Subject: Invitation to the interdisciplinary conference "Unimaginable Silence"
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to the interdisciplinary conference "Unimaginable Silence" that will take place at Uni Vienna on November 6th and 7th, in Room 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna).
Across the disciplines of aesthetics, phenomenology, history and psychology, the conference explores the manifold ways in which silence, representation and expression interact to address the singularity of traumatic experiences in which meaning struggles to take hold. Central questions include: What can an image do in the face of the unimaginable? How can it account for the singularity of an event that escapes conscious expression? What does discursive silence reveal about such events, and can spaces of silence create occasions for critical engagement with the unresolved past?
The program for the two days is as follows:
// 6. November · Friday
- 10:00–12:00 Guided Tour at the Jewish Museum Vienna (please register, see below)
- 13:00 Official Start of the Conference

Liebe Kolleg*innen des Instituts für Philosophie,
wir möchten Sie herzlich zur uniMind-Lecture

gen-ki-narrative-jenseits-vom-hype> Existenzielle Risiken & Nebenwirkungen:
KI-Narrative jenseits vom Hype mit Eugenia Stamboliev und Christo Buschek
einladen.

Dear all,
We send you a warm invitation to the following online lecture ("Thinking
Nature"):
28.10.2026, 6:30pm (CET): N. Katherine Hayles - "Analog Lifeworlds: How
Organisms Evolved Analog Computing and Then Humans Reinvented It"
(online), part of the event series "Thinking Nature" that has been
taking place at the Department of Philosophy since 2025 (more
information here [1]).
Zoom-Link:
https://univienna.zoom.us/j/62003446384?pwd=JVXK84VKSmpijMFWPF4kHCUEgSXPvu.1
[2]
Abstract: Digital computation is now so dominant that many forget the
tradition of analog computing, which in the 1930s and 1940s was the
preferred computing method for those who needed fast real-time results.
This is especially unfortunate because the entire biosphere operates
primarily on analog computation. The scientific discipline that explores
the analog computational processes in living organisms is natural
computing (sometimes also understood as including bio-inspired
computing). This rapidly emerging field has an impressive array of
research results that show the myriad subtle, complex, and multi-layered
analog computational processes that organisms to cognize, communicate,
anticipate and learn--in short, to survive and flourish. Because the
area of the humanities interested in computation is called "Digital
Humanities", a sister branch called "Analog Humanities" should be
launched. It can explore the important connections between biological
and technological computing, as well as connect with the research
results of natural computing to understand its implications for
humanistic inquiry. This talk will offer a definition of computing,
explain how analog computing differs from digital computing, assess its
distinctive benefits and limitations, and discuss hybrid digital/analog
technologies, such as Large Language Models (LLMs).
Katherine Hayles is the Distinguished Research Professor at the
University of California, Los Angeles, and the James B. Duke Professor
Emerita from Duke University. Her twelve print books include _Postprint:
Books and Becoming Computational_ (2021), _Unthought: The Power of the
Cognitive Nonconscious_ (2017), _How We Think: Digital Media and
Contemporary Technogenesis_ (2015), _How We Became Posthuman: Virtual
Bodies in Literature, Cybernetics and Informatics_ (1999). Her latest
2025 book is _Bacteria to AI: Human Futures with our Nonhuman
Symbionts._

Dear all,
our next speaker in the Philosophy of Science Colloquium organized by
the Institute Vienna Circle is Alexander Murphy (IVC Fellow; Corvinus
University, Budapest), who will give a talk on October 29th from
4.45-6.15 pm.
All are welcome!
________________________________________________________________________________
PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE COLLOQUIUM TALK:
Alexander Murphy (IVC Fellow; Corvinus University, Budapest):
"A Humanistic Approach to the Two Images"
Date: 29/10/2026
Time: 16:45-18:15
Venue: Lecture Hall 2 [1], TP (Tiefparterre/lower ground floor),
Staircase 5, Court 3, Main Building, Universitätsring 1, 1010 Vienna
Abstract:
Sometimes our scientific advances demonstrate that our ordinary ways of
speaking about the world are wrong. Sometimes, however, they show
exactly how our ordinary descriptions get things right.
In this paper, I give a framework for working out which of the two cases
we are in. I suggest we think about how science can reveal the open
texture in our ordinary language, in Friedrich Waismann's sense. When it
does so, we should respond by thinking about what we want our ordinary
talk to do for us. This will guide us in how to "close" our ordinary
concepts which will, in turn, help us shape the relationship between our
scientific and ordinary pictures of reality. As a case study, I'll
examine the exchange between Arthur Eddington and Susan Stebbing
regarding the significance of the Rutherford-Bohr model of the atom for
our ordinary solidity judgements.
The major consequence of this proposal is that it requires us to reflect
on ourselves and our lives as well as the world. To determine whether
our ordinary talk is proven wrong by science we must think about what we
want to do with our everyday speech. This requires taking a leaf out of
Bernard Williams' book. Namely, it requires doing philosophy as a
humanistic discipline.

Verwirklichung einer moralischen Welt darstellen. Es schließt mit einer
neuen Interpretation von Kants Begriff des höchsten Gutes.

Jessica's book provides a systematic interpretation of Immanuel Kant’s
practical metaphysics, building up to his controversial claim that there
are rational grounds to affirm the existence of the immortal soul and
God because they represent metaphysical conditions for the realization
of a moral world. Her book finally offers a new interpretation of Kant's
conception of the highest good.

The workshop “Creativity and Ontology” will be held on 23–24 October in
the Erika-Weinzierl-Saal.
Workshop description:
The workshop explores how creativity across various domains (e.g.,
thinking, art, science, etc.) raises ontological questions or even
suggests specific ontologies. On one hand, contemporary cognitive
sciences have made efforts to demonstrate that creativity—despite its
apparent opposition to algorithmic, process-driven thinking—can be
reconciled with traditional metaphysical realism and the correspondence
theory of truth. On the other hand, the phenomenon of creativity has
been a significant factor in challenging the notion of an a priori,
pre-determined world structure—a paradigm often referred to as
"classical ontology" and commonly traced back to Ancient Greek
philosophy, such as Plato’s theory of Ideas.
A number of influential thinkers have pointed to the need for a new
ontology that accounts for creativity, including Thomas Kuhn, Friedrich
Nietzsche, Nelson Goodman, Martin Heidegger, Henri Bergson, and Gilles
Deleuze, to name just a few. This workshop provides a platform to
discuss the role of creativity in various philosophical and scientific
domains and to examine whether the ontologies assumed in these fields
require revision in light of creativity—or whether they already offer a
sufficient framework to accommodate it. It also challenges the widely
held contemporary assumption that classical, "ancient" ontologies are
inherently opposed to the creativity-driven demands of modern critiques
of metaphysical realism.

Best wishes,
Erik Kuravsky
