(2) CALL FOR PAPERS (Passau, Deadline: 07.04.2025)
Panel "Politische Ästhetik zwischen Entdeckung und Konstruktion"
_Politische Ästhetik zwischen Entdeckung und Konstruktion_ (Panel auf
der XII. Tagung für Praktische Philosophie am 25.-26. September 2025 in
Passau)
_Organisatorinnen:_ Katharina Naumann (Magdeburg/Berlin) & Larissa
Wallner (Frankfurt/Berlin)
'elite capture'.
Welche
politischen Funktionen übernimmt Kunst in der Zivilgesellschaft (Triki)?
Anonymisierte Abstracts (max. 500 Wörter) für einen Vortrag von 20
Minuten werden bis zum _7. April 2025_ erbeten an:
larissa.wallner(a)gmx.de und katharina.naumann(a)ovgu.de. Über eine Annahme
des Vorschlags in das Panel werden wir zeitnah informieren. Das Panel
wird dann als Ganzes bei der Tagung für Praktische Philosophie
eingereicht.

(3) CALL FOR PAPERS (Dortmund, Deadline: 31.05.2025)
2nd Dortmund Conference on Philosophy and Society with Kate Vredenburgh
(LSE)
_October 1-2, 2025_
The Department of Philosophy and Political Science at TU Dortmund
University and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial
Intelligence are delighted to announce the 2nd Dortmund Conference on
Philosophy and Society, taking place on October 1-2, 2025, in Dortmund,
Germany. The event will feature Kate Vredenburgh [2] from the London
School of Economics, who works in the philosophy of social science,
political philosophy, and the philosophy of technology, and who was
recently awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for a project on the
future of work. The first day of the conference will be reserved for up
to six presentations from speakers selected via this call for papers.
Kate Vredenburgh will be present to respond to the papers. She will also
give a public evening lecture. On the second day, we will hold a student
workshop on Vredenburgh's work.
_Conference Themes_
The conference will engage with themes from Vredenburgh's work, in
particular philosophical perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI)
and on the future of work. Concerning AI, Vredenburgh investigates the
moral implications of the use of opaque AI systems in the institutions
of our society, arguing for a right to explanation. She has developed an
ethically informed picture of algorithmic bias, and proposed an account
of how we should respond to such bias from the perspective of justice
and fairness. She is also an advocate of a right to explanation in the
context of AI, based on explanation's relevance in protecting the
possibility of informed self-advocacy. Regarding the future of work,
Vredenburgh's research focuses on the impact of AI on the workplace. She
draws on egalitarian theories of justice and argues that AI should be
deployed so as to enable more equality at work, and she maintains that
opaque AI contributes to working conditions which undermine workers'
autonomy while alienating them from their work.
_Call for Contributions_
We invite scholars to submit papers for the first day of the conference.
We welcome contributions on the topics sketched above, including, but
not limited to:
* Explainable AI - perspectives from ethics, political philosophy,
epistemology, and philosophy of science
* The right to explanation
* Algorithmic bias and algorithmic fairness
* The impact of AI on institutions
* The impact of AI on the future work
Contributions engaging with Vredenburgh's are especially welcome, but we
will also consider work on these topics more broadly.
_Submission Guidelines_
* Abstracts should be no more than 500 words, prepared for blind review.
* Submissions should be sent as PDF attachments to Paul Klur
[paul.klur(a)tu-dortmund.de]. Please use the subject line "CfP
Vredenburgh".
* The _deadline_ for submissions is _May 31, 2025_.
* Limited funding may be available to cover travel and accommodation
expenses for speakers who cannot otherwise finance these costs.

(4) CALL FOR PAPERS (Special Issue, Deadline: 31.07.2025)
Topoi: Linguistic Derogation and Its Prevention
Paper submissions are invited for the special issue/collection of Topoi
entitled: The Darkside of Language: Linguistic Derogation and Its
Prevention. The special issue aims to bring together researchers on
different areas of derogatory and manipulative language who also discuss
the practical implications of their research when it comes to preventing
both linguistic derogation/manipulation and its negative effects.
Special issue article publications often bring higher citations and
visibility than regular papers and attract more relevant readership due
to its scope. Topoi is indexed in the Web of Science under AHCI,
currently in Quartile 1 and placed in the top-10 ranked
Philosophy-Category journals, with a 2023 IF of 1,3 and CiteScore of
3,1.

