be given to one speaker per talk.

== Topic:
In 1960, physicist and Nobel Laureate Eugene Wigner wrote an article
entitled "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural
Sciences." Wigner was surprised that the mathematical structure of a
physical theory not only accurately describes the physical world but
also leads to new predictions and further advances. This phenomenon
puzzled him, leading to the term "unreasonable effectiveness": Why is
mathematics so effective in describing the natural world? More recently,
a Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for work that many might consider
to belong to computer science. The first image of a black hole, for
example, relied heavily on sophisticated code. Formal tools are now
integral to many complex measurements, cutting across various scientific
practices.
We are organizing a two-day exploratory workshop. The main theme will
broadly explore the applicability of mathematics both within and outside
its traditional boundaries. Day 1 will focus on the use of mathematical
tools in the sciences, particularly in the life sciences. The life
sciences are increasingly becoming more mathematical, and there are
ongoing fruitful discussions-both scientific and philosophical-on how
mathematics should be coordinated with biological and medical phenomena.
Day 2 will shift to internal mathematical considerations, such as how
formal tools, like theorem-proving software, can be applied to these
interdisciplinary efforts. Moreover, "applicability" has become a major
theme in mathematical research, as some analytical resources prove to be
more suitable for different contexts within pure mathematics. This is a
topic that has recently garnered the attention of philosophers of
mathematics, especially those interested in the "practice turn" in
philosophy.
Finally, a common thread throughout both days of the workshop is the
ethical dimension. The way we mathematize and quantify the real world,
and how automation influences various fields, has wide-reaching
implications for society and numerous professional practices.

Moral rights occupy a central place in contemporary moral theorizing. At
the same time, a promising hypothesis in the theory of normativity is
that normative phenomena (including moral phenomena) can be explained in
terms of reasons, i.e., in terms of the factors that count in favour of
actions or attitudes. The aim of this workshop is to investigate and
discuss the relation between moral rights and normative reasons.
The workshop will focus on (but is not limited to) questions such as the
following:
What are the connections between moral rights, moral duties, and moral
reasons?
Can rights be analysed in terms of reasons or should rights be
regarded as reason-providing?
What (if anything) do reasons-based analyses of rights imply for the
justification of moral rights and for first-order moral theory?
What can our best accounts of moral rights contribute to our
understanding of normative reasons?
Participation is free, but registration is required and places are
limited.
Registration deadline: 8 January 2025.
