Dear all, You are cordially invited to the following visiting speaker talk: Fr, 26 June 2026, 11–12:30 Venue: Lecture Hall 'HS 42', Main Building, Second Floor (Stiege 7) Liz Camp (Rutgers): Framing for Perspective: Tools for Making Meaning Abstract: The world bombards us with information; in order to act, we must make sense of it. Philosophers typically construe such engagement as one of forming and assessing hypotheses or plans. But much of our epistemic and practical engagement with the world is more intuitive: we explore hunches and inclinations without being able to articulate exactly what these consist in. Getting to the point of even forming a hypothesis or disagreeing with an interlocutor requires deploying and refining a perspective: a complex disposition to selectively attend to, integrate, and respond to information, in virtue of a background of values and statistical assumptions. In order to explore and share perspectives, we often turn to frames: expressive devices like mantras, metaphors, and stories that encapsulate regulative principles for intuitive interpretation. Drawing on an analogy to perception, I identify three ways that the structure of perspectives differs from that of canonical propositional thought and talk, and illustrate the power of frames to guide rational inquiry and communication.

Die Werkstatt Phänomenologie bietet als Teil der Phänomenologischen Forschungen des Instituts für Philosophie der Universität Wien ein niedrig-schwelliges Forum, in dem frühe Forschungen, Texte, Gedanken und Ideen besprochen werden können. Einmal pro Semester veranstaltet die Werkstatt Phänomenologie zudem einen Runden Tisch zu einem Thema aus dem Bereich der Phänomenologie. Als Organisator:innen möchten wir Sie demgemäß herzlich zum Runden Tisch zur Natürlichen Einstellung einladen. Im Rahmen drei kurzer Beiträge wollen wir mit allen Interessierten über das generelle Konzept, die Aktualität, die Politische Tragweite und weitere Aspekte der Natürlichen Einstellung diskutieren. For those of you who don't know: Trans*Formations is an event series organized by students of the University of Vienna which showcases recent strands in trans* theorizing and philosophizing. On June 7th, 2026, we will host an all-day event under the title _Gender Euphoria?!_. All are welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: **Pedro Del Valle-Inclan (IVC Fellow, Scuola Normale Superiore Pisa)* Carnap's Problem: Rules, Models, and Meaning Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. * Date:* 28/05/2026 * Time:* 16h45 * Venue:* New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3C * Abstract:* In his /Formalization of Logic /(1943) Carnap pointed out that there are non-normal interpretations of classical logic: non-standard interpretations of the connectives and quantifiers that are consistent with the classical consequence relation of a language. Different ways around the problem have been proposed. In a recent paper, Bonnay and Westerst˚ahl argue that the key to a solution is imposing restrictions on the type of interpretation we take into account. More precisely, they claim that if we restrict attention to interpretations that are (a) compositional, (b) non-trivial and (c) in the case of the quantifiers, invariant under permutations of the domain, Carnap’s Problem is avoided. This paper has two goals. The first is to show that Bonnay and Westerst˚ahl’s solution to Carnap’s Problem doesn’t work. The second is to argue that something similar to their proposal seems to do the job. The problems with Bonnay and Westerst˚ahl’s approach trace back to issues concerning the (un)definability of subsets of the domain of first-order structures, as well as to the compositionality of first-order languages. After expanding on these problems, I’ll propose a way to modify Bonnay and Westerst˚ahl’s account and solve Carnap’s Problem.