* Stefan Rinner, University of Duisburg-Essen, Email:

DESCRIPTION
Language can be used in highly destructive ways. One such way is the
usage of pejorative language. These are individual expressions, such as
slurs, or larger linguistic constructions, such as hate speech, that are
used to derogate an individual or group because of a certain group
identity (e.g. based on race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual
orientation, or the like) or because of personal characteristics, such
as appearance. As a consequence, derogatory language primarily has two
functions. First, it can be used to offend or psychologically harm.
Second, it can be used to create or reinforce negative attitudes towards
the derogated individual or group. For example, most uses of derogatory
language for Jewish people in Nazi propaganda had mainly the purpose to
create and reinforce anti-Semitic attitudes that would lead to
increasing discrimination and violence against Jewish people, to their
expulsion or incarceration in concentration camps, and, ultimately, to
genocide.
In the philosophy of language, the question then arises how linguistic
derogation is accomplished. A satisfactory answer to this question
should explain both the offensiveness of derogatory language and the
fact that it can be used to create and reinforce negative attitudes.
Since a comprehensive understanding of language requires an
understanding of how language is used to derogate, providing such an
explanation is generally seen as a touchstone for the quality and
correctness of theories from the philosophy of language. Moreover, a
better understanding of how linguistic derogation is accomplished is not
only of theoretical interest, but also of practical and ethical
relevance. If we can understand how linguistic derogation works, then we
can also understand how to prevent or at least contain the negative
consequences of its use, and whether such attempts at containment are
compatible with, for example, the right to free speech.
The discussion of linguistic derogation is often scattered throughout
different areas of inquiry, such as slurs, hate speech, or misgendering.
Furthermore, the question of how a better understanding of linguistic
derogation can help us to prevent or at least contain the negative
consequences of its use is often neglected. The ambition of this
collection is to close both gaps by bringing together researchers on
different areas of derogatory language who also discuss the practical
implications of their research. In addition, the issue will discuss
phenomena in the vicinity of linguistic derogation, such as linguistic
manipulation (e.g., the use of dogwhistles).
Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
* The semantics and pragmatics of derogatory language (including
misgendering)
* Derogatory language and free speech
* Counterspeech and other ways of blocking the negative effects of
derogatory language
* Linguistic manipulation and its prevention (e.g. dogwhistles, coded
language, fake news)

(6) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (München, 28.07.-01.08.2025, Application
Deadline: 31.03.2025)
MCMP Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical Philosophy
(LMU Munich)
The Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) is organizing the
second edition of the _"Summer School for Widening Participation in
Mathematical Philosophy"_, which will take place from 28th July to 1st
August 2025 in Munich, Germany.
The summer school continues a successful tradition, which began in 2014
with eight editions of the summer school on mathematical philosophy for
female students and was expanded in 2024 to underrepresented groups.
The 2025 "Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical
Philosophy" is open to women and members of other groups that are
under-represented in mathematical philosophy. These groups include
under-represented gender identities, races and ethnicities, people with
disabilities, people from low income and non-academic family
backgrounds. The target level is master students and last year-bachelor
students.
The school's aim is to encourage students to engage with mathematical
and scientific approaches to philosophical problems, and thereby help to
redress the under-representation of women and other marginalized groups
in mathematical philosophy. It offers the opportunity for study in an
informal and interdisciplinary setting, for lively debate, and for the
development of a network of students and professors interested in the
application of formal methods to philosophy.
The 2025 edition of the summer school will feature:
* A lecture series by Francesca Boccuni [5] (University Vita-Salute San
Raffaele) on _Frege and New Logicism_;
* A lecture series by Hilary Greaves [6] (Oxford) on _Introduction to
Formal Epistemology and Formal Ethics_;
* An evening lecture by Alyssa Ney [7] (LMU);
* Talks on mathematical philosophy by members of the MCMP;
* Talks and discussion concerning diversity and the profession;
* Poster presentations by the Summer School's participants;
* As well as social events and opportunities to explore Munich.
The organizing committee consists of Nicola Bonatti, Cordelia Berz, John
Dougherty, Levin Hornischer, Alessandra Marra, Toby C.P. Solomon.
[How to Apply:]
We welcome applications from women and members of other
under-represented groups (including under-represented gender identities,
races and ethnicities, people with disabilities, people from low income
and non-academic family backgrounds) who want to specialize in
mathematical philosophy. The school's target level is master students
and last year-bachelor students.
_When: _28 July - 1 August, 2025;
_Where: _in-person, in Munich, Germany;
_Application Deadline: _March 31, 2025;

