DEBUNKING THE ARGUMENT FROM SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 20/03/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: Strategic science skeptics criticize scientific claims solely to promote non-epistemic (for instance, political and economic) goals. Strategic science skeptics present arguments to support their criticisms of scientific claims. In this paper, I will analyze and debunk a neglected argument exploited by strategic science skeptics: the argument from scientific revolutions (aka the "Galileo gambit"). According to this skeptical argument, strategic science skeptics liken themselves to key figures in scientific revolutions throughout the history of science - in particular, to Galileo Galilei - in order to enhance the credibility of their own claims. In this talk, I will argue that the argument from scientific revolutions is not sound, because at least one of its premises (stating that skeptics are, like Galileo Galilei, revolutionary scientists) is false.

DEUTSCHE GESELLSCHAFT FÜR PHILOSOPHIE E.V. INFORMATIONEN DER DGPHIL 10. KALENDERWOCHE 2025 DER NEUE VORSTAND DER DEUTSCHEN GESELLSCHAFT FÜR PHILOSOPHIE STELLT SICH VOR Am 28. Februar 2025 wurde der neue Vorstand der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Philosophie gewählt. Als erste Frau in der Geschichte des Verbandes übernehme ich dieses Amt. Ich trete es mit der Überzeugung an, dass Deutschlands reiche philosophische Tradition das europäische Denken tiefgreifend geprägt hat und auch von diesem nachhaltig geprägt ist. Von Hildegard von Bingen bis Albertus Magnus, von Elisabeth von Böhmen bis zu Leibniz, von Kant über Hegel, Marx bis zu Edith Stein, Edmund Husserl und Hannah Arendt sind diese Namen feste Bestandteile des europäischen und globalen Ideentransfers. Eingebettet in ihre europäische Tradition entstanden philosophische Bewegungen, deren Ideen und Werte weit darüber hinaus in die globale Welt wirkten. Heute stehen die philosophischen Ideen auf dem Prüfstand, in einer Dynamik, die zugleich neue Perspektiven und Möglichkeiten des Weiterdenkens eröffnet. Die Amtsübernahme geschieht in herausfordernden Zeiten. Die gegenwärtig zu beobachtenden Entwicklungen deuten auf eine Abkehr von einer Periode liberaler Politik hin, die gekennzeichnet war durch die Auflösung von Grenzen und die Überwindung intellektueller Barrieren, einschließlich kontinentaler und ethnischer Grenzen. Wir werden uns aus dem politischen Tagesgeschäft heraushalten, aber wir werden unsere philosophischen Traditionen Europas verteidigen und das mit äußerster Klarheit artikulieren. Zum ersten Mal umfasst der Vorstand fünf Positionen. Zum Vizepräsidenten wurde Gerald Hartung, Professor für Philosophie an der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal gewählt. Dr.in Ingrid Becker, Postdoktorandin an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und Habilitandin an der Universität Sankt Gallen, übernimmt das Ressort Wissenschaftskommunikation/IT. Das Ressort Schule wird künftig von Dr. Kevin Dear organisiert. Das Ressort Finanzen wird weiterhin von PD Dr. Christian Barth geführt. Ph.D. in Philosophy at the Slovak Academy of Sciences

Dear doctoral researchers, There is an open call for PhD students at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. As far as I am aware, the basic scholarship should be for 4 year, 800 euros per month, netto, no taxation. But you should ask this directly to them. If there are some projects, it can be, of course, more. PhD students have a lot of freedom in Slovakia, so in case 800 euros is not enough, they often take some part time jobs, as teachers, translators, or in some philosophy related institutions... Usually it works very well. It is not that much, but you a minimum for Bratislava or Košice. If arrangements are satisfactory, it could be in principle possible to pursue a co-tutelle at the University of Vienna. There is an office at the University that deals with these matters. APSE Talk Series - Natalie Ashton - 27.3. - Creating a Strong Foundation for Neurodiverse Epistemology

Dear all, we are delighted to invite you all to the next installment of the APSE talks series organized by the Applied Philosophy of Science and Epistemology Unit at the Department of Philosophy, and to the accompanying reading cycle. The lecture will be given by Natalie Alana Ashton, University of Sterling. When: Thursday, 27.3.2025, 15:00 - 17:00 Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien) Creating a Strong Foundation for Neurodiverse Epistemology Autistic people have had unprecedented success building effective epistemic communities online. A detailed analysis of the conditions and practices which produced and sustain these communities would be illuminating for both the epistemology of social media and the emerging area of neurodiverse epistemology. However, epistemology has only recently begun to theorise about marginalised groups, and many of its foundational principles are ill-suited to this work. In this talk I'll outline a planned project to develop a novel approach to neurodiverse epistemology, which challenges some of the fundamental assumptions of the early, exploratory literature, and lays the groundwork for a participatory methodology which can do real justice to neurodiverse communities. Speaker Bio: Natalie Alana Ashton works on the political and social aspects of epistemology, and is interested in how oppression and power effect political deliberation in the online sphere. In the past she has focused on theoretical issues (exploring how to integrate feminist standpoint theory and hinge epistemology, whether these views should be understood as relativist, and what that means). Her current work is on the practical applications of such views: what they tell us about social media legislation, platform design, and online communities. As usual, at 13:00 on the day of the talk, there will be a possibility to discuss some core readings of the talk with the APSE reading group. The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two nights of the symposium. Emigration und Exil österreichischer Wissenschaft” <https://lit-verlag.de/isbn/978-3-643-66198-2/> Friedrich Stadler (Hg.) als open access Publikation präsentiert. <https://lit-verlag.de/isbn/978-3-643-51187-4/>Sehr lange wurden sie mit ihrer Geschichte vergessen: Dr. Josef Sabath, Dr. Ernst Schidlof und Prof. Oskar Kreisky, Kurt Goldhagen, Emil Maurer und Walter Bondy, Irma Königsberg, Gertrud Raubitschek und Dr. Hedwig Mautner und viele andere: Tausende jüdische SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen wurden 1938 unter der NS-Gewaltherrschaft von ihren Schulen vertrieben. Diese Arbeit dokumentiert die Vertreibungshandlungen an Wiener Gymnasien 1938 und erfasst die Vertriebenen und die Ermordeten namentlich. Die unterschiedlichen Phasen des Erinnerns und Vergessens der Vertreibungsgeschichte in der eigenen Schulöffentlichkeit nach 1945 werden dargestellt. Mit der Analyse der Jahresberichte wird die Auseinandersetzung mit Schulgeschichte, konkret der Umgang mit Erinnerung an die Vertreibungsschicksale am eigenen Schulstandort, thematisiert und reflektiert. *Renate Mercsanits* unterrichtete am Wasagymnasium und an der Radetzkyschule Religion, Englisch und Geschichte und führte dort Gedenkprojekte durch. Reminder - Writing Afternoons - On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective - Trans*formations Series (Hybrid)

Dear PhD researchers, Let me kindly remind you that there are two events today at our department organized by your peers. 1. VDP Writing Afternoons Summer Semester 2025 The VDP Writing Afternoon provides an opportunity for focused work on dissertations and academic texts. They are accessible to philosophy PhD candidates, BA and MA students, or anyone in between. Every Tuesday, 14:00-18:00, in Room 3A, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna, it's writing o'clock. No registration necessary, just show up. On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective - Trans*formations Series The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective, evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and the current paradigm for trans* healthcare. Bio: Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective.
