Die ausgeschriebene Stelle ist in einem Teilprojekt der DFG Forschungsgruppe 5022 „Medizin und die Zeitstruktur guten Lebens" (Sprecher: Prof. Dr. Mark Schweda, Oldenburg) angesiedelt. Die einzustellende Person trägt zur ethischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Zeitstruktur guten Lebens im Kontext der Altersmedizin bei. Im Mittelpunkt des Teilprojektes steht die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen alter(n)sbezogenen Formen der Gesundheitsversorgung (Allgemeinmedizin, Geriatrie, Pflege) und Vorstellungen guten, gelingenden Alter(n)s in intergenerationellen Zusammenhängen. Dabei werden theoretisch-philosophisch ausgerichtete Überlegungen zum guten Alter(n) durch eine ethische Analyse sozialwissenschaftlicher und medienkulturwissenschaftlicher Forschungsergebnisse angereichert. Auf diese Weise sollen individualistische Verständnisse von Glück, Sinn und Wohlergehen durch eine empirisch informierte ethische Betrachtung ergänzt werden, die die Bedeutung von Generativität für ein gutes Altern im Kontext von Medizin und Gesundheitsversorgung berücksichtigt. Das diesjährige Kolloquium legt dabei einen Schwerpunkt auf Fragen rund um das Thema Vielfalt. Work in this field sheds light on sexist (and other) biases in the area of logic. This is a very broad conception but it captures the diversity of the area of Feminist Logic. More specifically, Feminist Logic can mean... * ... to use logical tools for feminist ends, e.g., to uncover biases in arguments or to model social hierarchies to make patriarchal structures explicit, * ... to look at the history of logic from a feminist perspective, e.g., by revealing so far disregarded contributions by female logicians and exposing exclusionary practices that led to their invisibility, * ... to consider teaching practices in logic and how those disadvantage certain underrepresented groups, * ... to devise, revise and/or argue for logical systems from a distinctly feminist perspective, e.g., certain logical systems may seem better or worse suited for formalizing feminist arguments. This conference, held in the 100th year of his death, is continuing a series of scientific meetings dedicated to the work of Frege and its connections to modern science. This year, the conference will focus on five key areas: - A comparison of Frege's logic concept with historical and modern approaches, - Frege's contributions to foundation of mathematics and modern developments - Frege's linguistic analyses and modern analytic philosophy, - Frege's polemics and the culture of scientific debates, - The ongoing influence of Frege's work in modern science. Die gesellschaftliche Produktion ist kapitalistisch organisiert ebenso wie die Weise, wie in unserer Gesellschaft Waren verteilt werden. Betrifft uns Kapitalismus aber nicht auf eine viel grundlegendere Art? Bedingt er, wie wir als Individuen denken, fühlen, handeln und begehren? Formt er die Beziehungen, in denen wir mit anderen und unserer Umwelt stehen? Diese Fragen sollen im Rahmen der Tagung unter dem Schlagwort der spätkapitalistischen Subjektivierung in den Blick genommen werden. Diskutiert werden sie mithilfe der methodischen und begrifflichen Mittel der Kritischen Theorie und in einem interdisziplinären Austausch zwischen Philosophie, Soziologie und Psychologie. Zudem werden sie nicht abstrakt, sondern konkret thematisiert - einerseits anhand der Phänomene kapitalistischer Prägung von persönlichen Beziehungen und Arbeitsformen und andererseits mit Blick auf den wiedererstarkten Autoritarismus sowie unseren Umgang mit der Klimakrise. Graduate Workshop "Explaining Explaining" 2025 University of Vienna, Austria September 1-3, 2025 We are pleased to announce the Graduate Workshop on "Explaining Explaining" to be held in Vienna from September 1-3, 2025. The workshop is organized under the auspices of, and funded by, the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP). THEME Explanations recur as a constant and central theme in philosophy: philosophers contend that in mathematics, proofs are favoured for their explanatory values; in the sciences, theories are selected according to explanatory virtues they exhibit; in metaphysics, explanatory relations direct our accounts of concepts and ontological priority; in philosophy more broadly, we offer and compare explanations for facets of reality in order to resolve conceptual problems. Date: 10/04/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: Much philosophical attention has recently been paid to Conceptual Engineering - or, the intentional modification of concepts by philosophers in order to achieve epistemic, ethical, or political ends. The most controversial aspect of conceptual engineering are its aims, but there is also much debate over the mechanism by which the process could even be carried out. In this project, I will propose a mechanism derived from the work of Friedrich Waismann by which intentional conceptual amelioration can - and does - occur. I will then argue that this account of conceptual engineering solves a number of standing problems in the literature, but in doing so, places some key checks on the ambition of conceptual engineering as a project.

APSE talk by Remco Heesen + reading group

The talk will be given by Remco Heesen (LSE). When: Thursday, 10.04.2025, 15:00 - 17:00 Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien) The Division of Cognitive Labour under Poisson Productivity When a community of academics faces a research problem and multiple methodological approaches to solving it, how much effort should they devote to each approach to maximise their chances of solving the problem and minimise the time to a solution? This problem is known as the division of cognitive labour (DCL). More specifically, Philip Kitcher, Michael Strevens, and Kevin Zollman have asked whether and to what extent academics’ expectations of credit for solving the problem can act as an invisible hand to produce an efficient DCL without a need for top-down planning. Here I revisit this question using a modelling framework (key ingredient: academic productivity follows a Poisson distribution) that has more empirical support than Kitcher’s, Strevens’, and Zollman’s, and is also more flexible in that it can be used to address broader questions about credit incentives. The somewhat surprising finding is that in this framework the DCL problem becomes essentially trivial. I’d like to discuss implications for how we think about the model and/or the DCL problem. KiC Information session for all PhD students on teaching at the Department

Dear VDP Researchers, the Director of Studies Philosophy (Studienprogrammleitung Philosophy) publishes a call for applications for "external" teaching in the department of Philosophy every year. The current SPL Michael Staudigl has informed about the respective procedures and opportunities for predocs / PhD students in one of our Pragmatic Academic events in January, this year. In the context of the current call for applications for the year 2025/26 Paulina Sliwa and Max Kölbel asked us to invite you to an information meeting about external teaching that is organised by the Cluster of Excellence Knowledge in Crisis. The meeting is open to all PhD students in the department and will take place on Tuesday 8 April from 14:00-15:00 in Room 3A, NiG. (see information below) In order to make it possible for everyone to attend, the VDP Writing Afternoon will start at 3pm instead of 2 pm on this day. +++ KiC Information session for all PhD students on teaching at the Department +++ Paulina Sliwa and Max Kölbel will host an information session on the opportunities for doctoral students to take on paid teaching within the bachelor programmes of the philosophy department. (Third-party-funded PhD students are asked to submit their requests by April 10th, while others can apply by April 20th.) The aim of the session is to provide participants with information about the application and selection process and to answer their questions during the session. This session will take place on Tuesday 8 April from 14:00-15:00 in Room 3A, NiG. We encourage all PhD students considering teaching opportunities to attend!