The first talk in this semester will be by Michael Rieppel
(Syracuse University) [2]: "In Search of Essentially Predicative
Entities“ this Monday 10.03.2025.
Abstract: According to a Fregean view recently revived in
higher-order metaphysics, predicates do not denote objects, construed as
any kind of thing a name could denote, but must denote things of a
fundamentally different logical type. A common route to that conclusion
is via Russell's Paradox, but this doesn't do much to illuminate what it
is about names and predicates that prevents them from both denoting
kinds of objects. This paper critically examines more linguistically
oriented arguments that attempt to establish the negative Fregean
conclusion by reflection on the nature of predication, or how names and
predicates combine to form truth-apt sentences in the first place. I
begin with two such arguments but conclude that, properly situated in a
general syntactic and semantic framework, they remain unconvincing. I
then reconstruct a third argument, inspired by Wittgenstein's picture
theory of meaning, showing that something in a sentence must indeed have
a semantic function other than that of denoting an object. However, the
Fregean victory remains constrained, in that we have little reason to
think English predicates must be what play that non-denoting role,
especially if predicate position is to be open to quantification.

Interdisciplinary graduate conference
We are announcing a PhD symposium on Future Thinking on May 8th 2025 -
May 10th 2025, in the University of Vienna.
The 1st day of the conference will focus on theory, covering empirical
and philosophical research on cognition and its interpretations. The 2nd
day will focus on various political, social and epistemic issues
considered through the lens of empirical research. On the 3rd day, the
conference will be centered around future directions of research in
cognitive science, and its broader implications, based on the work
presented during the first two days.
The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual
Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two
nights of the symposium. The participants of the conference will also be
invited to attend the lecture and the proceeding reception.
Throughout the conference, we will cover the following topics:
• Conceptual change
• Predictive Processing
• Anticipation and Perception
• Uncertainty and Reasoning
• Activism in Science
• Epistemic Trust
• Addressing Climate Change
• The Erosion of Democracy
We welcome submissions from PhD students as well as postdoctoral
researchers at early stages of their career. Contributions need not be
limited to empirical research and can address the aforementioned issues
from broadly philosophical and political perspectives. However, we
expect applicants from other disciplines to have a background or strong
interest in cognitive science.
Applications can be submitted here: https://forms.gle/qUa6iuYaQQwCMRsd6.
Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words, and must be prepared for
anonymous review. The deadline for submission is 10.03.2025. We will
notify applicants of our decision by 11.04.2025.

(7) CALL FOR PAPERS (Special Issue, Deadline for Mentoring Scheme
Application: 15.04.2025)
KRITERION - Journal of Philosophy: Wittgensteinian Philosophy and the
Formal Sciences
We are pleased to announce our plans to host a mentoring scheme leading
to a Special Issue (SI) with Kriterion. Initial discussions with the
Editor-in-Chiefs have taken place, and final confirmation will follow
the commencement of the mentoring scheme, including comments by Prof.
Sorin Bangu (Bergen).
= Special Issue Focus
The SI will focus on Ludwig Wittgenstein's influential yet underexplored
work in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. While we invite
submissions on classical themes, we are particularly interested in
exploring intersections between Wittgenstein's ideas and fields such as
the philosophy of mathematical practice, ethnomathematics, and
artificial intelligence.
Ludwig Wittgenstein remains one of the most impactful philosophers of
the 20th century. His contributions to logic and mathematics, however,
are often overshadowed by his other works. This Special Issue aims to
highlight Wittgenstein's perspectives on language, logic, and
mathematics, emphasizing their relevance to modern philosophical
questions concerning the formal sciences.
Submissions may address topics from Wittgenstein's early works, such as
the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, his later writings like the
Philosophical Investigations, or his contributions to the philosophy of
mathematics. Our goal is to enrich discussions of Wittgenstein's
insights and explore their contemporary applications.
= Mentoring and Submission Guidelines
==Target Audience:
=== Junior Researchers (pre-PhD): Mentorship and coaching will be
provided by Jordi, José, and Deniz to assist participants in developing
their submissions.
=== Early-Career Researchers (PhD awarded, max. 3 years post-defense):
Direct submissions to the Special Issue without mentorship by José,
Jordi or Deniz are allowed, but you need to apply to be part of the
cohort (so that we manage space accordingly). You can get feedback from
us if you prefer.
=== Others are invited to submit but Junior and early-Career Researchers
get prioritized.
== Feedback Process:
=== All junior participants will get feedback by José, Jordi and Deniz
or by an expert they choose.
=== All early-career participants can get this feedback
=== All articles will undergo a double-blind peer-review process as per
Kriterion's standards. For articles that are not selected, we will
strive to help authors find suitable publication outlets.
=== All accepted articles will receive expert commentary/reply from
Prof. Dr. Sorin Bangu, who will publish a final commenting article in
the special issue.
== Publication Goals:
=== We aim to publish five articles in the Special Issue.
= Open Access and Fees
KRITERION has open access fees for accepted articles. We are actively
seeking funding solutions and waivers to support participants. If you
have a budget to cover open access fees, please let us know. There will
be a solution, so very very likely no article will be declined because
of fees! This also worked in the last Special Issue some of us edited
there.
= Application Process
To apply for the mentoring scheme, please submit the following by email
to us three (jperez(a)fsof.uned.es; Deniz.Sarikaya(a)vub.be;
jordi.fairhurst(a)uib.es) with the subject "Application: Special Issue on
Wittgensteinian Philosophy and the Formal Sciences":
~500-word description of your proposed paper
~300-word motivation statement
Applicants from traditionally marginalized groups are especially
encouraged to apply. If you identify as part of such a group, you may
indicate this in your motivation statement or through a separate email.
= Timeline
- Application Deadline for Mentoring Scheme: By April 15, 2025
- We aim to communicate the results by the end of April.
- First Draft Submission: End of 2025
- Review Rounds and Revisions: Completed by Q4 2026
= Supporting Community
This Special Issue is supported by the Young Network for Wittgensteinian
Philosophy, a global community of students, scholars, and young
philosophers dedicated to Wittgensteinian studies.
For more on the network see here:
https://sites.google.com/view/young-network-wp/home . We host an annual
in person workshop and a monthly colloquium.
We look forward to your participation and contributions to this exciting
project.
Best wishes,
Jordi Fairhurst (Universitat de les Illes Balears)
José Antonio Pérez-Escobar (UNED, Madrid) and
Deniz Sarikaya (Vrije Universiteit Brussels & Universität zu Lübeck)

