Call for the IVC Research Fellowship, Summer term 2026/27

Call for IVC Research-Fellowships, Summer Term 2026/27 Application open from September 15 - October 31, 2026 4 IVC Research-Fellowships from March 1, 2027 to August 31, 2027 The Institute Vienna Circle (IVC) offers fellowships for junior visitors (PhD students and postdocs) as well as senior visitors who wish to do research at the Institute. The maximum length of a fellowship is six months. Normally a fellowship pays €1800 gross income per month (approx. €1500 net income). Successful applicants will normally not reside in Vienna already. The application procedure is as follows: (1) Applicants send the following documents to office.wienerkreis(a)univie.ac.at <> -- by the deadline of October 31, 2026: a. CV with list of publications b. Exposé of the research to be undertaken during the fellowship (1-2 pages) c. certificates of academic degrees (2) Applicants arrange that two letters of recommendation are sent to office.wienerkreis(a)univie.ac.at <>, by October 31, 2026. (3) The heads of the IVC consider the applicants together with current members of the IVC. (4) The heads of the IVC, together with the Dean, decide on the basis of the application papers and the consultation. (5) Applicants are informed about the success or failure of their application. PhD Position, FWF Project “Politics of Truth”, Vienna, Deadline: 7 October 2026

The Institute of Culture Studies (IKW) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), Austria’s largest non-university institution for basic research, is offering a position as Praedoc (F/M/X) (20 hours per week, 50 %) for a period of 36 months, starting 1 January 2027 (no later than 1 March) The position is part of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) project “Politics of Truth (POLTRUTH): Rethinking Truth in a ‘Post-Truth’ World” led by PD Dr Gerald Posselt. Against the backdrop of the global rise of authoritarian populism and the ubiquity of lies and fake news in the public sphere, the project investigates the complex relationship between truth and politics from both historical and systematic perspectives. It is based on the premise that social crises and conflicts affect not only the political sphere but also a society’s regime of truth, thereby calling into question previously self-evident norms, practices, and institutions. The project aims to develop a political theory of truth that accounts for our contemporary condition, thus also shedding new light on historical events and phenomena such as the American Revolution, the French Revolution, Marxism, and fascism. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue their own PhD project, which ideally falls in the thematic scope of POLTRUTH. They will assist the PI in examining the various historical phenomena in terms of their specific politics of truth and their significance for the crisis of the current truth regime. Call for Applications: PhD in Philosophy at the University of Vienna (30h/week, 4 years) The FWF-funded research project “Bodies of Knowledge: Use-Based Expertise Beyond Biomedicine” – PI: Sophie Juliane Veigl – invites applications for a fully funded PhD Position. Expected Start Date: Dec 2026 (with some flexibility) About: Waning trust in science is often framed as a crisis of expertise. Yet many communities beyond institutionalized medicine produce sophisticated forms of knowledge through their engagement with biomedical technologies. But are these knowers experts? And can current philosophical understandings of expertise account for these forms of knowledge? Bodies of Knowledge investigates how expertise is produced and negotiated in communities that engage with steroid hormones beyond conventional healthcare settings. Through a participatory research design, the project integrates qualitative social science methods with philosophical analysis. Current case studies examine steroid hormone use by bodybuilders (PI-led) and DIY gender-affirming care (Postdoc-led). The PhD Project: The successful applicant will develop an original doctoral project within the broader research agenda of Bodies of Knowledge. Applicants are invited to propose an empirical case study of a community that uses steroid hormones. The proposed project may build on one of the existing empirical contexts or investigate another community. Applications should outline a case study the applicant would be excited to pursue, explain its relevance for the project, and outline how the applicant envisions approaching it empirically and philosophically.