(9) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Dortmund, 12-13.06.2025)
Dortmund Disputes on Economic Justice
Date: June 12 and 13, 2025.
Place: TU Dortmund University, Dortmund, Germany
Keynotes: Miranda Fleischer (San Diego), Nicholas Vrousalis (Rotterdam)
Organizers: Peter Königs, Christian Neuhäuser, Lea Prix, Dick Timmer (TU
Dortmund University)
Most fundamental questions of economic justice remain unresolved. There
is little agreement on the place of markets, the nature of property, the
justifiability of taxes, the importance of workplace democracy, the
injustice of economic inequality, and, generally, the merits of
capitalism and socialism.
While debates on economic justice often take place within specific
political camps, where many assumptions are shared, the Dortmund
Disputes take a different approach. The idea of the Dortmund Disputes is
to foster debate across political boundaries. It seeks to bring together
open-minded scholars with diverse political outlooks--whether liberal
egalitarian, libertarian, socialist, conservative, or otherwise--who are
committed to our shared goal of advancing our understanding of economic
justice.
The keynote speakers for the first installment of the Dortmund Disputes
are Miranda Fleischer and Nicholas Vrousalis. Miranda Fleischer is
Richard and Kaye Woltman Professor in Finance at University of San
Diego's School of Law. Her work focuses on ethical and legal issues
surrounding taxation, wealth and wealth transfer, and charitable giving.
She's the co-author of a recent book on Universal Basic Income. Nicholas
Vrousalis is Associate Professor in Practical Philosophy at Erasmus
University Rotterdam [9]. His work revolves around distributive ethics,
democratic theory, and the history of political philosophy, with
emphasis on Kant, Hegel, and Marx. He is the author of a recent book on
capitalism and exploitation.

(10) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Hamburg, 21-25.07.2025)
Hamburg/Vienna Summer School on "The Logic of Reasons" with Hannes
Leitgeb
We are delighted to announce that the 2025 Hamburg/Vienna Summer School
will be taught by Hannes Leitgeb (LMU Munich). This year's topic will be
*The Logic of Reasons*. The event will take place July 21-25 at the
University of Hamburg.
Description: In this course we will deal with the logic of reasons, that
is, general structural constraints on the reason-for relationship, where
the emphasis will be on the logic of epistemic reasons, that is, reasons
for belief. We will review some of the existing literature on this topic
(Horty, Spohn, Nair, ...) and then turn to a new approach to the logic
of epistemic reasons in which reasons correspond to vectors that act on
a subject's subjective probabilities.

Registration is required and open until April 30th. For details, visit
